Experience …

Come for Tenino’s history, from an old sandstone quarry now a swimming pool, to the 15 majestic sandstone buildings in the

downtown and a lesson in Great Depression economics via wooden money at the Tenino

Depot Museum. Stay for a relaxing day outdoors in the Tenino City Park and visiting the many

inviting downtown stores. Mix both the old and the new by attending the Oregon Trail Days

celebrating the fourth weekend in July.

A day in Tenino should include some time in the great outdoors and it starts in the Tenino City Park. Begin with a summer swim at the quarry pool — truly a priceless, unique gem of the Northwest. Following a swim, take a pleasant hike in the nature trails above the quarry and then rent a picnic shelter or throw down a blanket. Next up is a leisurely walk, a strenuous jog or a bike ride on The Yelm-Tenino Trail which intersects with the 22-mile Chehalis Western Trail, linking the cities of Yelm, Rainier, Tenino, Tumwater, Lacey, Olympia, and Woodard Bay on the Puget Sound. As a stop on the old Oregon Trail that led to the Hudson’s Bay Company, the area now known as Tenino has a rich history. The first settler — Stephen Hodgden — staked a donation land claim on the banks of Scatter Creek in 1851 after failing to strike it big in the California gold rush. That land claim led to a regular stop by the stage coach road from the Columbia River to Olympia. By 1872 the railroad reached Hodgden’s property and the new station was named “Tenino.” The founding of the first sandstone quarry in Tenino in 1888 spurred more growth for the city. Today that quarry is the site of the city park and pool. The sandstone and nearby logging attracted more business and by 1905 Tenino had three hotels, several saloons, two doctors, four grocery stores, and a variety of other shops. But when the sandstone industry was replaced by concrete buildings, Tenino’s fortunes started to wane. The Great Depression, while hitting the community hard, put Tenino on the map when the Tenino Chamber of Commerce started issuing wooden money as emergency scrip following the failure of The Citizens Bank of Tenino. Today the wooden money is famous worldwide and the sandstone buildings unique. Take a walking tour of 15 sandstone buildings in the city core, from the Tenino Depot Museum to the Masonic Temple. After the tour, stay for the quaint shops — including a wine tasting room and gift shop, chocolates and a relaxing spa. Just a short drive from Olympia, Grand Mound or Yelm, come to Tenino for its history. Stay for its small town charm.
