Following the reconstruction and enlargement of the Club, which was completed in 1982, the COM turned its aention to the pressing business of finances, and in particular how to generate revenue and cut costs. The “sale of ‘rights’ (names on) special rooms,” was one of the five areas identified for consideration. It was even suggested that “the increased number of rooms available in the expanded premises make some form of identification imperative.” At the time, the named rooms already in existence included the Kremlin, the Wolves Den, a7, Ace of Clubs, Bar U, J.A.L. and the notorious, “Mr. Smith’s Bedroom.” The story behind the naming of Mr. Smith’s Bedroom highlights the remarkable intel- ligence and creative capacity of the Club’s early membership. The story involves liquor and necessity - the mother of inven- tion - the invention of the fictitious “Mr. Smith” and his “Bedroom.” During Alberta’s second round of prohibition, 1916-24, the Club was not permied to serve liquor, a sure fire recipe for disaster and financial ruin. It didn’t take long for the mem- bership, which included some of the finest legal minds in the country, to come up with a plan. They set aside a room where members could store their own hooch. A bed was placed in the room, and voila – the Club was in “compliance” with provin- cial legislation that only allowed the serving of booze to a room with a bed. The rest is history. In May 1983, the House Commiee, Chaired by Mr. R.O. Lindseth, presented a “Proposal Regarding the Naming of Ranch- men’s Club Rooms.” The document reviewed past practice, provided guidelines for the future and offered suggestions for further naming. “It has been customary to designate the rooms and salons of the Ranchmen’s Club by names, usually associ- ated with or derived from the Club’s history. Some members may wish to commemorate or otherwise identify some special or long-standing association with the Club by contributing to the furnishings and possibly naming of a room.” Consider- ations included “good taste, conservative design, and recognition of the Club roots in the Alberta ranching community.” In the ensuing months the President met with families who had a long association with the Club, to discuss whether or not they might be interested in “naming” or sponsoring a room. By December the first firm arrangement had been made with the Lougheed family for the naming of the “large 3rd Floor Meeting Room entering off the south side main lounge near the fire place.” The House Commiee reported, “We have arranged for a presentation of a number of photographs, a large paint- ing and other memorabilia from Senator Lougheed’s time to be placed in the room. The plaque designating the room is near completion, and it is hoped to inaugurate the room at some suitable occasion with a small ceremony.” On May 23rd 1984, the dedication of the Lougheed Room took place in conjunction with a Black Tie Dinner aended by 149 members. The Ranchmen’s Club Newsleer of June 1986 reported, “members will notice the gradual replacement of the old (and very forgeable) room numbers by formal names, honoring distinguished early members who contributed, and whose successors continue to contribute, significantly to the Club and to the community.” Black Tie Dinners were held in 1986 to celebrate the opening of the Benne Room (10th April) and the Glenbow Ranche Room (June 5th) and in 1987 for the A7 Room (27th March). The sell-out crowds at these events were good for business and morale - an opportunity to thank donors, invite guests and celebrate the illustrious history of the Club and its’ members. In the years that followed, arrangements were made for the naming and sponsorship of both private function rooms and din- ing areas on the second floor (McPherson, Jephson, Mary Dover, A E Cross, and the Smith Bedroom) and third floor (Burns, Harford, Glenbow, Lougheed, and Benne). These rooms continue to pay tribute to men, women and families with long- standing connections to the Ranchmen’s Club and the community. Mr. Smith, you’re in good company. All of the Club’s membership is invited to participate in golf, golf & dinner or just dinner, for either or both of these two dates. The third component is the Henry Smith Proper in which players compete to win the coveted Henry Smith Trophy. This tournament is arranged in a double knockout format and will be played throughout the sum-mer of 2011. Each participant will play at least two games - time and place to be determined with your opponent. The Proper is a great opportunity for new members to meet other members of the Club. PAST EVENTSRecord Attendance for Mayor’s Event!A record crowd of almost 200 members & guests attended the February 2nd Speaker’s Night with Mayor Nenshi. As well as gaining insight into his vision for the city, patrons sang Happy Birthday and presented a cake to Mayor Nenshi who turned 39 years old on the 2nd - the occasion also marked the Mayor’s first 100 days in office. President Penner presented the Mayor with a privileged membership from the Club.

Black Stallion/Janice Beaton Wine Dinner February 4th!The Black Stallion Spirits and Janice Beaton Cheese Wine dinner was a great success because it was done a little differently. Various cheeses were used in the preparation of each dinner course and wines were paired accordingly. Attendees also got to taste the cheese in its raw state for comparison purposes.

Valentine’s Dinners February 12th & 14th!Eighty-seven members & guests enjoyed the Special Valentine’s Menu offered over two nights in celebration of Valentine’s Day. Everyone was treated to complimentary keepsake photographs, a special gift of Pastry Chef Katelin Bland’s chocolates and a fresh rose for all the ladies to take home.
