CB Cares’ 18th Annual MLK Day of Service Opening Ceremony Program
Join us Monday, January 18th as we celebrate the life-long legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a
specially produced video montage which will showcase guest speakers, CB Cares Volunteer Teens, Youth
Four Unity, Second Baptist Anointed Dance Ministry and Backbench Boys. The video presentation will be
shared Monday, January 18th via Facebook “Watch Party”. Special thanks to CB East’s Mr. John Benedix
and his video production department for their collaborative efforts to help produce this video.
Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 restrictions we are not able to gather for service projects as we have in
years past. We are kicking off the MLK Day weekend in partnership with our community partners in the
Borough of Doylestown and Bucks County Opportunity Council to host a food drive. Now more than ever
our neighbors are facing food insecurities especially after the holiday season. Please consider taking the time
to drop off a donation of food on Friday 1/15. For complete list of need items and additional information
(page 4).

Danny Kenney CB South High School Grade 12
“Danny Kenney has been a positive peer influence on me since 7th grade at
Tamanend Middle School. Danny always goes out of his way to say hello
to me and makes sure I am doing well. Danny is an active participant with
Athletes Helping Athletes (AHA) and always made sure to volunteer when
he knew I was going to be an Honorary Captain. He would sit with me at
the basketball and football games and kept me engaged asking me about current
animation movies and new songs on my playlist. Danny also participated in
Unified Track where he would encourage me to run fast and always try my
best. Danny’s compassion towards special needs friends is evident when he
bought an “autism awareness” sweatshirt and couldn’t wait to show me. Danny reaches out to my
mom to see what’s new with me if he doesn’t get to see me at school. He also invited me pumpkin
picking and encouraged me through the corn maze. I couldn’t ask for a better best friend who is also
a positive peer influence. Thank you, Danny for being my best friend.”
Simme Salguero Tohickon Middle School Grade 9
The pandemic has been a difficult time for everyone, and teens have been
especially hard hit by the social isolation. Simme and her friends have been
especially proactive in keeping each other positive. They have been sending
each other cards, letters, and gifts by mail, which both maintain their strong
friendships and also provide much-needed rays of sunshine in the day. They
have also been supporting each other in creating small online businesses for
selling handmade bracelets, stickers, and other items on Etsy and through
Instagram. They have fun trading items with each other, and also promoting
each other online. Thanks to her friends’ support, Simme has so far made
~$1500 in online sales, which has been a huge morale-boost for her, and also
has given her a lot of work that has kept her busy and happy in the lockdown.
Shannon O’Leary John Barclay Elementary Grade 6
If it wasn’t for Shannon’s friends, it is entirely possible that she wouldn’t even be able
to attend school. Shannon suffers from social anxiety that has gotten increasingly
worse as she gets older. She has an extremely difficult time making friends and
initiating conversation with others. When she started kindergarten at Barclay, she
was fortunate enough to be paired with a student with whom something “clicked”,
and they became best friends. Since then, she has added only two other friends into
her life. The four of them together provide her with the super powers that she needs
just to face what she perceives each day might bring. Not only do these friends offer
her the support that she needs while in school, but they have been her catalyst for
wanting to do activities outside of school. Although Shannon has many interests, she
could never act on them because it was too overwhelming for her to try
something alone. However, because her friends will not let her retreat, she has now participated in acting
classes, dance classes, art classes, basketball, and even summer camps. These friends continuously invite her
into their lives by encouraging her to try the things that they love. When Shannon is around these three
friends, her whole demeanor changes. She becomes confident, brave, witty, and relaxed. Her anxiety is
gone because she knows that her friends accept her for who she is and love her unconditionally. The
positive influence that her friends have on her life is invaluable. They not only enhance her life, they
actually provide her with one!
