Residents, workers and visitorsto Joint Base Anacostia-Bollingmore than likely pass the retiredU.S. Air Force jet that is mountedjust inside the Arnold Gate. But doyou know what type of aircraft it is,and to what it is dedicated? Asidefrom pedestrians transiting thatarea of the base, few probably do.

The aircraft is an F-105D Thun-derchief. It was a supersonic fight-er-bomber employed by the U.S.Air Force from 1958 through 1984.It was capable of Mach 2 speed andwas used for the majority of strike-bombing missions during the earlyyears of the Vietnam War.

Thunderchief, more commonlyknown by its crews as “Thud,” wastailored to fly high-speed low-altitude penetration flights car-rying a single nuclear weapon. Itwas capable of carrying a greaterbomb load than the large strategicbombers of World War II such asthe B-17 Flying Fortress and B-24Liberator. During the VietnamWar it was responsible for deliv-ering heavy loads of conventionalbombs to military targets. It’s AN/APN-131 navigation radar andother advanced avionics made itall-weather capable.

The Thunderchief has historicaviation significance as the largest

single-seat, single-engine combataircraft in history, weighing ap-proximately 50,000 pounds, andcapable of carrying up to 14,000pounds of munitions.

The Thunderchief that standsprominently just inside the Ar-nold Gate is generally dedicated toall of the courageous airmen who

gave their lives in honor during theVietnam War. More specifically aplaque beside the aircraft reads,“This F-105D is dedicated withhonor and respect to those combatpilots whose courage and braveryunder fire during the SoutheastAsia Conflict resulted in the awardof the Air Force Cross - the Na-

tion’s Second Highest Award forValor.” It also names the followingrecipients:
