The Royal Society is a self-governing Fellowship of many of the world’s most distinguished scientists drawn from all areas of science, engineering, and medicine. The Society’s fundamental purpose, reflected in its founding Charters of the 1660s, is to recognise, promote, and support excellence in science and to encourage the development and use of science for the benefit of humanity.

The Fellowship includes over 60 Nobel Laureates.

Current Fellows and Foreign Members include Jocelyn Bell Burnell, Tim Berners-Lee, Richard Dawkins, Joseph Stiglitz, Elizabeth Blackburn and Venki Ramakrishnan. Previous Fellows and Foreign Members include Charles Darwin, Paul Dirac, Albert Einstein, Stephen Hawking, Dorothy Hodgkin, Isaac Newton, Ernest Rutherford and Christopher Wren.

About the Royal Society

In 2020 the practice and progress of science have been discussed by society more than ever before. Chief Scientific Advisors have become household names explaining the mathematical models and practical public health measures that affect all our lives at a time of pandemic.

As researchers all over the world were sent home from their labs and university offices, the Royal Society continued to publish and disseminate research. We dropped our paywall on 24 March to ensure uninterrupted access to articles for those off campus and we helped to set up a number of initiatives around Coronavirus COVID-19 research, including rapid peer review and registered reports. You can find an introduction to our resources on page 9.

2021 will no doubt see the continuation of this work, but we are also looking further into the future and continuing to develop both our individual journals and our overall approach to publishing. In 2021 we’ll be offering Read & Publish deals for the first time, and you can find details on page 6. Our open access memberships and subscriptions remain available, so that each library can choose the model that suits them best at this time of transition.

We look forward to meeting librarians, research administrators and authors again when we can, and thank you for your continued support of our journals.

For librarians:

• One simple annual fee tailored to your institution based on: – current subscription spend – average APC spend over 2 years to stabilise peaks and troughs – Open Access membership fee if applicable

• Full access to journal articles

• Perpetual access to content published in a year when the deal was in place

• One-year deal reviewed and revised for following year.

For researchers:

• Only the corresponding author needs to belong to an institution with a R&P deal

• No fees or invoices, just pick your institution when you submit

• Uncapped OA publishing either across the portfolio or within physical or life sciences.

Contact us and we’ll calculate your tailored R&P price for [email protected]

Read & Publish

Read & Publish (R&P) is a new way to purchase both content and open access publishing. Institutions pay one tailored annual fee based on subscriptions and APC spend. This fee entitles researchers at the institution to access our content and covers the publishing costs for an unlimited number of papers.

A Read & Publish agreement will be most valuable for universities that subscribe to our journals and have high levels of research output published with us.

The agreement also creates the opportunity to publish open access in subjects where funds for article processing charges have not been available. Our broad scope and cross disciplinary approach mean we can accept papers in many different scientific subjects.

Royal Society publishing policies meet the guidelines set down by a range of major funders including the Wellcome Trust, Research England, NIH, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, HHMI, UKRI, and the European Commission. All Royal Society journals are Plan S compliant.

Subject focus

COVID-19 The Royal Society is a signatory to the Wellcome statement on research findings and data relevant to the COVID-19 outbreak which aims to ensure that relevant research and data are shared rapidly and openly. The statement asks that researchers share interim and final data along with protocols and standards, both with the research community and the World Health Organisation. This is in order to inform the worldwide public health response and help save lives.

A collection of relevant work published by the Royal Society can be found at:

royalsocietypublishing.org/topic/special-collections/novel-coronavirus-outbreak

Theme issues include• Multi-scale dynamics of infectious diseases

• Modelling infectious disease outbreaks in humans, animals and plants: epidemic forecasting and control

• Emerging infections: what have we learnt from SARS?

Individual papers address many relevant topics includingmodelling the cost of vaccine uptake, viral spillover among mammals, and exploring psychological reactions to self-isolation.

As the UK’s national science academy, we represent and support the entire range of science and work to promote best practice in publication ethics and the assessment and dissemination of science.

We support the principles of open science and open data, including funder information through the Crossref Funder Registry, researcher disambiguation through ORCID, version control through Crossmark, and preprint servers. We are working to implement open peer review across our journals.

We are committed to the accessibility of research and rapid communication and encourage researchers to deposit pre-publication versions of articles in appropriate preprint repositories. Open Biology, Royal Society Open Science, Biology Letters, Proceedings B and Journal of the Royal Society Interface now support submission of manuscripts directly from bioRxiv. Authors can transfer their manuscript information and metadata without having to re-upload files.

In Proceedings B the new Biology in Practice article type addresses new and broader scientific practices that influence research quality, scientific community health, and the public understanding of science.

Papers in Royal Society journals are highly cited for many years after first publication and are highly rated both when using traditional assessments such as Impact Factor and broader measures.

The Society’s commitment to public engagement and wider role as a grant giving organisation means research published with us can often find a wide audience outside science and academia.

Violent video game engagement is not associated with adolescents’ aggressive behaviour: evidence from a registered report published in Royal Society Open Science made the top thirty of the Altmetric top 100. It was covered by over 190 news outlets and mentioned in over 4,000 tweets.

The Biology Letters paper Herring gulls respond to human gaze direction made headlines across the world in the summer of 2019 with over 200 news mentions.

In 2012, we introduced a transparent pricing mechanism that accounts for the impact of Open Access (OA) content and its ‘author / funder pays’ revenue. This ensures that we are not paid both a subscription and an article publication charge (APC) fee for the same article. If the percentage of non-OA articles drops so will the price.

Full transparency, pricing information and all figures can be found at royalsociety.org/journals

Transparent pricing mechanism

• Articles continually published online with final pagination to enable immediate citation
