JESSE is a new interdisciplinary electronic journal aiming to:
* Foster the study of the Earth as a system and the development and exchange of interdisciplinary learning resources for formal and informal education
* Serve educators and students by publishing and providing ready electronic access to Earth system and global change science learning resources for the classroom
* Provide authors and creators professional recognition through publication in a peer reviewed journal
Journal of Earth System Science Education

* JESSE resources foster a world perspective both through interdisciplinary studies and bridging disciplines in the context of the system
* JESSE will publish a wide ranging variety of electronic content, with minimal constraints on format, including:
• Electronic learning resources, modules, courses, texts • Articles on Earth system processes• Research on ESS learning and best pedagogical practices • Disciplinary learning resources which are basic to and develop an Earth
system perspective• Educator experiences with ESS in the classroom • The use of learning modules including lesson plans• Applications of visualization • Image collections with annotation for classroom use • etc.

* JESSE is targeting undergraduate educators and students as the principal readership, expanding to a middle and high school audience as the journal matures
* JESSE aims for rapid review and turn-around of resources to be published, with a goal of 12 weeks from submission to publication for resources requiring few changes
* Initial publication will be on a quarterly basis until a flow of resource submissions is established to warrant continuous electronic publication
Journal of Earth System Science Education
Earth system and global change science for
formal and informal educationhttp://jesse.usra.edu
* JESSE will employ an open peer review process in which authors and reviewers discuss directly the acceptability of a resource for publication
* Reviewer comments and attribution will be available with the resource upon acceptance for publication
* JESSE will also implement a moderated peer commentary capability where readers can comment on the use of a resource or make suggestions
* In the development phase, JESSE will also conduct a parallel anonymous review of content to validate and ensure credibility of the open review approach

* JESSE is collaborating with the Digital Library for Earth System Education (DLESE) as a federated partner
* JESSE review criteria parallel DLESE’s and include:
Scientific credibilityPedagogical effectivenessPresentation style and ease of useAdequacy of documentationRobustness and sustainabilityImportance or significance Motivational or inspirational value
