TURN TO GOD

At the beginning of 2012, a local couple from the Presbyterian tradition gladly accepted the gift of a Catholic Franciscan calendar, with its 800 year old illustrations of the life of St. Clare of Assisi. This can be seen as a simple yet clear indication of how good relationships, among Christians from different traditions, has grown and blossomed in our lifetime.

Besides the good relations among Christians, Sacred Scripture is an area in which we Christians hold so much in common. Take e.g. the reading from Mark 1:15 – “Repent, and believe in the Gospel”. In Mark’s Gospel, Jesus begins his announcement to the world, his message of salvation, with these words: “This is the time of fulfilment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and believe the Gospel.”

I like to reflect on the word ‘repent’ as God’s call to all Christians to ‘turn again’ in everyday life to our Creator. We can ‘turn again’ at any moment in every day, and know that the God of steadfast Love is with us. Christ’s words are an invitation to embrace the reality of the reign of God that is within the reach of every person. Do we hear God addressing humanity, asking us to radically turn around, change our lives and accept His Word, in and through Jesus?

The season of Lent is approaching. Repentance or turning again goes hand in hand with faith. Both can spring forth from contact with the living Word, from the presence of Jesus who today still repeats to the crowds: “Repent, and believe in the Gospel”. The Word of God lived out and communicated, can work miracles still. It can give rise to a stronger visible community at Jubilee; one that can be yeast and salt for society, bearing witness to Christ, through the chil-dren now and well into the future

SWIMMING CARNIVAL THIS FRIDAY

Jubilee Years 3-7 Swimming Carnival will be held this Friday 17th February- a

reminder to please have all students at the Southport Aquatic Centre by

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Good communication between the home and the school has a significant effect on the service provided by the school. Without seeking to encroach on peoples’ privacy rights, we are always in a better position to care for and assist your child if we are aware of any relevant issues affecting your child’s learning or general happiness at school (e.g. anxiety issues, bullying issues, homework issues, student relationship issues etc.).

Your child’s class teacher is usually your first point of contact. If you feel you need to speak with the school’s Administration Team, after you have spoken with your child’s class teacher, then the following Administration Liaison Contact would be the next port-of-call:

P-2: Mr Trevor Sketcher, Yrs. 3 – 5: Mr Michael Ball, Yr. 6 & 7: Mr Brian Mason

In saying this, as the Jubilee School Principal, my open-door policy remains for all students, staff and parents.

Thank you to those parents who are in contact when necessary and to those who show their appreciation for the care being shown by their child’s teacher.

GONSKI FUNDING REVIEW

Please find attached to this newsletter a copy of a letter sent out by the Queensland Catholic Education Commission

(QCEC) regarding the upcoming funding announcements for all schools in Australia. Here at Jubilee, even though we are

an Ecumenical School, we are proudly part of the Brisbane Catholic Education Community of schools. So when it comes

to realising which sector we fall under, we are classed as a Catholic School when it comes to Government Funding.

With a large amount of media attention surrounding schools funding over the next week or so, please remember that we

are NOT a Private or Independent school.. We are an Ecumenical school which is administered by Brisbane Catholic

Education, hence we are a Catholic school in terms of the way we are funded by the State and Federal Governments.

Please have a good read of the attached documentation.

JUBILEE P&F FAMILY BBQ/BAND EVENING

Friday, February 24 will see the Jubilee P&F hold their annual Welcome BBQ. This is a night where all Jubilee Parents are

warmly welcomed to come with your picnic rugs and enjoy a night on us! We’ll feed you with a professionally cooked BBQ

and entertain you with live music. All of this, without putting your hand in your pocket!!!!!

So please mark this night in your calendars and I hope to see you there on the night!

Mr Mason, Mr Sketcher, Mr Ball and I will be cooking them!!!!!!!!! And we’ll try to make them “carbon neutral” as well!!!!!

2013 PREP ENROLMENTS

Due to the significant number of enrolment applications we receive for Prep each year and the large amount of current

family siblings placed into Prep each school year, our vacancies are becoming extremely limited.

Current families at Jubilee are not required to go through the 'Enrolment Interview' process, but I remind families that you

must still provide an enrolment application form as early as possible for each sibling due to commence their Prep year.

