Joy of Giving Wish Tree T he Joy of Giving Week is India’s “festival of giving”! Since 2009, the festival is celebrated every year, in the week including Gandhi Jayanti, i.e., October 2, and brings together Indians from all walks of life, to celebrate “giving”. From auto drivers to CEOs, school children to celebrities, homemakers to opinion leaders, millions of people give their time, money, resources or skills back to society- by creating or participating in “events” of their choice. A giving event could be as simple as a family taking out the maid’s children for an ice-cream party, or as large as the Design For Change Contest that had 200,000+ school children across India participating and volunteering to make a difference. Events are organised by individuals, social groups, schools, colleges, NGOs, corporates, media houses and others. 1.5 million people participated in 700+ events across 70+ cities and towns, and millions of volunteer hours.

Wish Tree

The Joy of Giving Week is India’s “festival of giving”!

Since 2009, the festival is celebrated every year, in

the week including Gandhi Jayanti, i.e., October 2,

and brings together Indians from all walks of life, to

celebrate “giving”. From auto drivers to CEOs, school children

to celebrities, homemakers to opinion leaders, millions of people

give their time, money, resources or skills back to society- by

creating or participating in “events” of their choice. A giving event could

be as simple as a family taking out the maid’s children for an ice-cream party, or as

large as the Design For Change Contest that had 200,000+ school children across

India participating and volunteering to make a difference. Events are organised by

individuals, social groups, schools, colleges, NGOs, corporates, media houses and

others. 1.5 million people participated in 700+ events across 70+ cities and towns,

and millions of volunteer hours.

Amongst the few suggested ideas for Joy of Giving Week 2012 for the corporate sector is

the concept of Joy of Giving Week Wish Tree, henceforth referred to as the JGW ‘WISH TREE’.

The corporate can have a JGW ‘WISH TREE’ put up in the lobby / canteen with Wish Cards, from one or more NGOs supported by the corporate.

Example: 1 Pencil Box - Rs. 50/-, 5 Washing Soap - Rs. 50/- etc.

The corporate can promote the concept through various intramedia available and encourage employees to pick one card and participate in the ‘Festival of Giving’.

The more cards get picked up, the more they get replaced by JGW Smileys, henceforth referred to as Wish Fruit (‘WF’), and the fruitier the tree looks and shows how many people are committing to the cause.

Why should your company do this?• great way to engage employees in giving back

• will tangibly impact lives of the poor

• fun activity that creates a sense of community

• brings a smile to everyone’s face in the morning when they come to work

• will make visitors to the company feel good

Objective

how does the JgW ‘WiSh Tree‘ Work

JGW ‘WISH TREE’ will have a variety of WISHES displayed, say 4 or 5 of them, e.g. a pencil box worth Rs. 50, 2 school

uniforms for a child costing Rs. 300, Sunday Feasts for an old person worth Rs. 150, 5 cakes of washing soap worth Rs. 50 etc.

Employees / customers / visitors desirous of fulfilling any of the wishes may pick the card and write their name, employee ID and cell number on the reverse of the tag. This would then be dropped into a drop box next to the tree. The person may then pick a JGW Smiley Tag,

Wish Fruit (‘WF’) from another open box lying there, fill in his name and replace it at the place of the Wish Card.

In case of visitors, they would leave the employee id field blank, write their name and phone #, and the CSR/HR rep can contact the person later to collect their donation

The CSR / HR of the corporate will then contact the donor and collect the monies as per pre-decided procedure e.g. Deduction from salary, cash collection etc.

The Placement and NgO Selection

Install the JGW ‘WISH TREE’ in the lobby / cafeteria or such area of maximum congregation

of employees,

customers and /

or visitors.

The JGW ‘WISH TREE’

can be wall-supported,

or be made to stand

independently on a

pre-provided stand.

For NGO selection you

may choose any 1 or

more NGOs that your

corporate partners with, for this initiative, and work with them on creating the ‘wish cards’ for

your tree.

how to get your wish tree in place?JGW is a festival of giving, and

not an organisation. All our

ideas are “free, open source”

ideas for people to copy and use.

Therefore, you should feel free

to design your own wish tree,

cards and fruits yourself and get

it made directly. However, we

know that as corporates, you

may not have the time to do this.

Our volunteers have identified

1 vendor, who has worked to

create a nice design for all of

these, and has agreed to produce them and deliver them in Mumbai at a very reasonable cost.

You are welcome to reach out to this vendor and order your trees directly from him. Please note

that JGW volunteers do not get any commissions or income out of this, and you are totally free to

source your trees from anywhere... Details of the design that our volunteers recommend, and the

vendor’s pricing and contact information are presented in the next few pages...
