Daly, S.J., Summer Scholarships For Cultural Immersion Experience in Korea June 25 - July 21, 2018 About the Scholarship The Center for Asian Business is pleased to offer summer scholarships for a cultural immersion program in South Korea. Recipients will learn conversaonal Korean and gain an understanding of Korean culture. Sogang University, our sister Jesuit university in Seoul, coordinates the program. The scholarships are named in honor of the late John P. Daly, S.J., former Director of the Center for Asian Business, LMU. He worked in Korea as a young Jesuit from 1961 to 1981 to help develop Sogang University, where he served as president for 12 years. Sogang faculty and alumni have contributed to an endowment to make the scholarships possible. Fr. Daly’s lifelong goal has always been to promote a deep- er understanding and appreciaon of culture and history between Asia, Korea in parcular and America. In this age of globalizaon, the need for such understanding of history and culture and of the effects of cultural differences on our daily lives has never been greater. These scholarships will provide an opportunity for students to learn Korean language and to experience its culture and thus help them become leaders in academia, business, and polics. John P. Sogang University

Language Courses Students take language courses designed to help improve

their fluency in conversational Korean. Using an integrat-

ed teaching method, students practice speaking, listening,

reading, and writing skills, and learn useful vocabulary

and grammar patterns. Through group projects and class-

room activities, students acquire practical speaking expe-

rience while learning about Korean culture.

Cultural Activities Students spend the afternoons taking interactive culture

classes. In addition, students take outings into the city to

complete assignments that help them practice their

Korean language skills in a real world settings. Destina-

tions include historical sites and other local points of

interest. Students will also participate in culture-related

group projects with Korean college students.

Field Trips Students will take several half-day field trips to visit

attractions in the Seoul Metropolitan Area, including

Samchung-dong, Insadong, sporting events, and

performances. In addition, students will take a two-day

trip to historic sites outside of Seoul.

Application Process All full-time LMU students who have a cumulative GPA of

3.00 or above are eligible to apply for the scholarships.

Applicants will be required to demonstrate these qualifi-

cations and submit a qualifying essay.

Successful applicants will receive round trip coach airfare

(maximum reimbursement $1200). The Sogang Korean

Immersion program, in-country accommodations and

travel arrangements are included in the scholarship. Stu-

dents will need insurance and money for some meals.

Sogang University will supervise the program in Korea.

In their applications, students will write an essay (500

words) explaining why they wish to participate in the pro-

gram and what they will be looking to learn. Students

should submit their essay, resume, and unofficial tran-

scripts to the Center of Asian Business. Scholarships will

be awarded on the basis of the student’s qualifications,

including the essay, GPA, and an interview by the Selec-

tion Committee.

Scholarship recipients will be expected to spend four

weeks in Korea, and on return will submit a report on

their cross-cultural experiences. Specific details about

these reports will be given to the scholarship students.

Recipients will also be asked to help promote the scholar-

ship program in the future.
