Dear Parent and Friends of the John Therry School community,

I cannot begin to thank parents for their amazing support of the school and its staff over the past weeks.

Your patience with interuptions to school days and beautiful gestures of encouragement have been greatly

appreciated.

The year began with two tragedies. Mr Tony Graham, a very dear and long serving member of staff losing

his courageous fight with cancer and the sudden and terrible accident where Michael Hannon lost his life

on Anthony Drive. Before the end of this term there were three very sad events with Falmata Wako Liban

taking his own life, Fr Tony Daly of Ruse parish dying so quickly from cancer within two weeks of diagnosis

and finally the tragic accident where Melissa Bond, Year 9 Coordinator was killed on Appin Road.

Our staff and students have suffered greatly and have been very sad. There has been wonderfdul support

and prayers from far and wide. We feel truly blessed to be part of this school, the Diocese of Wollongong,

the Marist family and the Campbelltown community.

There is ongoing counselling and pastoral support available for staff and students. Please contact the

school if you feel your child needs to be given additional support.

The events of this term have been enormous and as we come to the end of the Term I ask you to keep the

John Therry community, parents, staff and students in your prayers.

Dear Parents,

As we come to the end of a very busy and challenging term, we thought it would be important to touch

base and outline some of our expectations and priorities for term 2 to ensure we get off to a good start

with all students. A reminder that students return to school on Wednesday 27th April.

Student wellbeing: We have a range of systems in place at school to monitor student behaviour and

wellbeing and address concerns as they arise. As parents, please feel free to contact the school if you

have any concerns for your child that you think the school needs to know about. The front office will be

able to direct your call where it needs to go if you are not sure who to contact so don’t hesitate to get in

touch with us.

Attendance and punctuality: For students to achieve their potential, they need to be at school for every

possible lesson. While most students will be sick at some stage throughout the year, missing more than

a few days of school can have an impact on student learning. Missing one fundamental skill or concept

can snowball and impact on the future understanding of related content and material. Please continue

to make school attendance a priority for your child.

A reminder that if students have 30 absences in a 100-day period schools are obliged to seek advice

from Family and Community Services (formerly DOCS). Regulations indicate that failure to address

student non-attendance can see families fined in excess of $10,000 and we clearly want to avoid this

situation.

Uniform: Ensuring all students are in correct school uniform serves a number of purposes and will

continue to be a priority. One significant benefit of the uniform is that it is a great leveller and equity

tool that takes away ‘fashion’, the need to keep up with the latest trends in hair and make-up and the

pressure to look or dress a certain way. We have a strict uniform policy so that we able to focus on each

child and their learning and minimise these other issues for students. Students return to school in term

2 in full winter uniform. Details can be found in the school diary on requirements here and Lowes

should have all stock available at this stage.

A reminder that hair needs to meet the school guidelines after returning from holidays and

inappropriate haircuts may see the students withdrawn from school until this is rectified. Any new

piercings will also need to be removed if they do not meet the school uniform policy and students need

to consider this before having them done in this short holiday break. Clear piercings are also not allowed

and students will be required to remove them. School Photo Day is being held on Monday 2nd May

(Week 2) and we expect that all students will be in full winter uniform for this day.

We thank you greatly for your assistance in ensuring we get these simple matters right. This flows

through to other areas of school life and supports all students feeling a sense of belonging and

connection to our school community. We thank you for your ongoing support and your understanding in

what has been an unusually difficult term for the school.

MISA.

MISA finals are upon us and JT has three teams competing for MISA Premierships. As you can see above JT placed rather well in all competitions and will earn valuable Championship points for the school.

Congratulations to the Open Boys Oz Tag team that went through their season undefeated. Full of individual brilliance, the team comes together every week putting their skill and teamwork on display. Great job lads.

The 8/9 Boys Basketball team had to play a Round 6 match against Broughton, which they won before heading into the Grand Final against Mt Carmel. The boys must have fatigued but were able to pull out a victory by 3 points to remain undefeated throughout the season. A great job to Mr Peters and the boys for all their hard work in training and playing throughout the season.

Unlucky to the 10-12 Girls Oz Tag team who only suffered two losses the whole season to the champs. Good effort ladies.

Well done to all students for their contributions throughout the season. Your efforts have bolstered John Therry’s position in the overall Champion School MISA competition.

Sport Selections for Term 2 are now due and students are to complete the Google Form before the end of Term 1 as to ensure there preferred sport selection is accepted in time.

Week 1 of Term 2 is a Staff Development day, and Week 2 MISA starts against St. Patrick’s College. Boy’s teams will have Week 2 to trial and train while Girls Netball and Softball need to trial in Week 1 back at school. These rushed conditions require student cooperation. Please ensure daily notices get read and emails are checked.

These shorts, as seen below, can be worn for MISA games, Diocesan competitions and other State/Knockout competitions. These shorts are only to be worn for representative activities. These soccer and rugby league shorts will match the latest jerseys the school has purchased for the students.

They are not replacing the schools current sports shorts and are not to be worn to school for normal sport or pdhpe lessons.

An unexpected lead up to this years carnival with the funeral of Melissa Bond. Over 300 past and present staff and students attended the service in Wollongong. Upon arrival at the Athletics Complex, student numbers were looking a bit slim, but after a late roll up, there were students everywhere, engaging in the one minute silence for Ms Bond, the house cheers and the first event of the day, the 400m. Attendance once again proved to be vital for house points, Conolly and Ryan leading the way with 66%, closely followed by Chisholm 64% and Murray with 63%. As always, participation and winning events was the secret ingredient. Records are made to be broken. Last year Britney Moon broke 6 records. This year, Britney would break 5.

Ryan House was a dominant force, demonstrating superiority across all age groups winning the most participation points across all events with 862 points, followed by Murray 789, Chisholm 756 and Conolly 675. Cheering throughout the day was loud and proud, showing great house and JT PRIDE. Murray took the prize over Ryan, Conolly and Chisholm. But Ryan and Chisholm got bonus points for going out of there way to ensure the stadium was left spotless by filling extra rubbish bags. Over the course of the day Chisholm and Ryan were dominant throughout the running events, while Murray won most of the throwing events. But no one was going to stop Chisholm from winning the most events, 27 to Ryan’s 26, Murray’s 19 and Conolly’s 15.



The last event of the day was the 16 x 60m House relay. The fastest male and females from each age group plus 4 select teachers raced for final points. It was on for young and old, as each house gave their all. Fairly even to begin with over the first few laps, but then Ryan House kicked into another gear and ended up winning by almost 50m. A dominant display by Ryan, who have now won the event 3 years in a row. The highlight of the day goes to Malek Malual who had the southern end of the oval mesmerised as he challenged the 2013 record of 1.71m in the 15 Boys High Jump. Although Malek does not posses the technique his rival competitors have, he has natural hops. He bounds towards the bar and then glides up and over the bar in slight ball position before falling to the mat. Malek had the audience in awe as he broke the record, raised it by 2cm then challenged 1.76m but failed. His peers surrounded him, showering him with praise over his awesome achievement. Finals points are still in calculation, as Javelin for all age groups needs to be completed at school in Term 2. Age Champions will be announced soon after, but final House points will be revealed at the Year 12 Final Assembly at the conclusion of Term 3. Once again, congratulations to all students on an awesome day. New records were set, mates challenged mates, fun was had and John Therry will be well represented at the Diocesan Carnival in Term 3.
