INTRODUCTION TO SLAVERY
bull The Kidnapping
In 1916 African families and their children who lived freely in their own country were kidnapped from their villages
bull The Voyage
After being kidnapped the once free African men women and children were forced to board ships that took them on a long harsh and grueling voyage to America

bull The Auction
Once in America the kidnapped Africans including the children were sold on the auction block They were then the property of white men who became their owners and masters
bull Enslavement
The masters forced the kidnapped Africans into harsh cruel and degrading lives Enslavement meant that the slaves including the children worked long hard days without pay Many slaves worked in the fields taking care of the crops Some worked in the masterrsquos house doing all the cooking cleaning and caring of the masterrsquos children

UNDERGROUND RAILROAD
Slaves were punished harshly for not following the masterrsquos orders rules and wishes They were beaten killed and often sold off to another owner for their disobedience
Some slaves decided that they would rather try to escape from the harsh life of slavery through the Underground Railroad
