14th Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 2 July 5, 2020

I hope this finds

you staying cool

and enjoying your

long Fourth of July

weekend. St. Clare

of Montefalco

School officially

closed its books on

the 2019/2020

school year this past Tuesday, June

30, 2020. It has been quite the

school year from the point of view

of your new administrative team.

The Fall of 2019 brought the commit-

ment to becoming a much more

tech savvy learning community.

August professional development

for staff was a two-day Google

Classroom training. Early into the

school year chrome books and

iPads were distributed to all the

classrooms allowing technology

centers with six devices in each to

be used by the young people every

day. Due to generous donations by

parishioners, supporters of our

school, and the PTO our technology

lab was given a full upgrade over

the Christmas Break. This

dedication to being cur-

rent in all teaching and

learning platforms made

it possible to transition

into the Distance Learn-

ing format needed due

to the coronavirus pan-

demic.

Fall also brought a few

encounters by our 6th

grade with the Khartoum

American School 6th

grade through skype

and facetime. A parish-

ioner invested in upgrad-

ing our Middle School

Science Lab. This invest-

ment allowed our 6th

graders the opportunity to create

water filtration systems. The children

in Sudan lacked some of the re-

sources St. Clare of Montefalco

School had in creating their own

water filtration systems. Daylight

Savings Time along with the pan-

demic interfered with the full imple-

mentation of our shared time expe-

rience. We look forward to continu-

ing this relationship in the upcoming

school year.

Students at St. Clare of Montefalco

School participated in numerous

community activities. Our young

people were very engaged in assist-

ing in the set-up of our successful

September Book Sale. The National

Junior Honor Society collected

slightly used items for new mothers

affiliated with Pregnancy Aid and

collected hats, gloves, socks for chil-

dren in need in Detroit schools. Stu-

dent Council raised money for the

St. Joseph Indian School in South

Dakota. A canned food drive was

held during the

Thanksgiving season and Valentine

Care Bags were filled by donations

brought in by students and their

families. A generous donation by a

parishioner allowed the families to

enjoy a Coney Hot Day Dismissal in

our lunchroom. The message al-

ways seems to be sharing.

The school year provided numerous

opportunities for involvement by our

students. Falcon sports is high on the

list along with forensics, drama club,

choir, band, robotics, safety squad,

flag raisers, big buddies, Spanish

club and PK lunch helpers. Chil-

dren’s Mass was attended every

Wednesday and each week one of

the classrooms was responsible for

the readings and petitions. Grade 5

burned the palms with Father An-

drew in preparation for Lent. Stu-

dents prepared for Reconciliation,

First Communion and Confirmation.

The school was moving along with

much momentum behind a suc-

cessful January Open House and a

desire to be a pilot school for the

Archdiocese of Detroit as it Un-

leashed the Gospel in the Detroit

community. Much changed when

the pandemic closed our school

building. The young people no

longer came to school in person

and all families needed devices for

their children to participate in les-

sons online with their teachers each

day. The staff, parents and commu-

nity stepped up and made learning

and the school family a priority. St.

Clare of Montefalco School stayed

in contact with all our families daily

and teachers held classes in zoom

on a regular schedule. Daily syn-

chronous learning occurred, and

teachers were available every day

from 9:00 to 2:00 live with their stu-

dents. Father Andrew created a

l ive facetime

Children’s Mass

for our communi-

ty to attend eve-

ry Wednesday.

We had out-

standing attend-

ance at these

Masses. The staff

met daily from

2:00 to 3:00 and

beyond the first

five weeks of the

closure of the

school. Staff

helped each oth-

er manage new

applications to

work with their

students. They shared information

about concerns they may have had

for some of their children and other

staff reached out to families each

week to make sure their needs were

being met. Grading formats had to

change. Report cards were shared

3rd and 4th quarter through Power

School. Graduation occurred in the

church once the Governor allowed

the churches to have one fourth

capacity in attendance. The first

ever and rare Virtual Open House

was undertaken by the entire school

community including our athletic

department.

The connecting thread through all

of this has been the adults from all

different venues connected to the

St. Clare of Montefalco School. The

teachers stepped up their game.

The parents supported all that

needed to be supported. Parishion-

ers expressed concern and even at

this time huge generous support is

coming forth to make sure all of our

children will have laptops of their

own this Fall. The good of all with

blessings from so many allows our

children to experience a strong

Catholic education even during the

worst of times. Thank you everyone

for making this year the success that

it was despite the challenges im-

posed.

Peace and safe health wished to

you all,

Principal: St. Clare of Montefalco

School

Thank you to the many

Garden Club members

who have cleaned out

beds and planted flow-

ers. It has been a very

strange year, so we have not been

able to do the usual high level of

weeding and planting. I am looking

for help to make one more big push to

clear out cluttered beds and plant a

few more flats of flowers. If you would

like to come by and help, please con-

tact me or just come on by and clean

up some beds at your own pace.

I have lawn bags and plan to make a couple of trips to

Allemon’s as needed to purchase a few flowers to plant

in some high impact areas. We will do our best to keep

the St. Clare property looking beautiful, neat, and tidy.

Once again, thank you to those of you who already

weeded and planted flowers in a few select locations.

They look great!

First Holy Communion:

Just a reminder to par-

ents that if you wish to

have a family “First

Comm un ion day”

please let Sr. Kathy know the date and

the time of the Mass. Reminder that I

need the child’s Baptismal Certificate.

Our Communal Communion day is

Saturday, August 29 at a 6:00 Mass.

RCIA: Next week on July 11, our three candidates will

be presented officially with the Creed, a statement of

our beliefs. This is what they will profess on August 15.

Please continue to pray for Bob, Wendy, and Harry.

Confirmation: Fr. Andrew Kowalczyk, CSMA will preside

at the Confirmation Mass and bestow the Sacrament

of Confirmation on August 22, at a 6PM Mass. All pa-

perwork must be received by July 15. Please inform

your sponsor of this date.

Faith Formation: This Wednesday we will have our

fourth installment of Metanoia with Fr. Dave Pavonka.

All are still welcome to join us for this last session, just

email [email protected] before Wednesday.

Mass Intentions

For The Week

Synod 16 called for a

complete renewal of

structures of our parishes

to make them radically

mission-oriented. Our goal

is to make our parishes

places where individuals

a n d f a m i l i e s c a n

encounter Jesus anew,

grow as disciples, and be equipped to be witnesses to

the Risen Christ. This continues to be our mission today,

even now in the midst of a historic pandemic.

On Pentecost Sunday Archbishop announced the next

step in the Unleash the Gospel effort. In response to

challenges facing the Archdiocese, the decision has

been made to form new groupings of parishes called

“families of parishes.” This will be put into practice in two

phases over the next two years. As this is just beginning

we do not know the impact to our parish. There will be

plethora of meetings to discuss the model and structure

of this new reality for our Archdiocese.
