Why SMEs are not Eco-Innovating?
• Not aware of Eco-Innovation• Not clear picture about real benefits for their
businesses (e.g. sales increase, cost reductions)• If they are interested on eco-innovation, not clear
idea about how to do it (e.g. information sources, BATs to apply, etc.)
• If it is needed some investment, not clear how to afford it (e.g. funding sources, pay-back period, etc.)
Needed the Government support to break these barriers

What kind of benefits could it provide to SMEs?Quickly and easily knowledge of the environmental impacts associated to their products/processes, considering their complete life cycle (e.g. carbon footprint, etc.)Identification, quantification and prioritisation of the most relevant environmental aspects of their products to focus the improvement efforts on themComparison, from an environmental point of view, of different design alternatives and communication of results in a quantitative wayAlignment with future implementing measures associated to the ErP Directive (it uses MEEuP database and rules)1
Downloadable in English and Spanish from the LiMaS website (after registration). German version available soon.

Our conclusions from these activities• SMEs are not aware of ErP Directive and its implications
• ErP Directive could be a motivating factor, but needed a higher market surveillance to guarantee its real application
• SMEs will eco-innovate if they see the real benefits for their businesses (e.g. cost reduction, sales increase, etc.)
• Needed the Government support to start the process(i.e. generate the demand from consumers and the manufacturers’ awareness)
• It is very important for ErPs manufacturers communicate correctly the benefits for the final user (e.g. why to pay more for a more efficient product)
• Needed to transfer the work already done on ErP Directive (e.g. preparatory studies) to SMEs
