    Jominy End-Quench 2.02Mike Meier, December 31, 2003

Jominy is a handy program for people conducting Jominy end-quench hardenability measurements. It employs the routines given in ASTM A 255 to compute the Jominy curve for steels and it allows

one to enter measured data and plot it on the same graph as the calculated hardness values.

FeaturesThe primary features of Jominy are: Allows one to specify the nominal composition of the steel Calculates the hardenability curve Calculates the ideal diameter Calculates the initial hardness Calculates the hardness of 50% martensite Allows one to enter measured hardness values Plots the calculated and measured hardness values Prints the data and graph

In addition, you can zoom in (drag with the left mouse button) and out (click the right mouse button)on the graph. If you double-click the graph Jominy will hide the controls and resize the graph sothat is completely fills the form. Also, you can export the graph as a Windows enhanced metafile(*.emf).

DisclaimerThis software and manual are provided as is and without warranties as to performance. Whileconsiderable effort have been made to ensure its accuracy the user must verify that it meets therequirements for all intended applications.

DistributionEducational Users: Writing Jominy provided me with an opportunity to develop myDelphi/Windows programming abilities and to make something I could give to the students in mylaboratory courses. I am happy to offer it for free to non-profit educational users, including students,

    staff and faculty.

Commercial Users: Private and commercial users pay $50 for each copy of this program. Thisprogram represents about 2 months of midnight engineering, including many early mornings, andan investment in a number of programming tools and many Windows and Delphi-programmingbooks.

RegistrationPlease register this software. To register simply fill out the registration form and mail or email itto me at the address given below. Your registration will give me a better idea of who is using this

program. I will not share your personal information with anyone.

FilesThe following files are included with this program:1. Jominy End-Quench 2.02.exe The program

    2. Jominy End-Quench 2.02.pdf Documentation (This document)3. Registration Form.pdf Registration form4. *.jdf Sample data files

InstallationTo install Jominy simply copy the program and data files to a directory of your choice and copy theini file to the Windows directory. Create a shortcut and put it in the Materials Science section of theprograms branch of your START menu.

Next VersionNew features planned for the next version of Jominy are:

    1. Ability to specify minimum, maximum and nominal compositions of the steel.2. Ability to enter four sets of measured hardness values, one for each flat on the Jominy

specimen.3. Statistical analysis of the measured values and comparisons to the calculated curves.4. Database of the compositions and hardenability bands of all of the steels in ASTM 304. This

database will also include the compositions of many other steels and it will allow you to addadditional compositions and hardenability bands.

    5. Ability to change graph options such as line and area colors, number of major and minordivisions and the use of splines to draw a line through the calculated and measured data.

    6. Exporting the data as ACSII text and as Microsoft Excel and Corel Quattro Pro spreadsheetfiles.

    7. Ability to acquire data directly from the hardness tester.8. Extensive help file.9. Support for metric units.10. An installation utility which will register the jdf extension, making it possible to start Jominy

and load the data by double-clicking the data file's icon.

FeedbackI am interested in hearing from people, particularly students and instructors, who use this program. Please email me at: [email protected] or mail me at:

Using the ProgramJominy is very easy to use. The major steps involved in creating and working with a new projectare:

    1. Start the program

    2. Create a new project3. Enter data for the steel, the heat treatment and the hardness tester4. Enter the measured hardness values5. Examine the graph and the calculated results6. Print the project

Description of FeaturesJominy uses Windows MDI (multiple-document interface) feature to let you work with more thanone project at a time. Jominy can have up to 50 projects open at one time and options under theFilemenu also let you save, close and print one or all open projects. The figure below shows a screenshow of Jominy which has four projects open. These project forms can be moved, resized, tiles, cascaded, etc. In addition, the background color can be changed.

New Project FormTo start a new project simply selectNew from theFile menu. The form shown in the figure belowwill appear and details regarding the sample and its heat treatment, and the hardness tester can beentered. When done click the OK button and this form will be replaced by at project form shownin figures 3-6.

steel and the hardness tester can be entered.

Project FormFigures 3-6 show a typical project forms. The left side of the form is a four-page tabbed notebookwhich lets you view the session details, enter the composition of the steel, enter the hardness valuesand view the final results. The right side shows a graph of the measured and calculated hardnessvalues as a function of Jominy distance. This graph can be resized to fill the whole project form,

zoomed in and out. When the cursor is over the graph its x and y coordinates will be displayed inthe status bar at the bottom of the main form.

Session Figure 3 shows the session page of a typical project. This page contains informationentered into theNew Projectform. To change any of this information select Session Parametersfrom theEditmenu.

Composition Figure 4 shows the Composition page of a typical project. The composition of thesteel can be entered on this page. These entries are restricted to the range limits shown to the rightof each edit box. Check the box near the bottom if the steel contains boron. Each time thecomposition is changed the Jominy curve will be recalculated and updated.

Data - Figure 5 shows theData page of a typical project. The Jominy distance, calculated hardnessvalues are displayed in the first three columns of the grid. Measured hardness readings can beentered in the right-most column of this grid. As each value is entered its data point will appear onthe graph.

Results The results page lists the calculated initial hardness and ideal diameter and the hardnesswhere the microstructure contains 50% martensite. It also contains fields where the measured valuesand comments can be entered.

Graph The graph in the project form shows the measured (blue squares) and calculated (red line)hardness values as a function of Jominy distance. Scaling of the hardness axis goes down to 0 HRC,lower than the normal 20 HRC limit, since often the calculated and the measured value can be in thisrange.

The appearance of the graph can be changed. The following options are available:

Full Size To enlarge the graph so that it fills the whole form simply double-click it.

Normal Size To restore the graph to its normal size simply double-click it a second time.

Zoom In To zoom in on an area of the graph just left-click the mouse and drag the cursor overthe area.

Zoom Out To zoom out to the original scaling just right-click anywhere on the graph.

Figure 7 Double-click the graph to enlarge it to the size of the form. Double-click it again to

restore it to its original size.

SavingTo save the selected project select Save from theFile menu. To save all open projects select SaveAll.

Jominy projects can only be saved as Jominy data files (*.jdf). This file format is actually an ASCII

file formatted as a standard Windows ini file. Any text editor can be used to edit this file, or it caneasily be imported into spreadsheets or word processors.

ExportingThe graph can be exported as a Windows enhanced metafile (*.emf). While many programs canimport this type of file, the results may disappointing due to issues which have nothing to do withJominy. You may find that screen-shots work better.

ClosingThe Close and Close Alloptions under theFile menu will let you close the selected project or allopen projects.

PrintingA printout of one or all projects can be obtained by selectionPrintorPrint Allfrom theFile menu. This printout includes all of the data, compositions, calculated results and the graph. The next pageshows a typical printout.

    Capturing a Screen Shot

To capture and save an image of the graph resize the project form as desired (more pixels will

produce a sharper image) and press CTRL-PRT SCRN (Control-Print Screen). Using an imageediting program such as Microsoft Paint or Adobe Photoshop open a new image then paste(usually CTRL-V) the screen-shot into the blank image. Crop the image as desired and save theimage or cut (usually CTRL-C) and paste it into your document.
