Hello TxSSAMT!

I t has been a fabulous 2018 so far. We had a great meeting in McKinney hosted by Rocella Carlysle. There

were 15 lectures that were technical and career oriented that were tailored to lab techs and medical assistants. The social boasted a flamboyant Cinco de Mayo flair with delicious street tacos and roasted corn. We celebrated lab week by handing out some goodies to out MT/MLT members. Linda Raven provided us with a sentimental and informative look at our AMT past.

The National Convention in Washington, DC was a amazing experience. A few of our TxSSAMT members were recognized for their achievements at a wonderful banquet celebrating many achievements. Out of 5 recipients, Art Contino and Taffy Durfee were both presented with the Going the Extra Mile (GEM) award. Taffy Durfee was also awarded the Exceptional Merit Award. I was humbled to accept the State Honor Roll award on behalf of TxSSAMT. Attending the National Convention is a fun way to earn CEU’s in the general and break-out sessions while making memories with old and new friends. There were many presentations for leadership and state growth. It is also a helpful experience to meet everyone on the National Board of Directors and the AMT office staff.

A Message from the PRESIDENT

Kat Fryar

For Employment Information

please check out the AMT Career Connection

linked on the AMT website.

The Fall Conference will be hosted by Alfonso Clemmings in San Antonio at the San Antonio Zoo on October 12-13, 2018. There are many technical lectures that I hope you all will enjoy.

We are attempting to shake things up in a way. We need more member involvement so we are hosted the Fall conference at the zoo with an inexpensive neighboring hotel. We hope this atmosphere rids us of the stuffy classroom effect and into a relaxed fun experience. The social will be hosted at the zoo! Who wouldn't want to share a beer with friends and watch the giraffes?!

The Spring 2019 conference is going to be aboard the Carnival Valor on March 28-April 1, 2019. We will have 8 lectures on the sea days that include progeria, cancer from a patient’s perspective, pathology and laboratory disease and personality types.

The Fall 2019 conference will be held in Houston, Texas by Drannette Murray. Keep and eye out for those details on the website.

Thanks and hope to see you at one of the meetings!

I sure hope that everyone enjoyed the sights and sounds of Washington DC as well as the program that AMT arranged

for everyone. We had a great turnout for this conference with over 415 in attendance. The fireworks display during July 4th celebration was amazing. Our next national meeting will be held in Chicago, so start making plans. Some new board members were elected to the national AMT Board at the annual business meeting. I want to welcome Harry Narine, MT(AMT), Francine Oran, RMA(AMT), and Marty Hinkel, MT(AMT). We look forward to having them on the board.

Our Central District had numerous award recipients at the award convocation held at this meeting. Congratulations to Kathy Sutton, MT(AMT) from Mississippi, Cyndee Carr, RMA(AMT) from Arkansas, Deborah Westervelt, RMA(AMT) from Missouri, Alberta Smith, RMA(AMT) from Missouri, Felicia Williams, MT(AMT) from Mississippi, Cecil Hunt, MT(AMT) from Mississippi, Art Contino, RMA(AMT) from Texas and Randy Swopes, MT(AMT) from Louisiana. Francine Oran. RMA(AMT), was honored with the Most Improved Publication Award. We had so many winners from the Central District and I hope I did not leave anyone out. Please let me know if I did.

If you or someone you know is confused about recording their education credits on AMTRAX, there is a video on UTube. It is an informative step-by-step video called “Quick Guide to AMTrax for CCP”.

Our AMT board is continuing to work on Strategic Planning for our organization and should have some updates for us soon.

Don’t forget that we have two upcoming joint conferences. The Great Lakes District Conference will be held October 5th and 6th at the Cincinnati Marriott North Union Centre Hotel in West Chester, Ohio. West Chester is just north of Cincinnati, Ohio. The Magnolia Educational Treasures will also be held in October on the 19th and 20th at the Holiday Inn Gulfport Airport in Gulfport, Mississippi. If you have never attended a joint meeting, well this is the time to start. You have two great meetings to choose from or attend both.

Did You Know…I recently read an interesting piece published in an AARP

bulletin and I would like to share some of it with all of you. I do subscribe to the AARP Monthly Bulletin.

YOUR HEART HEALTH IS IMPORTANT.

Did you know that Coconut Oil is one of the latest fads? Fail. There are no known benefits from it according to a Cleveland Clinic Cardiologist, Dr. Steven Nissen. Coconut oil contains 82 % saturated fat or 30% more than butter.

Did you know Anti-oxident Supplements in pill form have no benefit and high doses can indirectly cause heart problems while fruits and veggies can reduce the risk of heart attack by 30%. Fail.

Did you know fiber snack bars contain sugar and when you pack fiber into them the sugar can do more damage than the fiber does good. Fail.

Did you know home blood pressure monitors are considered an unfortunate fail? That is because approximately 70% of them were at least 5 points off. On your next visit to doctor take your cuff with and compare readings with those of the doctor’s.

Sorry folks, Did you know Fish oil supplements are a fail. Supplements do not decrease your risk of a heart attack. Oxford University did an analysis on 77,000 people that confirmed this. Eat fish, not pills.

