A s part of St. Pius X's 50th Anniversary and
the Diocese of Lafayette's Cen-tennial Anniversary, St. Pius began an on-going celebration
Thursday, June 14th, when a Eucharistic Holy Hour was held in church. The following day, a beautiful and uplifting 50th Anniversary Mass and reception was held for all parishioners. Five priests, in-cluding Fr. Steve, Fr. Joel and three former priests of St. Pius, four deacons and five seminarians were present, accompanied by the St. Pius Choir, Kevin Martin, organist, and two lay ministers. After Mass, Fr. Steve presented Priscilla (Pris) Hebert, a longtime parish-ioner, and more so, a faithful and true servant, with the Bishop’s Service Award, for her many years of volunteering at St. Pius. A wonderful reception, hosted by the Women’s Guild, was held in Leonpacher Hall. We thank all who came together to mark this im-portant date in our history. Come and Celebrate the Centennial of the Diocese of Lafayette! Fȇte-Dieu du Vermil-ion, Eucharistic Boat Procession up the Vermil-ion River, will take place on the Feast of the Assumption, Wednesday, August 15. All are invited to a Mass in French at 8am at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Abbeville to begin the day. Bishop Glen Provost of the Lake Charles Diocese will preside and give the homi-ly. At the end of Mass there will be a procession from Church with the Blessed Sacrament and a statue of Mary across the draw bridge to the old River Side Restaurant. At 10:00 am 121 boats will embark in procession (one for each of the 121 parishes of the Diocese) and make their way up Bayou Vermilion to Lafayette. The boat procession will stop in Milton at Wawee’s at 11:35 am for recitation of the rosary and Bene-diction of the Blessed Sacrament. The flotilla will re-commence at 12:35 pm and continue upstream, arriving at Rufino’s in River Ranch at 1:40 pm for Rosary and Benediction. The boat procession will embark once again at 2:40 pm and arrive at Beaver Park at about 3:20 pm. At 3:45 pm a foot procession with the Blessed Sac-rament and a statue of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary will leave the landing and process up University Avenue in Lafayette all the way to the Cathedral of St. John the Evange-list. Solemn Vespers will be prayed at 5:00 pm and Holy Mass will follow at 5:30 pm with Bishop Douglas Deshotel to conclude the historic day. Confessions will be heard in mobile units at each of the stops along the way. Don’t miss this “once in a hundred years’ event!” Schedule your vacation day now and register your boat today! Vocational Chalice Ministry This ministry involves hosting the chalice in your home for one week and reciting a special prayer from a prayer card daily. If interested, please call Vivian Begnaud at 235-1348 or the Parish Office 232-4656. Healing Hearts: A Catholic support group for WOMEN, whose relationships have been negatively impacted by the pornography addiction or sexual addiction of a loved one. This may include a spouse, boyfriend, family member or friend. Strict confi-dentiality is observed by all members. Meetings are held on a weekly basis. To the Heights: Young Adult Encounter The encounter will focus on forming Mission Driven Young Adult Disciples. Our goal is to walk with young adults in and throughout the Lafayette area letting them know that we wel-come, honor, and empower them to succeed. Young Adults make huge decisions in their lives. These decisions can be frightening so our day will be centered on keynote speakers rang-ing from Fr. Howard Blessing, pastor of Ho-ly Cross Catholic Church, Katie Austin for-mation director for Ragin Cajun Catholics, Dustin Bertrand with God Made Self Driven Ministries bringing his gifts and talents, Kyle Melancon Youth and Young Adult Discipleship Coordinator for Holy Cross, and Julien Dupuis. St. Pius Youth
Life Teen is our high school youth ministry. It is open to all
students who are in high school, grades 9th-12th, regard-
less of the school they attend. We meet on Sunday nights
following the 5 PM Mass in the Parish Life Center, from
6:00 pm to 7:45 pm.
During the week, we host different Small Groups for the
guys and girls. These groups are opportunities for our
young people to build community and share life together
as they journey and grow in their relationships with the

EDGE, our middle school ministry opened to all 6th-8th
grade students, will be held at the Bayou House, on the
second and fourth Monday of the month. The Bayou
House is located at 309 E Bayou Pkwy.

One Eight is our Confirmation process for high school Jun-
iors (or Seniors). If you are part of that process, be sure to

Summer 2018—Save the Dates

7th. And then we will once again join Life Teen for the
Restore Mission Camp here in Lafayette, to work on
homes that were affected by the August 2016 floods. The
Restore Mission Camp will be held the week of July 22nd
to the 27th.

