Green Technologies and Eco-Efficient Alternatives for Cranes and Operations at Port Container Terminals

GREENCRANES is a project co-financed by the European Commission through the Trans-European Transport Network with theparticipation of the ports of Valencia (Spain), Livorno (Italy) and Koper (Slovenia), as well as port machinery manufacturers,energy service providers and R&D centres.

The main objective of the project isto facilitate the transition of theport industry towards a lowpolluting and GHG emissionoperating model.

Specific Objectives:• Demonstrate the financial, technical and environmental feasibility for the implementation of eco-efficient alternatives based

on the use of alternative fuels (liquefied natural gas) and efficient energy consumption management models.• Test in real operating environments those solutions with the greatest potential for rapid implementation in European

container terminals.

Smart, Energy Efficient and Adaptive Port Terminals

SEAterminals is a project co-financed by the European Commission through the Trans-European Transport Network with theparticipation of the ports of Valencia (Spain), Livorno (Italy), Baltic Ports Organization, Italian Ministry of Transport, NoatumContainer terminal , etc.

The primary objective of the SEA TERMINALS project is to fast-track the transition of the port industry towards efficientoperational models by integrating the energy variable as a key factor to improving PCTs. The project is based up the lessonslearned from the GREENCRANES project, the results of which show that the efficient management of energy consumption andthe use of alternative fuels is not only feasible but also generates major benefits at all levels of the PCTs.

The objective of the project is to develop a safe and efficient integrated logistics chain for the supply of liquefied natural gas, LNG, (small scale andbunkering) for use as a transport fuel, and especially for shipping, in the Iberian Peninsula.

CORE LNGas hive contributes to the decarbonization of the Mediterranean and Atlantic corridors and represents a step towards EU goals ofreducing emissions, promoting clean energy for transport and caring for the environment. LNG is one of the most environmentally-friendly of allfuels, generating around 30% less CO2 than traditional petroleum-based fuels. It also helps reduce emissions of sulphur oxides (SOx) andparticulate matter (PM), and nitrogen oxides (NOx). This helps ensure compliance with environmental regulations, by improving air quality in portenvironments.

Pilot projects (investment)

• Adaptation of the infrastructures of all regasification plants for

small-scale supply services and/or fuel supply services.

• Development of LNG distribution barges in Barcelona and

northern Spain

• Use of LNG as fuel in tugboats, port cranes and land transport

Sustainable LNG Operations for Ports and Shipping – Innovative Pilot Actions

LNG technologies and Innovation for maritime transport for the promotion of sustainability, multimodality and the efficiency of the network

GAINN4MOS aims to improve the Motorways of the Sea network in 6 Member States (Spain, France, Croatia, Italy,Portugal and Slovenia) by carrying out engineering studies on ship retrofitting and/or newbuildings, port LNGinfrastructures, bunkering stations and a large set of pilot projects.

GAINN4MOS includes 14 detailed engineering studies on LNG infrastructures and bunkering stations and shipretrofitting and / or newbuilding of vessels and 11 prototypes (4 LNG retrofitted prototype vessels and 7 LNG bunkeringstations at core ports).

GAINN4SHIP INNOVATION aims to retrofit a large high-speed craft (HSC) ropax vessel so that it will be fuelled by a mixof LNG and diesel. The technological solutions that will be applied to the HSC ropax vessel will prove that using LNG asmarine fuel for the HSC fleet is possible. The pilot will be the first case in the world of a retrofitted HSC ropax vessel thatmaintains all the features needed in the liner service where the ship is deployed whilst increasing service quality.

SEA TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT VALIDATION PROJECT

STM´s aim is to create a safer, more efficient and environmentally friendly maritime sector. The goals for full deployment of STM by year 2030 in relation to year 2015 are the following:

• Safety: 50% reduction of accidents.

• Efficiency: 10% reduction in voyage costs and 30% reduction in waiting

time for berthing

• Environment: 7% lower fuel consumption and 7% lower green house

gas emissions.
