Regional Planning

These vignettes and map were completed for the

Georgia Regional Planning Commission as part of a

publicity campaign for a 39 mile long rails to trails

project. The vignettes are part of a large poster that

was created for the participating towns to garner sup-

port from their local contingencies.

The historic Crawford Train Depot is an important architectural icon and an asset to the City of Crawford. Planning an efficient and dynamic use of the grounds surrounding The Depot will serve to heighten public interest in the project and improve the character of downtown Crawford. A strong exterior presence will be an attraction to local citizens as well as tourists alike. Creating a more useful public space for pedestrians and cyclists are key in making cities more vibrant and active.

The Scope:* Partially close N. Elm Street to automobiles to create a pedestrian promenade and greenway with benches.

* Remove asphault under raised beds in the promenade to ensure proper drainage.

* Create a paved walkway in line with the historic rail bed as the trail head for 'Rails to Trails'.

* Create an area adjacent to the 'Rails to Trails' with bike racks and a water fountain.

* Install sidewalks and pedestrian street crossings around the perimeter of The Depot to encourage pedestrian traffic in and out of surrounding neighborhoods. * Leave existing allée of trees undisturbed to maintain health of the trees.

* Plant 'street trees' to expand the shade cover.

* Plant large beds using a consistant 'species palette' to create a unified campus.

* Install light standards for nightime safety and visibility.

* Build a stage/flexible use structure in the north west corner of the property for concerts and functions to expand the present use.

* Remove the shed roof addition from The Depot to return the structure more closely back to its original form.

Upon recommendation from the USDA Forestry Service and the Georgia Forestry Commission we have concluded that minimizing disturbance to the willow oaks that comprise the allée of trees is important to their long term health. Further diturbance to the trees root zones will accelerate their decline. We have proposed moving activities from the center of the allée to the newly created pedestrian promenade directly adjacent on N. Elm Street.

Pasqual's Restaurant & Motor Hotel

EXISTING

PROPOSED

GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS: Retain and repair original materials unless severely deteriorated. Re-placement material is to match original in composition, appearance, and placement. Any substrate material is to match original in function and appearance. Clean and prepare all surfaces to be painted. Do not sand-blast masonry, stucco, wood, glass, or metal to clean surfaces. Always utilize test patches for any restoration methods and obtain approval of techniques, material

removal or replacement from all historic preservation authorities involved with the project before execution. Inspect for and re-point poor mortar joints. Do not add windows or openings if none originally existed. When attaching metal applications such as new cornices, flashing, or drain pipes, always use proper fasteners and hardware for appropriate metal-to-metal contact to avoid future deterioration of these elements. Before any further restoration work is completed secure build-

ing from water penetration at roof, foundation, eaves, gutter joints, and miscellaneous openings.PAINT PREPARATION: Remove dirt, oil, grease, chalk, vegetation, efflorescence, and other contami-nants. Scrape loose paint down to the nearest adher-ing layer. Wash surface with detergent and thoroughly flush with hose, especially any protected areas where dirt and mildew develop and interfere with adhe-sion. Use low-pressure water only. Surfaces should

be thoroughly dry. Dull glossy surfaces by sanding. Inspect putty/caulking and replace/fill as needed. Front and back- prime any painted wood or metal applications which will be attached to the façade.Re-cover any paint with the same type (oil on oil, latex on latex). Metal must be painted with oil-based paint or appropriate primer - water in latex will rust metal.

Pasqual's Restaurant & Motor Hotel is a classic mid-century modern structure with significant national history. Dur-ing the 1960's the restaurant served as a meeting place for key civil rights leaders including Martin Luther King Jr. The hotel lounge La Carousel hosted many legendary jazz and soul acts while serving as a landmark community business.

-Repair and replace the existing style of storefront windows as needed.-Replace signage according to historical documentation.

Surface MountedMetal Letters

Surface mounted cut metal letters are a good choice to update the look of the signage. We recommend cut metal letters in either a natural satin aluminum or clear polished anodized aluminum. Care should be taken during mounting to minimize damage to the upper facade.

GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS: Retain and repair original materials unless severely deterio-rated. Replacement material is to match original in composition, appearance, and placement. Any substrate material is to match original in func-tion and appearance. Do not sandblast masonry,

The Overpass settlement sits at the convergence of three right-of-ways: a main road, a railroad, and a greenway. Two bridges provide adequate shelter for habitation while the greenway provides essential cover and water. These circumstances sustain a large permanent population.

*ASLA Honor Award

Urban Outreach Studio: Informal Athens is the inaugural publication of an independent graduate studio, established by the authors, that engages unorthodox urban issues such as homelessness, marginalized communities and informal settlements. This project specifically deals with the informal communities of Athens, Georgia. Through research, analysis and communication this publication addresses this complex urban issue using the tools and perspectives of landscape architecture. This publication is based upon academic and field research and employs photographs, maps, and graphic data to tease out principles and patterns in order to establish a foundation of further work with Athens’ informal settlements. This publication asks the question : What does it mean to be part of a diverse urban community?

ABSTRACT

Examining the ways that humans perceive their urban

environment and how those perceptions inform each

individual’s aesthetic judgments, landscape architects can

better understand how to encourage and invite pedestrian

experience through the physical shaping of the city. The

review of scholarly literature and case studies yields

aesthetic principles that can be utilized by landscape

architects to encourage participation of cities through

walking, and thereby focus interventions in the urban

environment on pedestrian experience.
