CalibrateANSI/ISA–S51.1–1979 (R1993)
Calibrate: To ascertain outputs of a device corresponding to a series of values of the quantity which the device is to measure, receive, or transmit. Data so obtained are used to:
1) determine the locations at which scale graduations are to be placed;
2) adjust the output, to bring it to the desired value, within a specified tolerance;
3) ascertain the error by comparing the device output reading against a standard.

Calibration- What does it mean?
1. Determine the locations at which scale graduations are to be placed;
– Set the 4 mA and 20 mA points (range)– Scaling/ranging can be done remotely without applying input– Scale/range not applicable to most fieldbus transmitters
2. Adjust the output, to bring it to the desired value, within a specified tolerance;
– Trim the output current– Need to connect a multimeter– Not applicable to fieldbus
3. Ascertain the error by comparing the device output reading against a standard.
– Trim the sensor reading– Need to apply input (e.g. equalize and vent manifold to zero)– Is applicable to fieldbus

Calibration for Fieldbus
•Sensor Trim– If measurement reading is
wrong it must be corrected• E.g. correct for mounting position
– From transducer block– Need to apply input
• Done in the field
• Configure Range/Scale Setting
–Zero and Span• In PID block (valve or
controller)• In AI block for inferential
measurements such as DP flow and DP level
• Some transmitters may need range to operate
• Cancel wet-leg etc.–Set the portion (range/scale) between sensor limits which is of interest for application
–In function block–Just setting a value

Conclusion
• You don’t have to go to the field as often– Diagnostics and configuration done remotely
• You still need to go to the field sometimes• Working in the field is easier than in the past• Specialized tools and solutions for fieldbus are
available• Fieldbus is not difficult
