“At the CLC I learned how to make a movie on a green screen and it's easier than I thought. They also taught us about being a road block to others by telling them a cool story while the teacher is talking. It causes a red light in their head.” “I learned how to bake bread and I learned about being a leader, a leader-‐follower and a follower and that taught me I'm a leader-‐follower and everyone is those is very important.” “Another thing that I've learned is how to be better socially with other kids. I've had trouble with that in the past, so it is a pretty big and important thing for me. It might not be so special for other kids, but it is for me. The reason for that is because at my old school I was always an outsider, but at the CLC, I feel like the other kids are more open and accepting and like I'm really apart of the group, and that I'm not really the outsider anymore.” “I learned how to plant seeds and how to follow their growth progress with a graph and I learned how to do a science project properly with the Purpose and hypothesis and that kinda stuff.”
Welcome to the Community Learning Centre
Engagement through creativity, critical thinking, respect and community. These are the foundations of our learning programs at the CLC. We believe that learning should relevant, inspiring and stimulating and that our work may contribute to a more thoughtful, caring and hopeful world.
The goal of the Community Learning Center is to act as a bridge between the classroom and the community. The Centre primarily serves local communities by educating children of families who value real world learning. We educate the whole person (multiple intelligences), nurturing the intellectual, physical and creative potential in each person.
The Centre was started as a tool for homeschool and public/private school students. The Centre offers tutoring, workshops and two PBL Program: Teens (12-18) and Junior (6-11). Members have access to the lender’s library and curriculum kits, including Math, Science, History and Language Arts materials (books, games, manipulatives, experiments, artifacts and worksheets).
The Centre also offers support for parents. Workshops and meetings are announced throughout the month around: parenting, learning support and social-emotional behaviour.
Teachers at the Community Learning Centre are BC certified, trained professionals who:
• promote inclusiveness and respect. • have experience tailoring lessons to individual learning styles. • have experience working with families, community members, and volunteer organizations. • provide a variety of support for children and families: role modeling, referrals, team
meetings, lesson plan development, sharing information and resources.
Our teachers are dedicated to developing each child's social, emotional, physical, creative, communication, literacy and cognition skills. Teachers are considered “learning coaches” that build independence and self-confidence in their students. They encourage creativity, promote sharing and problem solving, aid in concept building. With responsive curriculum, our “learning coaches” (certified teachers) develop programs as they listen and observe your child in action. In this education style your child becomes part of an engaged, reflective program that is based on their interests.

About the Community Learning Centre
Our Teachers
The Community Learning Centre PBL Program is an alternative learning program designed for homeschool families and for students transitioning in or out of public/private school. Project-based Learning is an opportunity for children to learn through real world, hands-on learning.
The goals of this program are to:
1. Find a comfortable starting point for each child’s learning style. 2. Help students learn at an individual pace. 3. Promote learning by doing (hands-on projects). 4. Aid students with learning struggles (develop strategies and tools) 5. Help students build confidence in elements of the BC curriculum. 6. Encourage cooperation, respect and collaboration.
PBL is Action-orientated Learning
Students start the program with group skills work and discover each others gifts and abilities. We build on our strengths to design an event or theme. Students work together to turn their idea into action. Teachers help students with the planning, designing and execution of their projects, while naturally integrating language and literacy, mathematics, science and history into the day-to-day events.
Students in the Teen Program take frequent field trips within the Cowichan Valley and South Island (Victoria, Sooke, Sidney) to explore the “world as a classroom.” Examples of fieldtrips: Government House and the Legislate, Aviation Museum, Chinatown, Zoma Farm, Cobble Hill Mountain)
Students in the Jr. Program spend three weeks of each term working on differtn theme-based learning projects: weeks 2-5) Social Studies theme; weeks 6-9) Science theme; weeks 10-13). Students culminate their learning with an Museum Night Open House, inviting friends, family and parents to look at their displays, artifacts, videos, photos, art and projects.
Our programs are designed to build independence and self-confidence. They encourage creativity, promote sharing and problem solving, aids in concept-building and guides students to become life-long learners.
Proje ct-Based Learning
The Community Learning Centre strives to work with students who:
• are keen to take on the challenge of an enriched academic program; • are eager to participate in a wide variety of activities; • have a positive attitude towards learning; • are capable of fulfilling the school's mission; and • make up a student body that is economically, globally and ethnically diverse.
The Community Learning Centre offers both formal and informal assessment. Students enrolled in SelfDesign and other DL Programs benefit from weekly Program Updates, which they can copy and paste into their own reports. Informal Assessment is used as a diagnostic tool and may take the form of:
• Reading Comprehension • Self Assessment • Observation notes • Sample work • Interviews with students • Portfolios • Dictation • Weekly Reports
For more formal assessment, we provide:
• Tests • Surveys • Homework tasks (reading/writing assignments) • Socratic Dialogue

Our Students
Welcome to the
Jr. Project-based Learning Program
Jr. PBL Program Monday & Thursday 9:00 am – 12:00 pm
Ages: 6-12
When children learn through play they succeed in learning and in life. The goal of the Jr. PBL Program is to imagine, explore, build and try out ideas. Emphasizing hands-on, real-world learning experiences, the PBL approach to education increases understanding, helps students develop stronger ties to their community, enhances students’ appreciation for the natural world, and creates a connection between the classroom and home.
Your child will explore exciting curriculum topics through reading and writing, art, drama, nature and technology. Students will create book reports and dioramas, papier-mâché artifacts, theme-related songs, and movies! These are just some of the exciting resources we will incorporate into our daily routine.
Students in the program will:
Step 1: Choose a theme to work on as a class: Ancient Egypt, Space Exploration, Bridge Construction, Make a Picture Book, etc.
Step 3: Create individual plans of action: we will plan out the steps of our project, make a list of goals for ourselves and talk about how we want to show what we’ve learned (with words, pictures, diagrams, charts, videos, etc.)
Step 4: Make it happen: each day students will work with “learning coaches” (certified teachers) to brings their projects to life.
Step 5: Share it with the world!
Monthly themes are tied into the BC Curriculum to make your child's learning relevant, meaningful and purposeful to their own lives.
Please note: The CLC offers three PBL Programs throughout the school year. If you wish to register for Fall, Winter and Spring programs, please indicate your request on the registration form.

Reading and Math Skills Program

Ages: 6-12
The CLC will be offering a special program that focuses specifically on reading and math skills. This class is designed to build on skills and create layered learning that supports the BC Curriculum.
Reading and Writing:
This program is designed to address the needs of individuals in the areas of phonemic awareness, reading, writing, spelling and comprehension skills based upon assessments and recommendations. The strategies used are centered around the foundation of Hooked on Phonics, the Orton Gillingham program plus other powerful programs such as Blended Structure and Style in Writing, Precision Reading, and concrete comprehension and spelling strategies.
Mathematics:
The program is designed to promote a broad range of problem-solving skills, such as mathematical modeling & analysis, scientific computation & critical assessment of solutions. The problems we work with are inspired by real problems. The idea of these activities is to do hands on mathematics by playing, games, crafts and motion. The main goal is in thinking and having fun. The intent is to give positive and successful experiences for all age groups from kindergarten to university. Materials for this program have been developed over the years by course teachers.
