Jonathan Sarosiek, Director of Tennis Jonathan Sarosiek is USPTA and PTR certified at the highest level by each organization. He directs all aspects of the tennis department at Boar’s Head Sports Club. Prior to Boar’s Head, Jon worked at Wintergreen Resort for 11 years with six years as the resort’s Director of Tennis. At Wintergreen, Jon elevated the quality of the teaching and teaching staff, which was ranked as high as number two in the country and was perennially rated as a top 20 tennis resorts destination in the world by TennisResortsOnline.com. Under Jon’s direction, Wintergreen Resort was a rated as a top 10 tennis camp in the world by TennisResortsOnline.com, and Tennis Magazine consistently ranked Wintergreen as a top 50 tennis resort in the country. As a top ranked junior player in Wisconsin, Jon was recruited to play Division I collegiate tennis at the University of Montana. Afterward, he served as the Assistant Men’s Tennis Coach at Division III Methodist College in North Carolina, where the team finished in the top 30 in the country each year. Jon also trains one of the highest ranked Special Olympics tennis players in the world. Jonathan Sarosiek is USPTA and PTR certified at the highest level by each organization. He directs all aspects of the tennis department at Boar’s Head Sports Club. Troy Porco, Director of Junior Tennis

Troy is responsible for the oversight of the junior program and also provides private and group instruction to members and guests of all ages and ability levels. Troy has extensive experience working with junior and adult players, as well as running tennis camps for these groups at all levels. Prior to Boar’s Head, Troy was with the University of Virginia Women’s Tennis program for 12 years, most recently serving five years as the Associate Head Coach and for seven years as the Assistant Women’s Tennis Coach. In Troy’s tenure, Virginia’s program saw the most successful 12-year stretch in the history of UVA Women’s Tennis. Virginia’s team qualified for the NCAA Team

Tournament 10 out of 12 years and won two ACC tournament titles, as Troy coached two NCAA Singles Champions and numerous ITA All-Americans, helping to elevate the UVA program to national prominence. In 2014, Troy was named ITA National Assistant Coach of the Year.

Prior to UVA, Troy was the Head Women’s Tennis Coach at Auburn University for eight years. Prior to coaching, Troy played collegiately at the Florida International University.

Tournament Director: Ron Manilla

As a teaching professional with more than 30 years of experience, Ron Manilla has made a tremendous impact on the tennis communities at Boar’s Head Sports Club and in the Charlottesville Area. Through tennis, Ron has touched the lives of many players around Charlottesville, including his own children, leading to honors and accolades including: 2002 PTR Virginia Member of the Year, and, 2008 USTA Virginia Family of the Year in 2008. In February of 2010, Ron received the Professional Tennis Registry’s highest honor, Master Professional. He is one of only 31 in the world to receive this designation. Ron’s current priority is the direction of tennis tournaments at

BHSC, including the Boyd Tinsley Clay Court Classic, the Charlottesville Men’s Pro Challenger, Special Olympics “Xperience, “ and numerous USTA junior tournaments. Ron is a member of the Head/Penn Advisory Staff and president of the Charlottesville Area Tennis Association.

Teaching Professionals Betsy Nugent

Betsy has been teaching tennis in the Charlottesville area for more than 10 years. Her experience at Boar’s Head Sports Club includes teaching private lessons and adult and junior clinics, as well as assisting with in-house leagues and tennis events. Betsy has also been active in coordinating USTA leagues. She has a special interest in promoting tennis in the Charlottesville-Albemarle community and has assisted in implementing the QuickStart and high school development programs for Albemarle County. Her passion for teaching juniors has kept her in good stead as she has coached girl’s high school teams both at Western Albemarle and at Saint Anne’s-Belfield for the

past 11 years. Betsy is a certified USPTR instructor and competes at the 4.5 level in the Charlottesville community.

Carlos Romero

Carlos’ coaching career began 10 years ago at the Amarillo Tennis Center where he flourished as a tennis coach and mentor for kids. Next, he became head coach at the Poland Swim and Tennis Club in Youngstown, Ohio. Then, Carlos moved to Florida and worked under the direction of world renowned Tennis Coach Gabe Jaramillo at the Club Med Tennis Academy. The Academy helped enhance Carlos’ knowledge and skills in teaching high-performance tennis and molded him into the coach he is today. Whether you’re picking up a racquet for the first time or looking for a tennis teaching professional to work with high-performance juniors and adults, Carlos is an excellent

choice. Once you meet Carlos you will quickly recognize the energy and passion he has for the sport. He believes that tennis will not only foster athleticism, but will also help develop decision making skills for life.

Carlos, originally from the Dominican Republic, resides in the City of Charlottesville with his wife and daughter, and we’re delighted to have him as part of the Boar’s Head tennis program.

George Elias

George’s passion for the game and his 20 years of experience as a teaching pro in Northern Virginia have served him well. He was the head pro at Wintergreen Resort and worked at Westwood Country Club and the Four Seasons Tennis Club. While at the Four Seasons, George served with Bob Pass in guiding a successful national caliber junior program that produced several notable NCAA Division I players. At Westwood Country Club, he guided all aspects of club tennis, including a successful USTA ladies 3.5 team that competed at districts 9 out of 10 years. George is a thorough and thoughtful teacher who helps you improve your game.

George played college tennis at Birmingham Southern College.

Robyn Russell

Robyn has spent more than 30 years coaching and teaching the game of tennis. As a college coach, Robyn guided Young Harris College in Georgia for 10 years. Her team qualified for nationals 9 out of 10 years, won five regional titles and earned five Coach of the Year honors. In the club environment, Robyn has spent a great deal of time guiding adult players on ALTA and USTA league teams. In the past Robyn taught at the Atlanta County Club as well as a previous stint at BHSC from 1987-1990. Robyn is certified both by the USPTA and USPTR. She played college tennis at James Madison University and is nationally ranked in the top 25 in the singles division of USTA women’s senior tennis. Robyn continues to compete around the nation.

Mitchell Frank

As a two-time NCAA Champion and three-time All American at the top ranked University of Virginia men’s tennis program, Mitchell Frank brings a host of skillsets and is ready to pass along his top playing advice to our Boar’s Head clientele. Alongside his All American status, Mitchell was the number one ranked college tennis player in the nation and one of four players to ever win the ITA All Americans and National Indoors in the same season. Mitchell’s tennis success started well before his UVA days. He’s a former top five junior player in the world and Kalamazoo 18s and an Orange Bowl finalist. After his UVA career he moved on in the tennis world to capture

two singles futures on the ITF men’s pro circuit.
