Attend a JSA Institute and be a part of the new spirit of political engagement that is sweeping the country. Explore today’s pressing policy challenges with the decision makers who are shaping the future. You’ll gain an understanding of how government works and learn how you can get involved all while sharing opinions and solutions with other high school students during experiential activities. Join us this summer at one of our JSA Institutes!

The Institute Community. Institute students represent the entire spectrum of political thought. Participants are involved in student government, journalism, debate and a wide range of activities at their own schools. Come prepared to participate in fiery debates and rousing discussions about current events with a diverse, interesting group of students.

The College Experience. From the state-of-the-art facilities of UCLA to the ivy-covered cloisters of Princeton University, the Institutes offer an exciting glimpse of college campus life. During the program, you will share a room in a residence hall with a roommate, eat some meals on campus and participate in evening activities in university classrooms. Designed for a select group of high school students from each state, a Junior Statesmen Institute is the perfect opportunity to preview the college experience.

Supervision & Guidance. Educational Staff provide guidance and supervision throughout the program. Led by the Institute Director, our experienced staff will be housed in the same residence as the students and will be responsible for the group’s health and well-being 24 hours a day. Standards of conduct are high and generally the same as those governing school-sponsored trips.

8:00am Buses depart for the State Capitol.

9:00am - 11:00amMeet in Governor’s office with the Chief of Staff and Press Secretary. Discuss how state policy can be changed.

11:00am - 11:45amQuestion the top political reporters in the state. Focus on the role of the media in elections.

11:45am - 12:45am Lunch in the Capitol.

1:00pm - 3:00pmMeet in Senate Committee Room with Senate Education Committee Chair, lobbyists for the Teachers Association & the Governor’s Education Advisor.

3:00pm - 4:00pmBreak into small groups to plan a grassroots campaign to get an important piece of legislation passed.

4:00pm Buses return to the university.

4:30pm - 7:00pmDinner and free time on campus, including an opportunity to visit the university bookstore.

7:00pm - 9:00pm Evening briefing and discussion followed by a student-run debate.

Bringing together an exciting Speak-ers Program with interactive student activities, JSA Institutes offer a unique perspective on today’s political issues. Students meet and question leaders who make and influence public policy; elected officials from all branches of government, journalists, lobbyists and political power brokers. This experience of real world politics is complemented by student-run debates, political simula-tions and social activities. A focus on specific issue areas will drive each institute giving students a chance to become experts in the topic of their choice.

Students will go beyond the sound bites offered by media pundits to gain a complete understanding of important issues directly from the decision makers and power brokers who shape public policy. JSA Institutes will give you:

•An opportunity to explore hot button issues with elected officials

•A behind the scenes look at politics in action and the decision-making driving local and state government

•A chance to polish your leadership and speaking skills

•A sneak preview of college life and the chance to make friends with students who share your interest in politics

UCLA l Los Angeles, CA l July 28 - August 1

The problems and opportunities facing great-er Los Angeles are the focus of this five-day exploration of Southern California politics. From analyzing questions of law and justice with the Chief of Police and District Attorney to interacting with the award-winning staff of the Los Angeles Times, the Institute is a chance to debate and discuss politics with leaders and students from across the region.

A daily Speakers Program takes place in the rooms and offices where L.A. leaders decide public policy, including City Hall, the County Hall of Administration, the LA Times Building, the LAUSD meeting rooms and Parker Center. Student-run debates and political simulations round out the hands-on curriculum, challeng-ing you to hone your speaking and leadership skills while working closely with peers who share your interests.

Arizona State University l Tempe, AZ l June 9 - June 12Join us for the Arizona Institute on Leadership and Politics. Students will stay on the new downtown campus of Arizona State Univer-sity and will explore the excitement of state politics and leadership in the Arizona State Capitol and in the Chambers of the Arizona Supreme Court. Learn about the challenges facing Arizona political leaders and meet the people who make the important decisions and can affect change.

The speakers program brings students to-gether with top political players in an interac-tive, hands-on exploration of who has power, and who wants power in Arizona state politics. How can we make college affordable for Arizona students? How will changes to federal immigration policy impact the citizens of Arizona? What impact has the shooting of Tucson Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and the elementary students in Connecticut had on Arizona and national politics?

At the Institute, high school student leaders from across the state will have an unpar-alleled opportunity to express their own opinions and hear the opinions of their peers in nightly debates of some of the hottest political issues in the state.
