Making a charitable gift is not the end, but the beginning. The gift, itself, is not the destination; it is the first step. Any gift – no matter how largeor how small – opens a pathwayinto the future. You give the first gift, then the second, and the third…… and “giving” becomes, quietly,“philanthropy” – a progression of steps, one after another, taken for the well-being of humankind.

Step by step, your giving becomes uniquelyyour journey …..a journey built around yourhopes, your dreams, your faith in the future.

It is a journey to be savored, to be shared with your family and loved ones.

It is the journey of a lifetime.

Lifetime.

Endowed funds provide a permanent financialresource for a community or an organization.

In an endowed fund, the principal is not expended. Charitable gifts are awarded only from a portion of the earnings of the principal.

As the chart below illustrates, a $1 millionendowment, established in 2005, earning 8.5%

per year (net of fees) would have a cumulativeamount available for grantmaking in excess of itsbase amount — $1 million — by its 20th year, all the while continuing to grow the asset base.

An endowment established with The CommunityFoundation today creates a powerful vehicle forgiving that grows ever stronger with time.

When you embark onyour philanthropic journey,The Community Foundationis there to serve as an experienced and knowledgeable guide.

The Foundation began its philanthropic journey in1964, becoming the first community foundationto be established in the State of Florida.

There had been philanthropists – great ones – in Northeast Florida before that time, but

The Community Foundation was the first organization to bring together those philanthropic spirits so that they might learn from one another, inspire one another, and attract others to their company.

Since that time, hundreds have joined us. Some arenewcomers. Others represent the third generationto be part of The Community Foundation family.

All care deeply about the community in whichthey live. They have varying points of interest, from the welfare of children to the preservationof natural resources, from the quality of publiceducation to the proliferation of the arts.Together, the multitude of interests completes a mosaic that depicts the whole of who we are.

Through the years, Jacksonville and Northeast Florida have grown and changed. The Community Foundation, and the menand women whose gifts make up theFoundation, have been instrumental in shaping that change, leaving their footprints along path.

A sample of programs from the Foundation’s portfolio include:

STRENGTHENING THE NONPROFIT SECTORThrough the Foundation’s Community BuildingFund, the Foundation helps area nonprofitorganizations improve their operations by engaging in reflective practice — the process of stepping back from the day-to-day work andviewing the organization and its work in thecontext of current and anticipated events. More than 47 area nonprofits are healthier today because of this experience.

ENCOURAGING EDUCATION REFORMThe Foundation is in the first half of a 10-yearcommitment to improve the quality of publiceducation in Duval County. The initiative, Quality Education for All, has built healthier relationships between the school system andcommunity organizations, brought together funders with fresh views on supporting publiceducation, engaged citizens around neededreforms in public schools, and invested directly in innovative programs that directlyhelp students.

SUPPORTING THE ARTS & ARTISTSThe Foundation today provides support not onlyfor arts organizations but for individual artists at critical stages in their careers. This uniqueprogram has its roots in a 1989 partnership withthe National Endowment for the Arts. Since then, the Foundation has nurtured 76 artists throughthis program.

GROWING NEW COMMUNITIES OF PHILANTHROPISTSIn 2001, the Foundation, with the help of several dynamic women, launched the Women’sGiving Alliance, an initiative that invites womento pool their philanthropic dollars and invest inissues of concern to women and girls. Today, more than 200 women in Northeast Florida participate in this philanthropic endeavor.

In 2002, the Foundation supported a group ofcitizens in Suwannee County, Florida, who sawthe need for a locally-based philanthropy thatcould invest in their community. The Suwannee

Valley Community Foundation became theFoundation’s first affiliate fund and, today, raises its own funds and makes its own grantswith professional support from The CommunityFoundation.

In 2005, a group of African American philanthropists used the proceeds from the sale of Eartha M.M. White Health Care, a nursinghome for African Americans, to establish theEartha M.M. White Legacy Fund. The Fund seeksto educate and inspire African Americans toembrace philanthropy and demonstrate the benefits of collective giving. Since establishment, the Fund’s assets have grown 28%.

to plan your journey carefully and thoughtfully

Charitable giving can be the result of discipline, setting aside small amounts of money regularly for later giving, or of good fortune, the occasional windfallthat comes from a major life event.

In either case, time is your ally — taking time toaccumulate disciplined investments and watchthem grow, or taking time to contemplate futuregiving and still capture immediate tax benefitsfrom the windfall.
