Create a blind contour drawing

• Set the tip of your pencil on the page and start drawing,

• Resist the urge to look at the page

• Don’t lift your pencil until you are finished.

Words

Words are powerful and can be very beautiful

For this week I would like you to think of a word that appeals to you.

Write it on your page, repeat it in different styles, make it large and small, change the direction of the writing on your paper. And illustrate/decorate it.

Think graffiti!

Creating your journal• By now I am hoping that you will have

found an old book ready to become your journal.

• To begin you may need to remove some pages, this depends on the thickness of the book, but if you are planning to add lots of bits and pieces (yes, you are planning to add lots of bits and pieces!) it will need to be thinned out. If the book is a traditionally bound one it is possible that you can just remove pages from the middle but be aware that it can make the binding looser. Alternatively you can use a craft knife and remove pages with that.

• Then it’s time to decorate your pages!

Preparing your journal

• Now the only thing holding you back is your imagination! I am deliberately not showing examples because I want your journal to be personal to you.

• Acrylic paint, paper, tissue, glitter, tracing paper, coloured papers, whatever takes your fancy.

• Each page will benefit from a surface on which you can write/doodle, though you may find that you prefer to work on the actual text on some pages.

• Add texture, colour, density to suit yourself and to inspire you in your work.• This book will be personal to you, a work in progress and something to look

back on in the future.• I will give you projects, but please feel free to add to it at any time with

whatever takes your fancy.

Journaling Appreciation

Art helps us to revisit the value of ordinary thing like the pretty colours in a splash of morning light on a tablecloth or the familiar and nostalgic aspects of old beer cans.Art embraces appreciation. For this week’s project, look around you, find something you like the look of and draw it! You can complete it during the week, in whichever medium you choose. It will be added to your journal, so bear that in mind for size.
