William E. “Bill” Shack will celebrate his 70th birthday on February 2, 2013. With a wonderful family, great friends, and bountiful blessings, there isn’t much more he could ask for, except one thing....

C losing the Gap!C losing the Gap!Bill asks that you please join him in “closing the gap” for bright, deserving students at his alma mater, Clark Atlanta University (CAU). The gap is the difference between what is left after a student uses all his or her resources to stay in school, including scholarships, student loans, grants and whatever other means their families can provide. The average annual income of CAU students’ families is $30,000. Sometimes the gap is as small as $500, but it can range up to $3,000. We cannot afford to lose these students because we haven’t closed the gap!

In the current economic climate, so many young scholars--especially those in historically black colleges and universities--need help eliminating the gap between the costs of higher education and their own resources. By participating in the Above Par Weekend Extravaganza, you can help close that gap and celebrate Bill’s 70th birthday in grand style!

Tyler Joshua Green, an honor student, grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana. He is the youngest student government president in the history of Clark Atlanta University. Tyler, who maintains a 3.6 grade point average, is majoring in religion and philosophy and plans to preach. Faculty, staff and students who know him anticipate that he will one day also grace the halls of the United States Congress. “Without considerable scholarship support” he says, “a college education would be a severe financial hardship for me and my family. Frankly, even with my GPA it would have been out of our grasp.”

Gabrielle Garbo’s dream to conquer the business world began on a small island, Trinidad. Today she’s making them come true as an MBA candidate in Clark Atlanta University’s School of Business. Gabby, who works hard to maintain her 4.0 GPA, says people often ask her if her dream was to earn an MBA in America. “I’m very quick to tell them,” she asserts, “that my dream was to earn an MBA at Clark Atlanta. Wherever you see leadership in business, you’ll find CAU.” Although her road to graduate school was paved with financial hurdles, scholarship support made the difference. Soon, Gabby will be making a difference, too!
