Livestock watering availability and accessibility based on remote sensed small water bodies and national wells

database: a preliminary study in Niger

MARS-FOODSEC

JRC Place on dd Month YYYY – Event Name 2Nairobi - 26-30/09/2011 - Crop and Rangeland Monitoring Workshop

Livestock is crucial for livelihood of millions of people living in food insecure areas

Livestock and related issues are quite “neglected” in most of the Food Security EWS, probably because of lack of data and monitoring difficulties

WHY?

JRC Place on dd Month YYYY – Event Name 3Nairobi - 26-30/09/2011 - Crop and Rangeland Monitoring Workshop

Water availability and accessibility is a basic concern for breeders

Limitation of this resource could have negative impact on movement possibilities and consequently in the exploitation of pasture resources

WHY?

JRC Place on dd Month YYYY – Event Name 4Nairobi - 26-30/09/2011 - Crop and Rangeland Monitoring Workshop

• Provide information for planning purposes

• Identify strategic small water bodies to be monitored in an EW view

OBJECTIVES

JRC Place on dd Month YYYY – Event Name 5Nairobi - 26-30/09/2011 - Crop and Rangeland Monitoring Workshop

• Small Water bodies detection based on 10 daily SPOT images 1km* (free available @ VGT4Africa Web Site)

• Villages (INS, 2003)

• Georeferenced wells (from SIGNER project), out of a buffer of 2km from villages

• FAPAR derived from SPOT images 1km (free available @ VGT4Africa Web Site)

CONCLUSIONS 1/3

• The study is in a preliminary stage but the results are quite interesting

• It shows the lack of water availability in some important grazing areas and drive the extension of pastoral water network

• It confirms the importance of monitoring the water bodies for their essential contribution in assuring livestock watering in most part of the country

JRC Place on dd Month YYYY – Event Name 14Nairobi - 26-30/09/2011 - Crop and Rangeland Monitoring Workshop

• There is a general need to have better quality data: establish new or strength present collaborations/networks with data providers at international and national level

• All data are free and easily available: the study can be replicated by national institutions easily

CONCLUSIONS 2/3

JRC Place on dd Month YYYY – Event Name 15Nairobi - 26-30/09/2011 - Crop and Rangeland Monitoring Workshop

• Strength the network of information producers/researchers community and share experiences, approaches and methodologies