Submitting these to our Administration Office as early as possible, not only ensures that we have the correct amount of

places saved for siblings, but we are able to indicate to new families where they are positioned on a waitlist (in accordance

to the enrolment criteria and the date the enrolment form was lodged).

PARENT TEACHER MEETINGS

I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the large number of parents who attended the first parent meetings of the year,

which were held last week. All meetings seemed well attended and we are thankful for parents taking the time to find out

about the expectations and routines of the classroom. It was great to witness parents taking an active role in their

children’s education.

Education today is all about partnerships. The strongest of these partnerships is the one between the home and the

school. By working together, we can just about ensure that your child will have the best opportunity to reach his/her

potential.

SCHOOL FEES

School fee accounts have been sent home with the eldest child in your family . If you haven’t receive your fee account this

week, check your child’s bag first and then contact the office if it is still missing. The due date for payment of accounts is

Wednesday, March 14. Any parents who are unable to make payment in full by the due date must contact me, prior to the

due date to make alternative arrangements for the payment of fees. If you require a form for periodic payment (direct

debit) of fees, please contact the school office. My sincere thanks to the large number of families who consistently settle

their accounts promptly.

PERMISSION FORMS

This year we are continuing to enforce the policy that students will not be able to attend excursions (including swimming)

unless a signed permission form has been returned to the class teacher.

There is a legal requirement that we have signed permission forms from parents or guardians for each individual excursion

or off-campus activity. It is also important that children learn to take responsibility for returning their permission notes

MESSAGES

There are times when parents need to get messages to their children during the school day. The usual way of doing this is

for the parent to ring the school and one of the secretaries will pass the message on to the class teacher at an appropriate

time.

Similarly, if a parent wishes to contact a teacher or other staff member, please see the teacher or staff member before or

after school to make an appointment or contact the school office and the staff member will return your call at an

appropriate time.

We try to keep interruptions in the classroom to a minimum during the school day. We thank you for your co-operation.

It’s not okay to be away ... nor to be late to school When kids miss school, not only is their academic progress impeded, forcing them to catch up on missed work (which some never do), they often miss important interactions with their peers, which can compound issues of social isolation and low self-esteem. One of the most important things you can do to ensure your child has a bright future is to make sure he or she goes to school every day—and gets there on time. It sounds simple, but it’s true. The correlation between school attendance and children’s achievement levels is well-established. The more time kids spend at school, the more likely they are to experience school success. Conversely, according to a report from the Victorian Auditor General, students who are regularly absent from school are at the greatest risk of dropping out of school early and of experiencing long-term unemployment. When kids miss school, not only is their academic progress impeded, forcing them to catch up on missed work (which some never do), they often miss important interactions with their peers which can compound issues of social isolation and low self-esteem. Also, many teachers tell me, it’s often the kids who can least afford to take time off school who are most likely to be serial absentees. Of course, most people know this intuitively, yet school absenteeism is a huge problem in Australian schools—and much of it is parent-condoned. It’s hard to get an accurate picture across the country but it would appear that Australian students miss an average of between 12 and 15 days per school year, with parent-condoned absenteeism highest among young primary-aged children. That adds up to a year’s lost schooling over the school-life of a child. In today’s highly competitive world, this rate of absenteeism is alarming, putting our kids at a distinct disadvantage. That’s not a reason to be away! It’s now commonplace for children to stay away from school for reasons that would have been unheard of just twenty years ago. These include staying away to celebrate their own or a sibling’s birthday; being absent because they stayed up too late watching television; going shopping for clothes; an extended long weekend; and kids not wanting to take part in a sports day or special school event. This type of absenteeism sends a strong message to kids that parents don’t really value learning or their children’s school experiences. Australian kids only spend 15% of their total time at school. They spend more time asleep than they do at school. So we need to maximise every day to get full value. That means turning up to school every day, on time. Being late is not okay either Missing a few minutes each day may not seem like a big deal but your child may be missing more than you realise if he or she is continually late. Current research shows that mornings for most children are the most productive time of the day, with 10.00am the peak period for productivity. When children arrive late and take time to settle as they inevitably do, valuable learning time is lost. It takes strong parenting... As a parent myself I know how persuasive children of all ages can be when it comes to taking a day off school. It takes a strong will to resist the persistent pressure that kids can bring to bear, particularly if they play the guilt card with comments such as “It’s not fair that I have to go school today because Aunty is coming to visit!” Nice try. But the answer should be “No!”. As parents we need to make a commitment that our kids make the most of their precious time at school. That means that we send them to school every day, on time and ready to make the most of the school day. Of course, there will be times, such as illness or genuinely extenuating family circumstances, when kids should be away. But these need to be a rarity rather than the norm. It’s reassuring to know that you increase their chances of future success just by making sure they turn up to school every day. And of course regular school attendance also helps kids prepare for the workforce, where it will be expected that they turn up each day work-ready. The real world is unforgiving of those who stay away with NO EXCUSE.

