Application

Chain lubrication is supposed to adjust the coefficient of friction between product container (bottle, can, packaging board, …) and conveyor track.

Fr = µ x Fn

Not minimizing but optimizing!

Coefficient of friction

Range of optimal friction is nearly the same.

Packaging (bottles / cans) Optimal friction value

PET 0,08 – 0,12

Glass 0,08 – 0,12

Glass, transport 0,10 – 0,15

Aluminum cans 0,08 – 0,12

Chain Lubrication

For chain lubrication friction depends on several parameters:

Material combination of container and chain

Size and weight of container (material, empty or full) and center of gravity

Cleanliness of conveyor track / container

Washed or unwashed returnable bottles

Speed of conveyor track

Foot print of the container

Coefficient of friction

Chain Lubrication

Coefficient of friction

For chain lubrication friction is influenced by several parameters:

Lubrication concept (lubricant)

Concentration of the lubricant

Water quality (if lubricant is diluted in water)

Status of the conveyor

Surface condition of conveyor track

Cleanliness of conveyor track (not only in regards of deposits but presence of water)

Design and performance of the filling line (curves, showers, …)

Surrounding conditions (dust, …)

Chain Lubrication Lubrication Concepts

There are several lubrication concepts in the market:

Wet lubrication – the classical approach

Semi-Dry lubrication

Extra-Dry lubrication

Ultra-Dry lubrication

Lubrication Concepts

Chain Lubrication

Wet lubrication – the classical approach Water is mixed with lubricant Typical concentration between 0.06 – 0.5%

use of more dosing pumps allow different concentrations

Zoning by solenoid valves – depending on sections of filling line Application with spray nozzles or orifices-plates Modification volume of lubricant on conveyor

on / off control (timing) different sizes of nozzles (liter / hour) needle valves

The mixed approach:

premixed / pre-diluted lubricant

fixed concentration

zoning by solenoid valves – depending on sections of filling line

application mainly with spray nozzles or orifices-plates

variation volume of lubricant on conveyor

on / off control (timing)

different sizes of nozzles (liter / hours)

needle valves

hybrid version with water reduced application for glass
