LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT & CHRIST CANDLES7 pm Nora Arabaci and Alison Sieber

9 pm Carolyn and Olivia Peppler Leader: The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; People: Those who lived in the land of deep darkness—on them light has shined. Leader: For a child has been born for us, a son given to us. People: He is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Leader: Tonight we light the four Advent candles and the Christ candle. The first candle is the candle of Hope. We wait with hopeful expectation for God to break into our world. The second is the candle of peace. In a world filled with conflict, we await the peace only Christ can bring. The third candle is the candle of Joy. Joyfully we welcome the Christ-Child into our world. The fourth candle is the candle of Love. God’s amazing love comes into our world in the form of an infant. And tonight we light the Christ candle which reminds us that Christ is the light of the world. May we keep this light bright in our lives through the year and share it with all we meet.

OFFERTORY In the Bleak Mid-Winter arr. M. Helman Faith Ringers and String Quartet

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

CAROL #44 O Little Town of Bethlehem ST. LOUIS O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by. Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting light; The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.

O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray; Cast out our sin, and enter in, be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell; O come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel!

THE PROPHECY Isaiah 9:2-7 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness— on them light has shined. You have multiplied the nation, you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as people exult when dividing plunder. For the yoke of their burden, and the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian. For all the boots of the tramping warriors and all the garments rolled in blood shall be burned as fuel for the fire. For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peace for the throne of David and his kingdom. He will establish and uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time onward and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
