Laura Barreiro with Mr. Ouganda from the Fire Prevention and Supression team in PT.

Arara Abadi Concession

APP and its pulpwood suppliers have invested heavily in equipment, technology and human resources in order to detect and extinguish fires in forest concessions. A variety of detection techniques are used to locate fires. These include remote sensing; fire lookouts; aerial patrols with helicopters; ground patrols and cooperation with local communities.

Day 2 | Laboratory and R&D Center

The next day we continued our tour in the R&D Center and the lab where APP experts work to improve the quality and yield of our plantations.

APP and its suppliers work continuously to improve efficiency of resource use and pulpwood quality in their operations. Over the last few years, research has focused on improving the genetic material of plants, seed orchard management and production, the matching of species with soil types.

Day 2 | Visit of the Arboretum & « Elephant Park »

Next step in our visit was a beautiful place, the Arboretum. It is classified as a protected forest for conserving wildlife corridors, sensitive areas to erosion and high slopes for land slide, water catchment areas and habitat of endemic/endangered species.Besides being a protected area, the arboretum is also being developed into an educational, research and recreational center.

The arboretum and elephant park are parts of the protected areas covering the total areas of 42 hectares.

135 different tree species has been found in the Arboretum

Day 2 | Agroforesty Program. Our favorite part of the tour. Guava and fleshly cooked corn were delicious!

Here we met Ms. Putri, on of the villagers in charge of the agroforestry program.

Agroforestry Program in Sukajaya Village in Riau Province. This is one of the 500 villages where APP will develop agroforestry programs. In the next 5 years, PT.  Arara Abadi, one of APP suppliers in Indonesia provided 770 ha for livelihood plantations and agroforestry. The area is managed by farmers union, consisting of 8 families.

APP’s program in the village includes:

Training for fruit & vegetable crops (melon, watermelon, bean, spinach, cucumber and corn) and fishery (nila and gurame fish) for villagers

Provision of heavy equipment Product marketing partnership:

marketing the products in traditional markets and major supermarkets in Pekanbaru, Riau’s capital

Day 3 | Visit to Indah Kiat Perawang mill

The Indah Kiat Perawang Mill is an integrated pulp and paper mill located on a 2,400-hectare site in Riau Province, Sumatra Island and is one of the largest integrated pulp and paper mills in the world.

One and a half hours away from Riau’s capital city Pekanbaru, the mill employs over 9,000 people directly and has an annual production capacity target of pulp and paper product of 2,900,000 tonnes and 1,400,000 tonnes respectively.

In the mill we followed the main phases of the paper making process, beginning with the logs arriving to mill to end with a photocopy paper ream in our hands

Day 3 | Visit to Indah Kiat Perawang mill

Every day, 300 pulpwood trucks enter the mill. Each of this trucks is given a code identifying its source. All wood deliveries are accompanied by documentation, endorsed in the forest by Ministry of Forestry agents.

The documentation shows the source of the wood, the wood type, and its volume. Only trucks registered with the company and issued with a unique identification number are used to transport wood materials to APP mills. Independent government officers control the wood legality at the entrance of the mill. These procedures are designed to ensure that pulpwood coming from illegal sources is rejected and never enters the mill.

Day 3 | Paper Making process: Log yard and woodchipper

Log yard

The pulp and paper industry’s most important raw material is pulpwood. At APP, we rely on the principles of sustainable development in managing our pulpwood plantations to ensure continual production and growth within a healthy forest ecosystem.

Woodchipper

Woodchipping process: The logs enter into a machine that cuts them in small chips to then start the process of paper making into a boiler.
