Dr. Bouquot was trained at the University of Minnesota, Mayo Clinic and the Royal College of Dentistry, Copenhagen, Denmark, with a Bone Pathology Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic. For 26 years he chaired diagnostic science departments in two dental schools: West Virginia University and the University of Texas in Houston. He is co-author of the most popular textbook of oral pathology and has been President of the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology, a Senior Visiting Scientist of the Mayo Clinic, President of two national oral pathology organizations and Director of the American Cancer Society’s national Board of Directors. He has won more than 50 teaching,

service and research awards, including the St. George Medal, the highest award given by the American Cancer Society, the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Minnesota, the Lifetime Achievement Award from WVU, the Distinguished Dentist Award from the West Virginia Dental Association, and the highest award in his specialty, Honorary Life Membership, by the International Association of Oral Pathologists. He has published more than 320 papers, abstracts and book chapters. Dr. Bouquot’s precancer, oral disease epidemiology and bone research has been cited thousands of times in the literature. He has received a NIH grant to study HPV and has given more than 1,600 research and continuing education presentations in more than 30 countries and in each of the US states. In his seminars he emphasizes clinical features of disease, differential diagnosis and disease management, with much practical information based on his lifetime experience in an active clinical oral pathology (oral medicine) practice and one of the nation’s largest oral pathology biopsy services. He manages the two most popular oral pathology websites, which received 4.4 million hits last year. His BouquotToGo Power Point presentations of disease are used by thousands of dental professionals worldwide.

36 Shades of GrayThe Fascination and Frustration of Radiographic Diagnosis in the 21st Century

The jaws are the most unique bones in the body, with more types of diseases than any other bones…and every dentist MUST be an expert in identifying them. The advent of bisphosphonates, dental implants and cone beam CT imaging has brought a new appreciation for the always difficult process of radiographic interpretation of disease. This process is made even more challenging by two facts: 1) the medical profession cannot help much, it’s up to dentistry to do the job; 2) some of us can see up to 36 shades of gray while others can see only 6. This clinically focused seminar will explain what makes the jaws so different and will review the salient features of radiographic lesions with an emphasis on interpretation of CT images. Participants will receive access to the popular BouquotToGo Dropbox collection of presentations, with more than 3,600 copyright-free images.

Objectives: Upon completion of this presentation, participants will understand the following:

• The variety of radiographic lesions found in alveolar bone

• The uniqueness of radiographic disorders of the jaws

• The appropriate diagnostic workup for jawbone abnormalities

• The differential diagnosis of specific radiographic appearances in the jaws

Robert R Seghi DDS MSProfessor and Chair, Division of General Practice and Materials Science The Ohio State University College of Dentistry

Dr. Robert Seghi is currently a Professor at the Ohio State University College of Dentistry and Chair of the Division of General Practice and Materials Science. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan College of Engineering and the College of Dentistry. He also has advanced training in Prosthodontics and Biomaterials.

Dr. Seghi maintained a private practice in Ann Arbor Michigan from 1978-1984 where he also taught part-time as a clinical instructor in removable prosthodontics. As an assistant professor at the UCLA School of Dentistry from 1984-1991, he helped found the UCLA Center for Esthetic Dentistry. He joined

the faculty at OSU in 1992 where he has directed fixed, removable and operative courses. He currently teaches in the area of complex restorative and esthetic techniques.

Dr. Seghi’s research interests have been in the areas of ceramics, composite and adhesive materials systems. He has been a Principal investigator and Co-investigator on several NIDCR funded research projects and his research has resulted in more than 100 scientific presentations and abstracts, over 60 scientific publications and one US patent in the area of nanocomposites. He has taught numerous continuing dental education courses both at UCLA and The Ohio State University primarily involving both direct and indirect conservative esthetic restorative techniques.

Managing Teeth for a Lifetime

Dentistry has never been more fun or more complicated or more confusing. Managing teeth for a lifetime often requires advanced knowledge of a number of different techniques. Meeting the expectations of most all of our patients is based on a clear communication of the service that you are providing and a clear understanding of the expectations that the patient has. Sometimes the best solution is not the longest lasting restoration. There is a place in the dental practice for either the long-term “intermediate” restoration or the intermediate-term “permanent” restoration. The presentations are designed to review what we know and what we really don’t know about some of the new materials and techniques that are available. Despite the lack of definitive evidence for many treatment outcomes, modern materials and techniques offer many new possibilities that have, at their foundation, the principal of conservation of tooth structure. When I look to the future I see amazing opportunities.

Objectives: Upon completion of this presentation, participants will understand the following:

• Dental Adhesives: Sticking with the facts! Are they getting better or just easier? Is there a new “gold” standard? Do we need more than one adhesive?

• Composites: Have they replaced amalgam? “Bulk fill”-Facts and Fictions? “Open-sandwich” – is that a legitimate technique? Salvaging terminal teeth with composite.

• Understanding All-Ceramics Full Contour Zirconia: the “new gold”? Do all our margins need to be on new tooth structure? Nano-ceramics - What is the deal with that?

• Emerging and Existing Technologies The Optical Impression-is it Optimal? On-Demand crown removal technique: Is that possible? The Digital workflow-how could it help?