NACFLM Conference - Marriage and Family as the Heart of the New Evangelization MARRIAGE AND FAMILY AS THE HEART OF THE NEW EVANGELIZATION is the theme for this year’s annual National Association of Catholic Family Life Ministers (NACFLM) conference on July 15-17, 2018 at the CajunDome Convention Center. B urying the de-ceased is a Cor-
poral Work of Mercy and has been part of the Church’s pastoral work form the very beginning (Catechism, no 2447). Death has been van-quished by Jesus Christ’s resurrection and His prom-ise that all who follow Him will share in a like resur-rection to new and everlasting life (Romans 6:5). The Church’s funeral rites emphasize this essential truth of Christi-anity in the three stations of the funeral rite: the vigil, the funeral mass, and the graveside service.
The Christian funeral is a liturgical cele-bration of the Church. The ministry of the Church in this instance aims at express-ing efficacious communion with the de-ceased, at the participation in that com-munion of the community gathered for the funeral, and at the proclamation of eternal l i fe to the communi ty . (Catechism, no 1684)
The funeral of a loved one presents us as pastors of sours with a wonderful op-portunity to catechize those who attend the funeral and to assure the family of the deceased of the entire Church’s so-licitude and support in their time of need. In an emotional time like a funeral, extra pastoral sensitivity is required of us. Many times family members or friends of the deceased have not been practicing their faith, may be or other faiths or have no faith at all. The opportunity for pasto-ral outreach and evangelization is full of possibilities simply because in the face of death and grief human beings are drawn into the true perspective of faith in the risen Christ (Catechism, no 1687).
Unfortunately, the medicalization, privati-zation, and secularization of death and dying are becoming more and more the norm. Inherent in these “efficiencies” is the escapist desire to make death invisi-ble and convenient, “getting over it as
quickly as possible.” I suggest to you that what is at stake is the avoidance of the mystery of death and the loss of the spir-itual and emotional benefits experienced when ritual and grief are authentically integrated. Some parents do not even bring their children to wakes, thereby depriving the little ones of the opportunity to consider the bigger picture of life, death and eternity. Fortunately, the Church has been praying and reflecting on these mysteries since the salvific events of Holy Week, culminating in the proclamation of the Lord’s resurrection.
Bishop Deshotel is requesting that clergy be very attentive to celebrating the Fu-neral Rites of the Church as the Church intends. These rites have been carefully prepared and faithfully handed on. For example, the Vigil and/or Rosary before the funeral Mass can be a time of prayer, reflection and consolation. If a family requests time for a eulogy, it is also an appropriate time for that.
“A funeral for any deceased member of the faithful must generally be celebrated in his or her parish church.” (Canon 1177) Therefore, the funeral Mass should always be celebrated in the par-ish church of the deceased. The Church building and the altar are symbols of Christ and our communion with and in Him. These symbols emphasize that it is through the Church, the body of Christ, that we are reborn in Baptism, nourished with the Bread of Life in the Eucharist, forgiven of sin in Penance, and finally ushered to eternal life by the family of the Church. Only on a rare occasion and for
a serious reason should a funeral Mass be conducted in a funeral home. Such a case would be of an aged spouse of the deceased or the grave inconvenience of transporting a physically handicapped relative. The Bishop indicates that this should be the exception, not the norm.
The Bishop later goes on to state that the mere convenience of having everything in one place is not a reason to forego having the funeral Mass in the parish Church. Put another way, we asked to consider that the typical deceased Cath-olic is nearly always baptized in the church, celebrates their first Confession in the church, receives their first Holy Communion in the church (nearly in the sport where the casket lays), is con-firmed with the Holy Chrism in the church, (if married) professes their nup-tial vows in the church, walks repeatedly the Station of the Cross in the church, kneels and prays before the tabernacle joined by family and parishioners (in good times and bad) in the church – and now (confoundingly), their final commen-dation and Mass of Christian burial is offered in the funeral home. Surely, only a serious and exceptional reason could suffice for a reason!
Routinely separating the funeral rites from the parish church, deprives the un-churched, disaffected Catholics and per-son with different faith beliefs from en-countering a living community and the transcendent symbolism of the house of God. The Bishop reflects that he has witnessed many people return to Mass after the death of a loved one because they experienced once again the pull of eternal life, support in grief and the need for the grace of the Sacraments. Consid-er also, that for some people, a Catholic funeral might be the only occasion to cross the threshold of a Catholic Church. Let’s give God’s holy people the benefit of our Catholic Traditions.

St. Peter Dedication On June 29, 1953, the Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul, the newly constructed church of St. Peter in New Iberia was consecrated by Bish-op Jules Jeanmard. The church was the vi-sion of their new pastor, Fr. Albert Bacque. After over a decade of fundraising, the parish-ioners of St. Peter raised approximately half a million dollars and the construction of the new church began in 1951. Two years later, the massive structure was completed with seating for 1,200 parishioners. Two 90-foot tall tow-ers, decorated with large white rosaries, mark the prominence of the Church dedicated to the “Prince of the Apostles.”
