Dear Member,
One of the most distinctive aspects of public media is its focus on the arts – we bring you right to the stage of world-class theatre, music, and dance. On Friday nights this month, you’ll have front-row seats to the very best Broadway has to offer, including An American in Paris The Musical and Rodgers & Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music, as well as documentaries about the making of John Leguizamo’s Tony-nominated play Latin History for Morons and the artistry of Tony-winning director/producer Harold Prince. And if you miss one, don’t forget that you can watch all of these Great Performances specials on wttw.com.
Also on WTTW11 and wttw.com/watch this month, explore the animal kingdom with a variety of new nature programs. Follow three young classical musicians who learn there is strength in numbers in Hear Us, and join us for an array of other new music specials. Also, the teams from Chicago Tonight and PBS NewsHour offer in-depth coverage of the midterm elections; Ann Curry returns with more poignant reunions on We’ll Meet Again, and NOVA takes us inside this summer’s miraculous Thai Cave Rescue. On wttw.com, discover Chicago’s Native American community and trace their history and legacy as Native America premieres. And learn more about a vanishing language and efforts to save it in a story about Kartemquin Films’ Keep Talking.
On WFMT, wfmt.com/listen, and the WFMT app, join us for two more San Francisco Opera productions for November Saturday afternoons, plus two blockbuster Rossini works: Semiramide from OperaDelaware, and William Tell from Opera Southwest. We’ll have special music to commemorate Thanksgiving – also tune in on the holiday for listener dedications – and earlier in the month, to honor the centenary of the Armistice that ended World War I. And to learn more about the history of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, we’ll hear from longtime CSO music director Frederick Stock. Each week, check out the WFMT Facebook page for live video where you can hear and see performances in action.
During this month of Thanksgiving, we are so thankful for your continuing support.
Sincerely,
Sandra Cordova MicekPresident & CEO

WTTW partners with the award-winning POV documentary series to present two free screening events in connection with the film Tribal Justice.
This new documentary, a co-production of Vision Maker Media and American Documentary/POV and produced by Anne Makepeace, follows two Native American judges, Abby Abinanti (chief judge of the Yurok Tribal Court and the first Native American woman admitted to the State Bar of California) and Claudette White, chief judges in two of the more than 300 tribal courts across the country. The film reveals how they are reaching back to traditional concepts of justice in order to reduce incarceration rates, foster greater safety for their communities, and create a more positive future for their youth. By addressing the root causes of crime, they are modeling restorative systems that are working, and mainstream courts across the country are beginning to incorporate indigenous customs and beliefs into their justice systems. As Abinanti says, “We are village people. We have village values. And those values compel us to take care of each other, our families, and our country.”
The November 27 event will also include a discussion. For more information, please visit wttw.com/events.

Free Screening and Discussion: Keep TalkingWTTW, in partnership with the Department of Cultural Affairs

The film follows four Alaska Native women fighting to save Kodiak Alutiiq, an endangered language now spoken by less than 40 remaining flu-ent Native Elders. Their small community travels to remote Afognak Island to start teaching kids Alutiiq. At the camp, Sadie, a trou-bled teen, is inspired to begin learning the language and dances of her ancestors. Over the next five years, the women overcome historical and personal traumas to find joy and hope in the revitalization of their cultural heritage.

2-for-1 Tickets for Red Clay Dance World Premiere
Red Clay Dance Company (RCDC) opens its 10th anniversary season with the world premiere of EKILI MUNDA|What Lies Within, choreo-graphed by Vershawn Sanders-Ward, founder and artistic director of RCDC, and Jonas Byaruhanga, founder and director of Keiga Dance Company in Kampala, Uganda. This evening-length work seeks to unearth the cultural history and knowledge around identity that is archived in the body and the unapologetic liberation of this knowl-edge. EKILI MUNDA|What Lies Within positions the body as a physical, spiritual, and social archive of cultural history that subconsciously informs personal identity.
Performances take place Thursday through Saturday, November 8-10 at 7:30 pm at the Dance Center, 1306 S. Michigan Avenue in Chicago. WTTW members may purchase two tickets for the price of one, subject to availability, for any performance by calling (312) 369-8330 and using the code 28958. $10 Off Tickets to Refuge Theatre Project’s The Last SessionA “hilarious and heartbreaking” Off-Broadway sensation and cult hit, The Last Session gathers
singers and an offstage engineer in a recording studio to record a new pop/gospel album with an old friend, faded popstar Gideon. But the mix is dramatically altered by the unexpected arrival by a Bible-thumping, homophobic gospel singer. All of them are deeply connected to Gideon, yet are unaware that he carries a big secret: that he plans to end his struggle with AIDS after the session. Harmony is restored through friend-ship and the power of music.
WTTW members will receive a $10 discount per ticket (four-ticket limit), subject to avail-ability, for any performance through December 2 by visiting RefugeTheatre.com and using code WTTW when purchasing tickets. Performances take place at Atlas Arts Media at 4809 N. Ravenswood in Chicago. This offer is not applicable on previously purchased tickets or with other discounts or offers. Honoring the Armistice CentenaryAt the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, in 1918, the nations that had been fighting for four blood-soaked years signed an Armistice to end World War One. The 100th anniversary of this document is being observed this year. On WFMT we’ll have music at various times over the Veterans Day weekend (November 10-12) that was written during or right around the war years, or that makes reference to wars and lesser conflicts in other ways. A specific memorial program will be featured on With Heart and Voice. Bill McGlaughlin will also devote a week of Exploring Music to the theme Music in Time of War. Nicholas Phan, founder and director of the Collaborative Arts Institute of Chicago and a noted operatic and concert tenor, will perform songs of the World War One era on Live from WFMT. And we’ll also hear Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem – which, although it commemorates events of World War II, uses poetry written by Wilfred Owen in response to World War One.

OperaDelaware: SemiramideOperaDelaware was founded in 1945 in Wilmington, making its home in that city’s Grand Opera House, which dates from 1871. Last year the company celebrated the 225th anniversary of the birth of Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868) with performances of La Cenerentola, the Petite Messe Solennelle, and the melodramatic Semiramide, set in ancient Babylon. The youthful cast was headed by Lindsay Ohse as Queen Semiramide and Aleksandra Romano as Arsace, with Rossini specialist Anthony Barrese conducting.

Milwaukee Symphony Onstage on ThanksgivingFormer Milwaukee Symphony music director Andreas Delfs returned not long ago to lead a concert that opened with three favorite excerpts from Mendelssohn’s Midsummer Night’s Dream music. MSO concertmaster Frank Almond then gave the Midwest premiere of the new violin concerto by American composer Pierre Jalbert, a faculty member at Rice University. The concerto was a co-commission from the MSO, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. Delfs ended the concert with A Sea Symphony by Ralph Vaughan Williams for soloists, chorus, and orchestra. First performed in 1910, the work is set to poetry from Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass.

Relevant Tones: On the GuitarGuitarist Nels Cline is a jazz artist who has also played in a wide variety of pop, country, and rock bands, notably Wilco, for which he’s been the guitar player since 2004. He’s also a classical composer. He’ll be a guest of Relevant Tones host Seth Boustead, with whom he’ll discuss his compositional style, and the difficulties – or opportunities – of making the transition from jazz to classical. They’ll also talk about the dangers of trying to classify music. A varied artist with a unique perspective, and a lot of music for Seth to sample as well.
