Liz Pavlovic NOTE FROM STORYWORKS ARTISTIC DIRECTOR | StoryWorks creates immediate arsc responses to some of the most controversial and challenging issues our society faces. We take invesgave journalism, commission playwrights to create plays based on the stories and then produce shows both in the San Francisco Bay Area, where The Center for Invesgave Reporng is based, and in the communies most directly affected by the issues. Over the past four years, StoryWorks has commissioned and produced nine producons, toured in affected communies, translated and performed work in Spanish, and challenged theater and journalism to work in innovave ways to represent our world and the immediate issues we confront. What began as an experiment to bring journalism to the stage and give voice to the mar- ginalized and oppressed became a challenge to both our community as a whole and the arsts who work with us to tell these stories. Our process evolved as we worked; this had never been done before. StoryWorks gets to the emoonal truth of invesgave journalism, based on facts and allowing for arsc exploraon, we delve into the personal stories behind the headlines and create dialogue through theater. Jennifer Welch Arsc Director, StoryWorks from Reveal and the Center for Invesgave Reporng EUGENIE CHAN is arsc director of Eugenie Chan Theater Projects. Her award-winning plays have been produced across the country, including at Centenary Stage, Cung Ball Theater, Houston Grand Opera, Northwest Asian American Theatre, Perishable, the Public Theater, San Francisco Mime Troupe, and Thick Descripon, among others. Her screen- plays have screened at the Asians on Film, Berlin, Big Apple, Cinestory, Dis-Orient, Mill Valley, San Diego Asian, and Toronto Independent Film Fesvals. Eugenie teaches at the University of San Francisco’s Performing Arts & Social Jusce De- partment, is playwright emerita at Cung Ball Theater, and a New Dramasts and Play- wrights Foundaon resident alumna.
