The President’s PageCyndy Klepinger

Cycling is my drug. Is it yours? Science confirms that our bikes help

make us happy. Dr. Kim Chronister, a psychologist in Los Angeles, said when riding, a spike in neurochemicals, such as serotonin and dopamine, occurs. These chemicals help relieve pain and improve moods. She added that when you get a hit of endorphins, they trigger the same receptors in a brain as some pain medicines.

Not only does cycling make one happy, it may affect the aging process. British researchers conducted a study in 2014 that supported the theory that exercise may impact physical aging. To test their theory, they studied a group of older men and women who had remained physically active through recreational cycling as they aged. The dozens of female and male riders studied were between the ages of 55 and 79, had been cycling for decades and still pedaled about 400 miles a month.

In the study, the scientists measured a range of the cyclists’ physical and cognitive abilities and compared them to those of sedentary older people and much younger men and women. The cyclists proved to have reflexes, memories, balance and metabolic profiles that more closely resembled those of 30-years-old than of the sedentary older group.

The bottom line: ride often! You may be happier, and you just may slow the aging process!

I look forward to seeing you on one of the many rides offered in the upcoming months!

RIDE LEADERS NEEDEDRide Director Patty Gaspar recently hosted a planning session to discuss the 2018 DBTC Ride Schedule. Attendees included: Fun & Intermediate North ride leader Jeff Krinsky 720-373-9107 [email protected], Fun South ride leader Ellen Fitzpatrick 303-756-2517 [email protected], Leisure Rides leader Lin Hark 303-578-9369 [email protected], Weekday Rides leader Patty Gaspar 303-618-5069 [email protected], and MTB Chuck Caldwell 303-807-1562 [email protected].

During the meeting, it was determined that the club is in need of more ride leaders. If any member is interested in becoming a ride leader, the group has outlined a few simple steps to have you prepared and ready to roll. Contact one of the coordinators listed above, and they will help you plan a ride – even riding with you on your first ride to familiarize you with the process. The rewards of being a ride leader include: having others to ride with, meeting new people, and if you lead five rides or more, you will be able to attend the VRL in November for FREE! Plus, other benefits are being planned to thank our volunteers for the 2018 season.

Also, if you have suggestions on ways to improve the ride schedule, please contact Patty directly: [email protected].

Patty shared that as membership changes, she misses some of the rides formerly offered by DBTC. Can you help her by volunteering to lead her and others on familiar – as well as – new routes?

After the Annual Kick-off on Saturday, April 14, Patty will lead a ride to Chatfield Reservoir and back. She and other ride leaders will talk about what is involved in leading rides. For more information, see page 10. Club officers and ride coordinators recently met to discuss

the upcoming year.

Spring Road Ride Training

Many club members participated in road riding training rides in March. The rides were between 25 to 35 miles with a pace of 15 to 25 mph on flat ground. Great training for the 2018 ride season.

Ride Leaders: Please remember, if you have a guest or a non-member on any of your rides, the Membership Committee needs to know so we can welcome them to join us on future rides as a NEW (or renewing) MEMBER! Please photocopy your Sign-in Sheet and email a scan of it to Lin Hark at: [email protected]. Thank you for helping us grow our Club!

Station! There’s now a Bike Fix-it

Station at the Cottonwood Creek Trail Head in Cherry

tools to use if needed. The station was a gift in

the memory of Matthew James Luther.

Jeff Krinsky has decided to start the riding season off by leading back to back rides the first full weekend of the season. He has put together two rides, over one weekend, based on the successful free beverage rides from Labor Day Weekend last season as shown in these photos. These are sure to be a great time.

The rides are planned as follows:

Saturday, April 7th: Riders will start from the City of Cuernavaca Park, ride to the Cherry Creek reservoir and back. Free beverages at REI Downtown afterwards.

Sunday, April 8th: Ride from the City of Cuernavaca Park along the Platte River stopping for free beverages at the Nixon Coffee House at Hudson Gardens. Members return along the Platte.

Jeff would love to see everyone’s smiling faces from last year, and welcomes new riders to join along for the fun! In case you didn’t attend the VRL last November, Jeff was the DBTC Ride Leader of the year. His rides are always spectacular, fun, and well attended by members. If you are looking for a fun way to kick start the season, this is the perfect weekend to join in! Looking forward to seeing you there.

First Weekend Back to Back Rides with Jeff!April 7th and 8th, 2018

THE WIND!Early spring usually means wind, but it seems as if it’s been particularly windy this year. What to do?

1. Pick a route with a lot of climbing. That way you won’t notice the wind!2. Count it as free training as you usually work twice as hard for the same output.3. Ride in a lower gear than normal. It might cost you some speed, but you’ll be able to keep your stamina up longer. Give up a little speed for endurance. Staying in a higher gear will overwork your legs and cause you to run out of energy sooner.4. Plan an out and back route where you battle the headwind going out, then (hopefully) you will have a tailwind on the way back.5. If the wind is blowing from the west, take the light rail to Golden and ride back to downtown.

Last year, as shown in the photos, many happy riders enjoyed free beverages over Labor Day weekend with Jeff.

This mid-coast area boasts most of Maine’s 70 lighthouses, and our bicycle tour will take us to at least 10 of them. We’ll kick off our tour in Portland with a guided five-lighthouse ride and wrap up our week of bicycling with a lobster boat tour of Frenchman Bay, off the coast of Bar Harbor, that offers views of off-shore lighthouses and puffin colonies. Enjoy a couple of Maine’s famous treats: whoopie pies and Maine wild blueberry pies!Note: Tour leader is willing to relax the previous requirement that participants ride together. Some leaders always want to be in the front, others are perfectly happy in the middle of the pack and figure those ahead better wait. When you are the leader you get to pick the route and make the rules. The strength of the club is in the ride schedule. We need more leaders for a greater variety of rides. Stadium Blvd and drive south on Stadium Blvd for about 1.3 miles; then turn right onto Academy Drive and go west for about ½ mile and bear right into the Falcon Trail parking lot. The trailhead is at the west end of the parking lot. Overview: Join Bob Kochevar (303-870-6833) and other MTB group enthusiasts on this fun, approx 13.5 miles, single track loop trail which tours the grounds of the US Air Force Academy. Rebuilt about ten years ago, it boasts long climbs, flowy singletrack downhills, and beautiful views as it crosses high prairie and low mountain woodland terrain. A couple of short, moderately technical sections add interest. Description: The trail is 95% single track, on dirt, including exposed plateau and shaded forest riding. The trail covers rolling terrain, with climbs and fun descents. You’ll end up generally climbing to the high point on the west side of the Academy grounds, about 1,400 feet above the start of the loop. One potential hike-a-bike section can be avoided by a 0.2 mile detour. There are a few road and stream crossings, but it’s hard to miss the trail which is well marked. From there, it’s mostly downhill, with a few climbs to keep you honest, back around the loop to the start. Further details on the Falcon Trail Loop, including a ride profile, can be found on the “MTBProject” app, and you can find a PDF map by googling “USAFA Trails Map”. Following our ride, we will have lunch at Pikes Pike Brewing Co. in Monument, or Colorado Mountain Brewery, in North Colo. Springs. NOTE: Subject to US Air Force Academy access restrictions. ID is required for driver and passengers. Auto access from the north gate of USAFA only. Vehicles can be subject to a search.
