Why do DDP? Workload Problems encountered Advantages and disadvantages of DDP Why I enjoyed and regretted doing DDP Q&A
Overview
Broaden knowledge, learn about both disciplines
Do you really need to do 2 degrees to learn about both disciplines?
Better employability? Not necessarily in today’s working environment
Challenge yourself
Passion for both subjects Or unsure of which one would suit you
Why do DDP?
Economics
2 hr lectures, 1 hr tutorial per week
Engineering 2 x 2 hr lectures, 1 hr tutorial per week 3 hr labs, only for some modules Countless hours of project meetings
Typically, 20-24MC workload per semester
Spend more time working compared to single degree? Nope
Workload
No dedicated system to easily manage DDP
curriculum Single degree has portal that clearly states what
modules have yet to be completed However, staff are nice and helpful, able to advise
Sometimes curriculum can be confusing What can be double counted? SEP mapping issues
Integrated thesis vs Separate thesis
Problems Encountered
Broad perspective
Understand both engineering and economics
Sometimes easier to work on projects The two disciplines seldom mix Profs from one discipline may not know about concepts in the
other discipline Can appear smart
Economics math much simpler than Engineering Some modules become that much easier Macroeconomics, Financial Economics, etc.
Just 1 more year for extra degree Worth it?
Advantages of DDP
Taxing to do two theses
1 extra year Worth it? Not so sure considering everyone else
has 1-2 working years experience by graduation
No wage premium after graduation
Disadvantages of DDP
Friends
Learned a lot academically Broad perspective on many issues
5 years instead of 4 Studying better than working most of the time
Why I Enjoyed DDP
