PROJECT PROFILE

LPA, INC.

The Exploration Center at Johnson Middle School promotes collaboration between math, science and arts disciplines, blurring the lines between courses and creating opportunities for project-based learning. Designed to be highly flexible, the center offers unique, personalized learning. Labs can be reconfigured to support small, medium and large groups and integrate technologies as shared resources.

The goal of the campus master plan is for each building to be “learning machine” that puts student engagement on display. The configuration of the buildings forms a quad at the heart of the campus. This protected space is designed to stimulate discovery and trigger spontaneous learning. Transparent connections to the outdoors, featuring playful architectural landscape elements, inspire learning and creativity. Exploration continues outdoors, with sandblasted text in the concrete illustrating units of length and interactive chimes promoting auditory development.
