We dedicate the 2012/2013 SeaSon to the memory of ellen a. Groff

At right is pictured one of the angels that flanks the Fulton’s proscenium above you. In every theatre there are individuals whose dedication of resources and generosity of spirit make it possible for us to create and enjoy the art and craft of live theatre. To those of us who work in the theatre, they are often referred to as angels.

We recently lost one such dear friend.

And so we dedicate this—and every performance in the 2012/2013 Season— to the loving memory of our friend Ellen A. Groff.

May “flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.” —Act V, scene ii, Shakespeare’s Hamlet

Dear Friends,

Thank you for helping us to close out this remarkable, historic 160th Anniversary Season on such a high note. We thought that Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat would make for a fitting finale to this celebratory season and we hope you agree.

The fun continues this summer as our Fulton Academy of Theatre summer camps fill every nook and cranny of the theatre (and Education building next door) with students eager to learn the art and craft of live theatre. There are still openings in some of the camps, but they are filling quickly. Please visit the website for more info and online registration.

Also this summer, we’ll be reinstituting a series of our ever-popular backstage tours. The tours are a great opportunity to learn about the rich history of the Fulton and to get a sneak peek into the process of how we create our productions today. A schedule of tour times can be found on our website (www.thefulton.org).

We are also pleased to announce that the Mark Stuart Dance Theatre, which dazzled the crowd at the Fulton Follies last month, will be coming back on September 28th and 29th to share with us their original production Standard Time before it heads to Broadway. More details will be announced soon, so stay tuned!

Finally, we are looking forward to an electrifying 2013/2014 Season. We now have four, five and six show Ticket Packages that really are the best deal in town. We hope you’ll join our growing family of season ticket holders. It’s a season you won’t want to miss.

A Message from the Fulton Leadership

About the Fulton GuildSince 1979, The Fulton Opera House Guild, an all volunteer organization, has worked to promote and support the Fulton Opera House Foundation. Though our activities are many, our main source of financial support for the Fulton is by way of our volunteers, who serve Fulton patrons at the lobby bar and refreshment stands. We offer beverages and snacks before the performance and at intermission. All monies earned are presented to the Foundation.

Want to join the Fulton Guild next season? Please see one of our Guild members at the refreshment stand for an application or additional information. And to learn more about the Fulton’s rich history, consider purchasing our booklet, “A Brief History of The Fulton Theatre,” available at our refreshment stand.

tim rice (Joseph—Lyricist) was born in 1944. He began song writing in 1965 in which year the first song he wrote That’s My Story (tune as well as words) was recorded by a rock group called the Nightshift whose career never recovered. That same year he met fellow budding songwriter Andrew Lloyd Webber whose musical ambitions were in theatre rather than rock or pop. They teamed up and wrote four musicals together from 1965–1978. The first, The Likes of Us (1965-6) was performed for the first time in 2005 and became available on CD just 40 years after its creation. The other three, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (1968), Jesus Christ Superstar (1969–71) and Evita (1976–78) were more immediate successes. Feeling certain that they

could never top this lot, the pair went their separate ways in the early eighties, whereupon ALW immediately topped that lot with Cats. Tim Rice then wrote Blondel (1983), a mediaeval romp, with Stephen Oliver, which ran a mere year in London. (It was last revived at the Pleasance, Islington, in late 2006.) This was followed in 1986 by Chess, in collaboration with ABBA’s Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson. Chess had a healthy run in the West End but flopped on Broadway in 1988, the New York Times bloke (since replaced) being particularly forceful in his disapproval. In 1989 Tim translated the famous French musical Starmania (by Michel Berger and Luc Plamondon) into English, which merely resulted in a hit album—in France. In the nineties he worked primarily and happily with the Disney empire, contributing lyrics to the movies Aladdin (music Alan Menken) and The Lion King, (music Elton John and Hans Zimmer) and to the stage shows Beauty and the Beast (Alan Menken), The Lion King and Aida (both Sir Elton). Between Disney commitments he wrote the words for Sir Cliff Richard’s theatrical blockbuster Heathcliff (music John Farrar), which toured the UK in 1995–96. For Dreamworks, he and Sir Elton joined forces yet again to write the score for the 2000 animated film The Road to El Dorado. Tim’s recent work has included lyrics for a forthcoming film of the timeless Nutcracker (music by Tchaikovsky) and for the late Sir Malcolm Arnold’s famous Peterloo oratorio. He is reworking an operatic musical he has written with Alan Menken (King David)—most recently staged at New York University in November 2008. In 2008 he produced and presented a new concert version of Chess at London’s Royal Albert Hall starring

Who’s WhoJosh Groban, Idina Menzel and Adam Pascal. A CD and DVD of this show was issued worldwide in 2009. Tim has also just finished the first draft of a brand new theatrical idea, which may or may not see the light of day. He is writing and presenting a major new radio series for BBC Radio 2 in 2009/10. He has won a variety of awards, mainly for the wrong things, or for simply turning up. These include 3 Oscars, 4 Tonys, 5 or 6 Grammys and a dozen Ivor Novellos. He was awarded a star on Hollywood Boulevard’s Walk of Fame in November 2008. He is a Trustee (former President) of the Marylebone Cricket Club and chairman of the UK charitable Foundation for Sport and the Arts. Who’s WhoAAron A. young (Managing Director) Aaron joined the Fulton team in 2003. After several years in shopping center marketing, Aaron decided to devote his career to furthering the careers of artists in order to break the cycle of belief that the arts are a nice hobby but not a worthwhile profession. For six seasons, he directed the marketing and management of the Sundance Film Festival and Sundance Theatre, both programs of Robert Redford’s Sundance Institute. Aaron has also served as general manager for the Missouri Repertory Theatre and marketing and corporate development manager for Kansas City’s historic Folly Theatre. A magna cum laude graduate of Brigham Young University and formerly a professional actor, singer, and pianist, Aaron now spends his free time enjoying the pursuits of his wife and daughters, serving at church, and occasionally knitting a new pair of socks. He is very pleased that the Fulton is able to provide professional wages and benefits to more than 250 artists and arts administrators every year.

Actors’ equity AssociAtion Founded in 1913, Actors’ Equity Association (AEA) represents more than 49,000 actors and stage managers in the U.S. AEA’s mission is to advance, promote and foster the art of live theatre as an essential component of our society. AEA negotiates wages and working conditions, providing a wide range of benefits, including health and pension plans for its members. AEA is a member of the AFL-CIO, and is affiliated with the FIA, an international association of performing arts unions. AEA and the League of Resident Theatres (LORT), a national association of non-profit regional theatres, negotiated our first contract in 1966. Our goal is to foster the artistic life of both the regional non-profit theatre, and the actors who work in that theatre, by establishing methods of operation to which the individual theatres and actors subscribe in a collective and mutually beneficial relationship. Together, we are dedicated to upholding the highest artistic standards in our community.
