Journey to Fitness Extension Activity for “Journey of the Blood” Lesson
Activity Overview In this activity, families develop individual and group goals for physical activity (including minutes per day and week) and schedule their selected activities. Families reflect on barriers or challenges to meeting the goal and establish strategies for overcoming challenges and supporting each other as they work toward their goals. Families also consider milestones to celebrate progress and a group reward when the goals are met. Activity Duration: Will vary Objectives Students will:
• Develop a personal and family goal for physical activity for the week • Identify strategies for encouraging self and others to meet goals • Reflect on challenges and successes • Make adaptations to meet their fitness goals now and in the future
Standards National Health Education Standards
• Standard 1: Comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention to enhance health
o 1.8.1 Analyze the relationship between healthy behaviors and personal health o 1.8.7 Describe the benefits of and barriers to practicing healthy behaviors
• Standard 6: Demonstrate the ability to use goal-setting skills to enhance health o 6.8.2 Develop a goal to adopt, maintain, or improve a personal health practice o 6.8.3 Apply strategies and skills needed to attain a personal health goal
National Physical Education Learning Standards:
• Standard 5: The physically literate individual recognizes the value of physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and/or social interaction.
o S5.M2.8 Develops a plan of action and makes appropriate decisions based on that plan when faced with an individual challenge
Materials:
• Journey to Fitness handout Procedure:
1. As a family, discuss the importance of cardiovascular fitness and the role physical activity plays in maintaining the health of our circulatory system.
2. Work together to develop family and individual goals for improving cardiovascular fitness and complete the first section of the Journey to Fitness handout as a group. Be sure to discuss the challenges that the group faces as the plan is implemented, as well as strategies to encourage one another throughout the process.
3. Collaborate to design a detailed weekly plan that includes the specific type of physical activity the family will engage in throughout the week, as well as how many minutes the family plans to be actively engaged with each activity. (Note: It is okay if your family does not use all of the rows. For example, your family goal may be to plan to participate in physical activities only on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays so therefore only those three lines will be filled in on the chart.)

4. It is important to celebrate accomplishments and milestones. Discuss as a family how you will
celebrate when the weekly plan and goals have been accomplished. You may want to discuss how you will celebrate monthly or yearly milestones!
5. Use the monthly activity tracker section of the Journey to Fitness handout to record family activity.
6. Celebrate milestones and accomplishments as planned and make sure that all family members are encouraging one another.
Assessment:
• At the end of each week, calculate the total number of minutes of family activity for the week and record them on the tracker chart.
• As a family, discuss how successfully the plan was carried out and check progress toward family goals. Reflect on progress toward individual goals and accomplishments, as well. Celebrate progress!
• Adjust the plan. Your family may find after a week or two that you do not enjoy a particular activity
that was built into the weekly plan or you may find that the days you originally planned to be active are no longer compatible with your schedule. It is important that you work together throughout the process to modify your plan as needed.
