Buttons is a 12-year-old Beagle who is soon to join

us as a resident, coming from North Carolina. He

had been surrendered by his person who is

terminally ill, but was not adjusting to shelter life

and was rapidly declining. Journey’s End received

a call, and was told of his plight, and he will be

joining us soon. We are sometimes amazed that so

many people in faraway places have heard of us!

Buttons will soon join Muffin and Lacy, and their

space will be known as the “Senior Salon.”

Muffin is a 17-year-old Lab mix, brought to us by

animal control. Muffin is amazingly healthy for her

age. Her owners are both terminally ill and Muffin

had lived all her life with them. A kind animal

control officer intervened contacted us, and

brought her to Journey’s End.

On her first evening with us, she had to be given

fluids, and was reluctant to accept the food we

manually put into her mouth. But the following

morning, we passed the test and she began

gobbling food, especially special senior dog treats.

Muffin is now eating well, wagging her tail, and

loves to cuddle up in a cat bed. Another of our

seniors, our quiet, gentle Lacy, is Muffin’s

roommate and companion now, and they are

becoming very fond of each other.

Farewell to Sherlock

We recently had to say goodbye to our beloved troublemaker, Sherlock the

goat. He came to us at less than a year old, having been raised as a high

school farm project and narrowly missing being sold at an auction. He was

very friendly and thought nothing of knocking down the fence to follow

people. He eventually became as strong as an ox and liked to bully staff

members by pinning them in a corner or trying to knock them down. (The

only thing he feared was water from the hose, which we had to keep handy

at all times.) He was definitely our alpha goat, but he lived in peace with

the other goats and sheep. He always had a twinkle in his eye and what

seemed like a smile on his face. RIP Sherlock.

Tigger no longer lives in isolation! He had been in a cage at first,

due to his splinted leg fractures with a cast, but he is now able to

come out into the kitchen for a limited time. He has ventured to the

adjoining room’s couch where the dogs are, and is beginning to

show interest in seeking more adventures. He has continued to

return to his open cage, where he still seems to feel a sense of

security, but before long, we fully expect he’ll feel safe enough to

freely roam!

Bonnie is a small 1-1/2-year-old terrier mix who is paraplegic. We

will never know her whole story, but last December, she was taken to

a vet in Orlando to be euthanized. The vet kept her until three weeks

ago, when they called Journey’s End. Since coming to us, she is being

kept in her own space, due to her small size, until her wheels arrive.

When we first got her, she shook continually and was petrified of

being picked up. She has almost stopped shaking now, but she is still

anxious over sudden movements. She seems very frightened of being

hurt, and we suspect she was a victim of cruelty. But now she is safe

with us, and she barks to be cuddled and for treats, and once she is in

our arms, she is content. Bonnie is becoming much calmer, and we’re

hopeful that in time, this sweet dog will feel completely safe, knowing

she is finally loved.

CAT HOUSE FUND

Finally, we see a light at the end of the tunnel! After receiving multiple

estimates, we have found a contractor we are confident in entrusting with this

special project. We were in a state of shock at the estimate for the work—

$130,000—until we became aware of the full extent of the work required,

which also involved finding an architect who could provide suitable building

parameters specific to the needs of cats.

Much of the cost is due to the need for demolition and rebuilding of the

entire front section of the Cat House. An entirely new electrical system is

needed, and there will be a new metal roof, as well as a split air conditioning

unit, which is much more efficient than the small units we have now. There

will also be special germ-resistant vinyl flooring, and it will be never need to

be replaced.

Now that everything is in place to finally begin this long-needed project, the

next step is to raise the necessary funds. If you'd like to donate to this project,

please specify "Cat House" on your check or with your online donation.

And please help us to spread the word, so we can continue to provide a safe

and healthy home for the cats. Our supporters have been our animals' angels

throughout the years, and we’re so thankful for your continued support!

Attitude (left) came here as a tiny young pig who couldn’t use his hind legs and was about to be put down. He soon outgrew the paralysis (possibly a nerve problem) and is now estimated at over 700 pounds.Gretel (right) is a sweet Nubian goat who came to us after being injured in a dog attack at her previous home. Her best friend is Banjo the sheep, and they sometimes have sparring matches before settling down and resting together. I came in for a massage

but all I got was a pedicure!I don’t need cleaning, I’m a pig!
