”OLD FASHION WRITING BUREAU” BY BENNY FINOCCHIARO

Tonight we present another beautiful creation by master craftsman Benny Finocchiaro, specifically for The Starlight Foundation.

The desk has taken approximately six months from inception to finished project from designing to sourcing the materials used to produce this incredible piece of furniture!

The materials used are:

The timber is mahogany and American cherry, green leather for the writing part of the desk, Paspaley mother of pearl shell inserted in the front panel door and brass lock.

There are NO nails used, dovetail joints are used throughout the project so that the top part of the bureau could be dismantled and taken apart for easy transport if one is moving interstate. The desk is dovetailed and glued, screws used where the leather panel is inserted into the desk. There are screws in the back panel of the bureau.

Secret drawers are incorporated and extensive carvings are also part of the design. The drawer knobs have been manually made on the lathe. The whole desk has been sprayed inside and out with two pack automotive clear varnish several times.

A special thank you to Steve Toohey from Trumans Upholstery for donating the leather, Eugene Scaturchio and William Finocchiaro for helping to assemble the Bureau and Hugh Bradley for helping out at the last minute in the making of the drawer knobs on the lathe.

”SKIN” PAINTING BY LOCAL TALENT JOSHUA BONSON

Born-and-bred Darwin artist Joshua Bonson, is one of the Northern Territory’s most exciting young emerging talents. At only 28 he has won a number of prestigious awards and had several works represented in the country’s top art awards.

For two years running, Joshua was the youngest-ever finalist in the prestigious Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Award and at 22, he won the Togart Contemporary Art Award. In 2013 Joshua was a finalist in the 30th NATSIAA Award, The City of Albany Art Prize and Winner of the Top End NAIDOC artist of the year.

JOSHUA BONSON

Skin JB0579 157cm high x 120cm wide, Synthetic polymer paint on canvas $12,000

Joshua Bonson is a painter who works in a highly textured, but largely monochromatic style, which is a form of abstract expressionism. He recreates the scales of a saltwater crocodile, which is his totem. The armoured skin of the reptile is shown by the built-up serrations of paint; reading as a close-up of a reptile’s skin, as a landscape both seen from a distance and up close with details of rocks and sand.

“Skin is a celebration of my family's totem, The Saltwater Crocodile and my personal view of the world. Even though I live in the Northern Territory, part of my heritage comes from the Torres Strait and creating this work is my way of trying to represent my skins affiliations and my place there.”

”Skin is a celebration of my family’s totem The Saltwater Crocodile and our landscape. Even though I live in the Northern Territory, part of my heritage comes from the Torres Strait and creating this work represents my skins affiliations and my place there, while paying homage to my heritage”.Joshua Bonson

In 2014 Joshua held his first solo exhibition internationally and was awarded the Young Achievers Award NT; Artist of the Year. In 2015, Joshua received a scholarship at Bundanon Trust Artists Retreat, NSW, provided by Ervin Vidor, Director of the Toga Group.

Northern TerritoryStarlight in the

In 2008, only three Captain Starlights came from Planet Starlight every day to the Northern Territory. They visited the Royal Darwin Hospital and a small number of major regional centres.

Today, nine Captain Starlights visit over 30 different regional hospitals and healthcare centres across the Top End and Central Australia.

In 2016, Starlight reached over 5,496 children and young people.

Starlight’s Healthier Futures Initiative

In 2013, Starlight joined forces with health professionals to help kids in remote Indigenous communities, with Captain Starlight bringing joy and laughter to Indigenous kids’ clinics. By engaging kids through song, dance and storytelling, Starlight has helped improve health clinic attendance and makes going to the clinic a fun and positive experience!

Darwin Starlight Express Room

In September 2016, the Northern Territory’s very first Starlight Express Room was open to families! The Starlight Express Room is a fun-filled haven where families can come and have a break from the hospital experience. The room has state of the art AV and gaming equipment, a dedicated art and craft space and most importantly… our very own superhero, Captain Starlight!
