PFAS PROBLEMATIC
Fluorinated Compounds (PFAS) are mostly:
Persistent in the environment
Non biodegradable chemical compound
➔ Clean-up the soil
➔ Destroy fluorinated foam concentrate
Bio accumulative in the living beings
Present in the human blood during several years
Toxic for animals and humans
Immediate and long-term effect in the organism (carcinogenic, reprotoxic…)
4
2010-2015: Stewardship Program EPA/USA– fluorosurfactant manufacturers work for eliminating PFOA
2017: On demand of ECHA, European regulation EU 2017/1000, eliminate PFOA from firefighting foam
from 2020
➔ Project of PFAS regulation from ECHA in 2020 : fluorine free firefighting foam becomes recommended
In Sweden, the Swedish Chemicals Agency (KEMI) obliges companies to provide information
concerning PFASs starting from February 2020
Australia: PFAS are banned in Queensland and South Australia
USA: PFAS are banned in 12 U.S. states
Regulatory measures

PFAS regulation in EU
1970
• PFOS recognized as toxic
2011
• PFOS banned
2020
• PFOA (C8) banned

International reaction
Germany: WFVD research for FFF solution
North America:
• NFPA- study delegated to Fire Protection Research Foundation (FPRF)
• MILSPEC :
• Phase-out of military’s use of PFAS-based firefighting foam (AFFF)
beginning in 2024
• Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) search for PFAS-free firefighting foam
• Canadian airports : CAN/ULC new standard to come
LASTFIRE is investigating on FFF performances
8
An eco-friendly alternative exist:Fluorine-Free Foam (FFF)
Some FFF performed during LASTFIRE research compared to C6
FFF performances are certified under international standards
FFF are certified in the same category under EN, UL, ICAO standards
Each manufacturer offers its own formulations and technologies➔ FFF foams do not offer the same performance
FFF were successfully used in huge petrochemical fire at LUBRIZOL France

BIOEX Fluorine-Free Foam (FFF) compared to fluorinated foams (AFFF & AR-AFFF)
BIOEX FFF show same high level performance as AFFF & AR-AFFF, according to international standards
FFF foam blanket show longer burnback resistance than AFFF
Longer drainage time
Same application method (forceful and gentle application)
Same storage conditions
Same periodical lab tests
Compatibility of FFF foams with fluorinated foams
17
This is not a drop-in replacement for AFFF
Ensure FFF performance according to international standards (EN, UL, GESIP,
LASTFIRE…)
Ensure FFF performance on “specific fuels” (not tested yet by standards)
Verify the compatibility with foam mixing and foam discharge devices

PROTOCOL STEPS
1. Foam emptying from tank
2. Tank flushing with hot water and brushing
3. Rinsing water analysis at lab to confirm the absence of PFAS
4. Tank refilling with FFF
5. Test/commissioning
6. AFFF Foam destruction
