Trinity Times September 2016 “Serve Christ our Lord by welcoming, equipping & sending disciples” "there is need of only one thing . . . the better part" - Luke 10: 42 Dear faith family, The summer has flown past us once again. How much more quickly time indeed flies as I grow older - have any of you noticed this phenomena? Each day of the summer I drove or walked past our sign in the parking lot inviting me and all others to "Be still with Jesus". This was no accident. We carefully chose the words, gentle colours and picture to draw people to slow down - but to slow down with Jesus. Worship, time in God's holy Word, in prayer, in serving the Lord do not take "summer holidays". They may take a different form in the summer and the summer allows us longer days and often some break from the relentless schedules of the rest of our very structured and hectic paced lives, in which to "be still" with our God. We have hopefully had the opportunity to worship with others as we have travelled, camped, and spent time with family or friends away from home and now the time has come to gather together again in full measure as faith family here at Trinity. Rally Sunday is drawing close and I pray that you, like myself, look forward to all being together again as school begins, schedules increase and the festival season approaches and yet we are still called individually to spend time with our God! One of the most difficult of Bible stories for me has always been Jesus' spur of the moment visit to Mary and Martha's house in Bethany. He shows up (no doubt with many of the crowd he travels with) and Martha rushes to receive them all using her obvious gift of hospitality. Mary, her sister, the gentler more reflective type, sits at the feet of Jesus listening and basking in his presence. What nerve! Martha is doing meaningful and necessary work, work that has to get done! What is Mary doing? Martha complains to Jesus and I believe that all of us get what she is saying - there is work to be done and I need help! Someone has to do it! It is important! This is all true but Jesus' answer speaks to my heart over and over again and I pray will speak to yours as well as we all prepare to take up our busy, important schedules and lives. Jesus says, gently I imagine but oh so firmly, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her." (Luke 10:41-42) There it is! What needs doing is good, important and necessary but Mary has chosen the better part and what Mary receives from Jesus will not be taken away from her! It will be hers forever! (Join me in a few moments of letting that sink in - deep into our hearts, our minds and our very souls). I have just finished reading three very different books in preparation for this fall's Bible study opportunities here at Trinity. I have been struck by the same phrase in each of these books which echoes the truth we just heard in the lives of Mary and Martha. It is a phrase coined by Charles Hummel, "the tyranny of the urgent". Hummel writes, "we live in constant tension between the urgent and the important . . . prayer and Bible study can wait. But the urgent tasks call for instant action - endless demands pressure every hour and day." We do indeed live in urgency, in a flurry of endless activity and schedules - we are on a treadmill that is flying and so are the days of our lives. Where is our time at the feet of our Saviour? Where is our strength and help to come from when life overwhelms us, when trials come? Where is the richness of a deeper joy as we better know our Creator and our God - the Giver of all good gifts? My dear family of faith, I face every day the desire to "do" and fight the need to "be". What about you? I long for down time, family time, me time. What about you? I struggle to understand that when Jesus is the hub of my life, the center of all, the beginning and the end - then all else will fall into place. What about you? That is His promise to me, to you, to all who acknowledge him as their Saviour and their Lord. He calls for first place in our lives and assures us, as he did Martha and Mary, that what we receive from Him will not be taken away and is the better part. We are changed at the feet of our Lord, as were Martha and Mary, the bold one became meek and the mild one courageous. So - fall is approaching. Schedules are filling up to overflowing. Stop. Take a breath. Pray. Listen. Wait. Seek out a study to intentionally feed your heart, your mind, your soul. Set aside time for worship to be refueled, refreshed, and realigned each week. Come sit at the feet of Jesus - there are many opportunities being offered, you can read on and find the one (or more) that will work for you. Gather with others who walk the same journey and face the same struggles. Come and live out the words of 10,000 reasons by Matt Redman - "Bless the Lord, O my soul, o my soul, worship His holy name. Sing like never before, o my soul, worship His holy name!" With much love and in service to Christ our Lord, Maggie

We would like to

remind all who use

the church building

that it is a good fire

safety practice to

keep all interior

doors closed,

especially when the church is unoccupied. The last

person(s) leaving the building should ensure that

lights are out, interior doors closed and all exterior

doors locked. This includes the large overhead door

to the hall, kitchen doors and serving window door,

classrooms and doors to the sanctuary. In case of

fire while in the building, leave immediately by the

most direct route, closing all doors as you go. We

pray for God’s blessings as we strive to use the gift

of the building as an extension to spread the Good

News and Jesus Love.

Thank you to all who used their resources to help with food, crafts, decorating, organizing, photography, cleaning, AV, music, games, registration, teaching and childcare to witness to Christ’s love

A rowdy, excited group gathered at Trinity Lutheran for the week of July 4-8 to explore the theme "Barnyard

Round Up - where Jesus Gathers Us In!" The theme was so fitting for our community. It allowed town children to learn about farming and the farm kids to really show their farm heritage to others all under the umbrella of Jesus love that “Gathers Us In”.

