Hisaccount of the aftermath of the atomic bombdropped on Hiroshima, Japan, (Hiroshima,published in 1946) allows its readers to witnesshistory; fiction gives its readers an opportunity tolive it.

Reports on AIDS, The San FranciscoChronicle, 1981 1985. In 1999, theDepartment of Journalism at New YorkUniversity ranked Shilts's AIDS reportingfor the Chronicle as one of the top 100

works of journalism in the United States.He also published several books on AIDS,including one on Harvey Milk, a gaypolitician who was assassinated, whichwas recently made into a movie. His worksbrought the truth and reality about AIDS toforefront of the publics attention.

In 1969, Seymour Hersh exposed the story ofthe massacre from the Vietnamese village MyLai, where 555 unarmed civilians, according tothe American journalist, were killed by USsoldiers. He is known as one of Americaspremier investigative reporters. He has won

more than a dozen major prizes in journalismand was awarded the Pulitzer Prize forInternational Reporting in 1970 for his work onthe massacre in South Vietnam. The report

prompted widespread condemnation around theworld and reduced public support for theVietnam War in the United States

Without record, how do we learn from ourmistakes? Journalists tell stories in interesting ways,

with facts and quotes from the people whoare important to the story.

Photojournalists capture moments to makememories last.

Journalists report the truth that is always backed up by research. They do not alterreality.

Most of all

Journalism is both an information source anda watchdog. Without it, democracy would seizeup.

But remember, as a French novelist once said,Free press can, of course, be good or bad, but,most certainly without freedom , the press willnever be anything but bad. Journalism , forbetter or for worse, is the best example of thefreedom of individuals and the importance offree thought in a democracy .