Did you know Nuts are good for you? This is a fix.Heart Disease prevention is in the power of nuts. They can help cut out the risk of heart attacks. That’s the good news. The bad news is nuts are high in calories so watch your portions as they can lead to weight gain.

Here is the final one and it is a fix.Did you know with a doable exercise routine with mostly brisk walking and you are in your 50s you can rebuild heart strength and function with one(1) interval training day and 1-2 days strength training days.

Credit where credit is due. The article was put together by Sara Harrar, Mike Zimmerman and Selene Yeager. I thank them for the research.

Katrina Y. Fryar, MT(AMT)Katrina is the current President for the Texas State Society of AMT. She has served two terms as TxSSAMT secretary. Kat has served on many state committees that include publicity, journal, writing award, scholarship and conventions. She has also served on the National AMT Board of Directors as Young Observer Board Member in 2018. She received the AMT Distinguished Achievement Award in 2013 and the TxSSAMT President’s Award in 2016. Kat has hosted state conferences in Bryan, College Station, and Huntsville. Katrina has presented pathology and laboratory related lectures at many of the conventions and contributed articles to the state journal.

Katrina graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Genetics and a minor in History in 2004 from Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas. She was employed for two years at Texas A&M as a research assistant in a protein folding laboratory studying the conformational stability of various mutations to Ribonuclease Sa. Currently, Katrina enjoys working as a Pathologists’ Assistant with Brazos Valley Pathology and as a PRN Medical Technologist for CHI St. Joseph Health Regional Hospital. On the weekends, Katrina, and her husband Ray, raise, train and trial registered Australian Shepherds in the stock, agility, obedience, rally and conformation venues.

Jean Palmer, RMA(AMT)I am a cRMA and CAHI with over 35 years’ experience in the healthcare field. I started my career in the Laboratory as a Lab Assistant and Phlebotomist in1980. After several years I decided to go to college and earn my Medical Assistant diploma and became a MA in 1998. I worked in Family Practice and Pediatrics’. I received my Associate degree of science in 2005 after becoming an Instructor in a Career College. I worked as a Program Director of the Medical Assistant Program for several years at a local Career College. I now work in an A Family Practice Medical Home in a corporate facility.

I also operate a business where I create jewelry Masterpieces, mostly dichroic glass but I dabble in other creations as well.

I enjoy being a member of AMT and part of our great Texas Society Board. I encourage all members to think about helping out on committees and working up to running for Board positions. I was the State Proctor (now eliminated), assistant editor, convention chair coordinator and Treasurer and RMA at large in the past. I am currently on the Scholarship committee, writing award committee, and the current Vice President of TxSSAMT. My experience with these past and current positions will make me a good candidate for Vice President. It has been an honor to be with this organization and would appreciate your support in the next election as I run for Vice President again.

Thank you, Jean Palmer, AS, cRMA, CAH

Sunscreen is vital for skin protection. But researchers are finding that even ‘reef-friendly’ versions may pose

serious environmental threats. Hawaii Governor David Ige has signed into law a ban on the sale, offer, or distribution of any sunscreens containing oxybenzone or octinoxate. That means that come January 1, 2021, Hawaii hopefully will be free of these chemical-touting sunscreens. These chemicals have been shown to cause environmental harm – particularly for coral reefs.

The ban was prompted from research from a study by Haereticus Environmental Laboratory, a nonprofit scientific organization. The results of this study determined that oxybenzone and octinoxate, when washed off into the water from our sunscreen-ed bodies, cause bleaching, deformities, DNA damage and death in coral.

But just how conclusive the evidence on sunscreen’s impact on coral reefs—and whether consumers should switch to “reef-friendly” sunscreens—remains disputed. There are two kinds of sunscreen ingredients on the market, which work in different ways.

1. Physical sunscreens, also called Mineral or Inorganic, block or reflect both UVA and UVB rays;

2. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide: Chemical, organic sunscreens, which typically include oxybenzone, octinoxate, avobenzone and PABA as ingredients, absorb and reduce UV rays’ ability to penetrate the skin.

Aerosol sunscreens are the worst offender because the chemicals travel fast. While it’s unclear to what extent

exactly bleaching actually affected by sunscreen compared to other factors, an estimated 6,000 to 14,000 tons of sunscreen go into coral reef areas each year. And this is enough, to make an impact.

Up to 40 percent of coral reefs are being bleached. In the Caribbean, it’s near 60 percent. The moment you step into the ocean, the oxybenzone you’ve slathered on your skin begins to seep into the waters around you. It doesn’t take long for it to build up to dangerous levels, In the meantime, scientists are working on a few possible solutions.

One research team from the College of Pharmacy at the University of Florida is working on creating a “natural sunscreen” from shinorine, a UV-absorbing ingredient harvested from algae.

Hawaii’s Department of Land and Natural Resources reports that the sunscreen issue is more of a local matter, but remember all coastal regions have important marine life that the chemicals might be affecting, even if coral reefs aren’t common in your area. So, the main take-away point from this study is switch to zinc oxide!

For consumers both interested in protecting their skin from sun damage and protect the environment, what’s the right choice? n
