Breeding of Tufted Puffin (Fratercula cirrhata)

Nami Tomisawa

Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan

Fratercula cirrhata

Introduction In June 2018, we started to rear and exhibit five Tufted puffins, one male and four females, in the “Aleutian Islands”.

tank. The male (individual number: No.1) and one of the females (individual number: No. 3) mated, and then laid an

egg on June 21st 2019, which was hatched on July 31st 2019. The hatched chick smoothly grew, left the nest at 48-

day-old and is still thriving. Here, we report the process leading to reproduction after their exhibition started.

Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan

Aonyx cinerea

Introduction Ever since our opening, Kaiyukan has been keeping and exhibiting Asian small-clawed otter, Aonyx cinerea. Journal

of Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan “KAIYU” has introduced our knowledge obtained during keeping this species or

ingenuities made for the exhibition. However, Asian small-clawed otter’s circumstances in the wild actually largely

remain unknown because sufficient researches have not been conducted in Southeast Asia where the species inhabit.

We therefore visited Kingdom of Thailand in 2018 and 2019 to make an opportunity for expanding our knowledge,

and compiled information collected at local zoos or aquariums.

New Exhibition “For Environment of Future”

Yuriko Kawabe, Kazushi Chimoto, Hiroyuki Murakami, Shingo Nakagawa

Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan

Introduction

Kaiyukan opened in July 1990. Based on our concept “All things are connected”, we present our

theme, the relationship between the Pacific Rim volcanic belt, “Ring of Fire” and various living things

which inhabited “Ring of Life”, with using the unique architectural structure and the large exhibits

which recreate natural environment. In March 2013, we focused on three regions affected by global

environmental changes and launched “New Interactive Exhibit Area” where visitors can actually feel

the temperature of their habitats, hear animal sounds or smell them. It raised public awareness of

biodiversity and environmental problems. During the next five years, the impact of global warming

became more immediate issue and “marine plastic waste” was considered a global marine

environmental problem and taken up as a major theme of G20 Osaka summit (Summit on Financial

Markets and the World Economy) held in June 2019. Under these circumstances, we considered that

raising public awareness of global and marine environmental problems and conservation is our more

significant social role than ever; therefore, it was decided to open an exhibition in regard to

environment. Aiming to attract interests from wide range of visitors including inbound tourists and

motivate them to think “what I can do” for the future of our planet and marine environment, we

reviewed the contents, designs and exhibit items. After these commitments, we created the new

environment-themed exhibition “For Environment of Future” in the “New Interactive Exhibit Area”

on April 1st 2019.
