Principal’s Message November 2016
Dear Parent/Guardians, September and October have gone very quickly and it has been a great start to the school year.
Over the past few weeks all of the grade 1-6 classrooms have been working with Engaging Fusion Artists who come into the classrooms and work with the students and teachers to incorporate art into the curriculum. This is a wonderful and exciting program as it enriches the learning for all.
As a safety procedure we have always done 10 practice fire drills during the school year. The process has changed and now we are required to do one fire drill each month. This means we will be doing fire drills during the winter months. We will try to ensure we do these at times when the weather is most cooperative.
This month you will be receiving your child(ren)’s first report card of the school year and will have time to meet with the teachers to discuss their progress and learning plan during our Tri-Conferences (Parent/Child/Teacher) on November 17th in the evening or during the day on November 18th. It is important that you attend the conferences and share in your child’s educational process.
On Wednesday November 9th we will have an early lunch dismissal in order to schedule the Tri–Conferences. Students will be dismissed at 11:30 am and they are to return to school for 12:55 entry. Students in the lunch program will be supervised over this period.
Our Remembrance Day Service will take place on Thursday, November 10th at 10:30 am. Please join us in the Gym. We will be accepting donations for poppies on Thursday. All money collected will be given to the local legion. The school will be closed on Remem-brance Day, November 11th.
As the weather is getting colder please ensure your children are dressed for the weather as all children go outside for recess twice each day. Also we ask that you do not send children to school earlier than 8:40 am or 12:40 pm as it is too cold for them to be outside for long periods of time and there is no supervision until these times.
For the safety of all the children please do not park in the no parking zones in front of the school and near the crosswalk. Please go further down the block and park when you are picking up or dropping off students. Our School Patrols are out there to help our students cross safely and when you stop or park in this zone this puts all of the children at risk.
Our next Parent Advisory Meeting is on November 16th at 9:00 am. We look forward to seeing you in the school, at our assemblies, Remembrance Day Service and the Tri-Conferences.
Sincerely,
Lucy Schnaider Wendy Verbong
Principal Vice Principal
The Learning Lens An In-Depth Look into Classroom Learning
Room 103 Mrs. Wood Room 103 has some exciting news… We have a PET FROG!!! Meet BB (Big Betty) she is an African Albino Clawed Frog. Over the last month we have been busy preparing for BB’s arrival. We interviewed BB’s past owner to learn about what we needed to do in order to take care of her. After that we had to clean and decorate the tank as well as fill it up with water. We learned a lot about the needs of living things as we got ready to welcome BB to our classroom. We’ve also been able to learn about different types of writing along the way like thank you cards, interviews, lists and how to’s. We can’t wait to observe BB in her new home and learn more about her. Come by Room 103 and visit BB anytime!
In October we had a presenter from Prairie Exotics visit our classroom with over 10 different reptiles and amphibians! We even got to hold and touch a few reptiles. We learned that you can use your sense of touch and sight to make thoughtful observations about living things. We have so many new wonderings now and can’t wait to continue our learning journey. Coming up in Room 103 we have a presenter from The Humane Society visiting us on November 7th at 1:05pm for an hour. They will be sharing their wisdom with us about the importance of taking care of living things.
The Learning Lens An In-Depth Look into Classroom Learning Room 105 Ms. Candace Shepit The students of Room 105 have had a very busy beginning to the new school year. We have 21 students in our class, and many of them are new students to John M. King. I would like to welcome all of the new families to our classroom. Over the past 2 months we have been learning about the Seven Teachings of the First Nations. We are looking at the values represented in the Seven Teachings (Love, Courage, Truth, Respect, Humility, Wisdom and Honesty) and how we can apply those teachings to our life. We have spent a lot of time reading and writing about our learning. In math we have been learning how to add to subtract by finding the difference and making compatible pairs from 10-100 using counting collections and other math tools. We had our first Engaging Fusion artist come into the classroom and we have started to learn about pixilation. Some of the students were involved in creating a short piece where they disappeared into the coat closet and all that was left was a pile of clothing. We had so much fun and can’t wait to create our classroom piece. Thanks for taking the time to read this.
Sports Report Phys. Ed. Mr. Jamieson As the weather outside starts to cool down things are just beginning to heat up in our Phys. Ed. Classes. We have completed our Fundamental Movement Skills Assessment and now have fo-cused targets to work towards for improving the many skills we practice while playing games in the gym. Recently our focus has been on transport skills (moving our bodies) while running, jumping, hopping, skipping and galloping. We have been learning about the importance of warming up our bodies before being physical through lots of exciting tag games and evasions games. We have also been focusing on the importance of fair play in the gym and how to solve problems that arise in appropriate ways. Please remember that the changing weather requires all of us to Come Prepared for Phys. Ed class wearing our running shoes. Rubber boots, crocs, sandals and moccasins are dangerous in the gym and children need proper foot wear to participate in class safely. Please help your child remember to bring their running shoes to school every day. Keep fit and have fun! Mr. Jamieson
Camp Manitou This year the Grade 5/6 students attended Camp Manitou. Camp Manitou
is an outdoor camp located just west of the city of Winnipeg. It is run by
the Winnipeg Jets True North organization. We were fortunate to attend
with the help of their campership program that kept costs affordable for
our families. We went on two different days. Students had a great
learning day! Some of the activities we did included fishing, zip-lining,
fire building, bannock making, mountain biking, field games and archery.
Many of our students were participating in these activities for the very first time! Great job
JMK students! Mr. Warkentin
Music
Youd better not shriek, youd better not groan, Youd better not howl, youd better not moan. Great Pumpkin is coming to town! We have had Halloween fun in the music room these last few weeks, singing
pumpkin carols and other spooky songs with dance and movement. I’m excited to
see the children’s costumes and hear about their Halloween adventures. I haven’t
decided yet what I’ll be dressed up as this year. I guess the kids will have to wait
and see. On a more serious note, we are also beginning preparations for our
Remembrance Day Ceremony. The choir has been preparing two songs, both with
a strong Canadian connection. One is “Hymn to Freedom” by the jazz pianist
Oscar Peterson. The lyrics are very powerful, and one line in particular stands out
for me: “When everyone joins in our song, and together singing harmony, that’s
when we’ll be free.” The other song is written by a friend of mine from BC,
Rosemary Bell. She has set the famous poem, “In Flanders Fields” to music. Like
last year, the entire student body of John M King will be singing a song together to
conclude the ceremony. This year we will be singing, “If I Had a Hammer” to end
our ceremony with a message of hope. with Justice, Freedom and Love, we will
move toward a world of peace.
Congratulations In October these children won the T.L.C Draw:

This past September 30th our
school participated in the Terry
Fox Run. Terry's marathon of
Hope happened 35 years ago
when he decided to raise money
for Cancer Research.
As a school we ran around the
city block between Ellice and
Sargent. Thank you to all the
students who brought in a silver
collection to help raise funds!
Thank you to all the staff for
helping make the Terry Fox Run
a success at John M. King School! Some of our students even went around the block
more than once! It did not matter whether we walked
or ran, it was important for us to create awareness by
being outside as a school community to show our
support. Way to go !