Over 200 (kids & youth) enjoyed music, games, snack, Bible stories, crafts and videos each morning growing in faith and friendship in Jesus' name. Highlights for this year included Barney, a stunning horse with gentle ways, who spent Monday with us and the Petting Zoo on Thursday with cows, horses, sheep, chickens, pigs, puppy, kittens and baby bunnies! Each child present made a new friend. Two songs will always resonate with us, "Heaps of Lambs - uh, huh, uh, huh," and "You Will Never Run Away"! We will remember that Jesus is the Good Shepherd who lays down His life for the sheep. (John 10:11)

For our mission this year we bought goats and chickens to help families in Haiti through Haiti Arise. The mission resonated with the kids and families. We had the largest mission offering ever ($1,268.15) which is remarkable for our tough economic time. We also collected food for our local food bank.

The youth volunteers were an amazing group. All attended a required training session helping them to hit the ground running on Monday and to take leadership and come up with workable solutions to any problems that arose during the week. Thursday they had a fun lake day with beautiful weather, had a blast and still showed eager and ready to worship for parent’s night sharing.

We extend a big thank you to all of our adult leaders and our members for their many donations of time and resources, our youth leaders for their energy, joy and commitment, and to all the families who entrusted us with the care of their precious kids for this fun and busy week! Every year this week of Vacation Bible School reminds us of what can be accomplished when people come together and use their God-given gifts serving others in Christ' name - To God be the Glory, now and always!

Mark your calendars for next summer and join us - July 10-14, 2017 for "Mighty Fortress: In Jesus, the Victory is Won!"

We encourage each of our people to pray about your gifts and how you might be involved in this ministry next year.

Stewardship Article

The devil, though defeated by the death,

resurrection, and ascension of our Lord Jesus

Christ, remains a very capable and clever foe. He is

smarter than we are. He’s been watching us and

taking notes for a very long time. He knows what

we want, and he knows how to lure us away. And

he does this by telling us what we want to hear.

That’s what makes it so difficult.

To us who are greedy, he says: “You are not greedy.

You are prudent. You are frugal. You are a good

steward with your money. God doesn’t want you

not to have all the things you want. He wants you to

be happy. He wants you to have the latest and

greatest toys for both young and old.” So if you

consider yourself to be wise in the way of money

and finances, beware of who just might be telling

you these things.

Satan is a liar. He tells us what we want to hear. He

lures us away from repentance and confession and

faith, so that we harden our consciences and place

our souls in peril. We must not underestimate the

enemy. We have all taken his bait. We have all

failed in this. None of us can say that we have

fought this temptation to hold back with everything

we have and won.

And we must repent. Yes, God wants us to be

happy. But this happiness is never at the expense of

faithfulness. We have a calling. We are a member

of His family, the church. That relationship places a

duty upon us: to give a generous proportion of the

first fruits of the income He provides.

Only God is true to His Word. Only God is true to

His promises. His promises never fail. His Word

endures forever. His mercies are new every

morning. He is faithful. He provides everything that

we need. He provides food and clothes, house and

home, everything that we pray for in the fourth

petition of the Lord’s Prayer.

There are a whole host of things that we have that

we do not need. The question that we need to ask

ourselves is whether these have come at the expense

of our faithful, generous proportion of the first fruits

of our income. If they have, then we must repent,

turning away from our selfishness to Him who is

faithful by giving His Son into death so that we are

reconciled to Him and justified in His sight.

The devil will always tell you what you want to

hear. But God tells us and gives us what we need to

hear. With law and gospel, he cuts us to the heart,

so that we will repent and believe His Word and

promises. He is faithful. He is good. He will not

forsake you, or leave you destitute. So believe and

trust in Him. And you will not only be happy. You

will be blessed.

“Serve Christ our Lord by welcoming, equipping & sending disciples”

The annual gathering of LCMC is taking place in Denver, Colorado, this October 2 – 5. Unlike most church conventions, there is very little “business” – at most a half hour or so

over the whole gathering. The majority of the gathering offers presentations on ministry possibilities, guest speakers and Bible study time, small group learning experiences and a lot of networking with others across the world who are serving Christ through LCMC. Of special interest is the display area, where from 40 – 50 ministries share information about mission possibilities, ministry ideas and congregational resources. Trinity is allowed two representatives, including a voting delegate. If you are interested in attending, please contact the church office. You can find more information about the gathering by going to www.lcmc.net/ and accessing “Events”, then “Annual Events”, then “Gathering”. ___________________________________________________________________

Do you have eye glasses that you can no longer wear? Please drop your old glasses off in the box labelled “Glasses” underneath the portable bulletin board in the foyer and give someone the gift of sight. There are many in this world who could never afford to buy eyeglasses and you can contribute to renew their sight ___________________________________________________________________________________________

FORCED TO SHUT DOWN! Do you have an interest in or concern about the future of congregational life and ministry in small or rural congregations in south eastern Alberta and south western Saskatchewan? If so, you might be interested in attending a meeting in Medicine Hat on September 10 at 11am. It will be held at the home of Rev. Mac deWaal – and he has offered to provide lunch if you let him know you are going to attend! For more information you can talk to Pastor John or congregational president Gordon Frank, or you can call Pastor Mac at 403-952-7817 __________________________________________________