AP ANTICS

G’day everyone! This week we’ve started with great excitement, now that we finally have access to the new and improved Bottom Covered

Area. The students are already making great use of this facility and space, which compliments our wonderful Oval, Multi-court , MPC (hall),

EYC (Early Years Centre) and Resource Centre (library) spaces in providing excellent educational and recreational space for our students.

We are proud of the fact that each of those areas is either under cover or has shade cover adjacent to it, but we still need to be vigilant with

regard to our students’ sun safety, especially at this time of year.

This Wednesday (15 Feb) all of our Yr 7 students, accompanied by Mrs Hallett, Mrs Lynes and Mr Sewell and Mr Sketcher, will

attend and participate in the Gold Coast Catholic Schools Leadership Day at Sacred Heart Church, Clear Island Waters. Our

Yrs 3-7 Jubilee Swimming Carnival will be held at Southport Pool this Friday (17 Feb) There will be a Special Assembly in the

Jubilee MPC for the Welcoming of New Staff and the Induction of our Student leaders and Parent Support People on Monday

20 Feb from 2:15pm.

We’d like to thank our teachers and all those Mums, Dads & Carers who were able to attend our Parent Information Evening last

Wednesday (8 Feb). There was a very positive feeling around the school in what proved to be another good night for those present.

Before School Expectations: With the return to use of the Bottom Covered Area, parents and carers are advised that our two before

school waiting areas will once again be the Bottom Covered Area (BCA) for Yrs 2 - 7 and the EYC (Early Years Centre) for Prep & Yr

1. Staff supervision is provided in these two areas each school morning from 8:10 - 8:30am. Our school expectation is that all

students who arrive at school before 8:30am will make their way to the appropriate one of these supervised areas and wait there until

the 8:30am bell. The only exceptions to this would be students who are with and being directly supervised by their parents/carers.

After School expectations: At home time, once dismissed by the class teachers, our students are expected to move directly to the

pick-up or departure points arranged with their parents. That would be either exiting through the top Manra Way exit or through the

bottom Binstead Way exit. Three staff members are on supervision duties each day in the bottom exit area and students are expected to sit

and wait calmly in the area under and around the bottom shade shelter .

Years 3-7 Swimming: This program is now in full swing. Parents/carers are asked to please ensure that students have their swimming

gear with them each swimming day (Tue Years 3&4 ; Thu Years 5,6&7) and are reminded that swimming caps are compulsory and

can be purchased from the school office. As mentioned above, our Jubilee Interhouse Swimming Carnival will be held at

Southport Pool this Friday 17 Feb. Parents are reminded that students are to be delivered directly to Southport Pool by 8:30am

on carnival day, not here at school.

Special School Focus: For those who are new to Jubilee, each fortnight we take one aspect of school life, ethos or policy and focus on it

pro-actively as a school community through something we call our Special School Focus. This helps to maintain our high standards in a

positive way, rather than approaching things negatively and critically. The focus is usually presented on Assembly in the form of a catchy

rhyme or jingle to help us remember and focus on it. Last week in the newsletter we addressed correct school uniform and then followed up

with the students on Friday, so this will be our first Special School Focus for 2012:

Dress shoes are black & sports shoes are white,

So always make sure that your uniform’s right.

Staff Star of the Week: Congratulations to our first Staff Star of the Week for 2012, Mr Alistair Davies, for his tireless work in organising our

school sports program, which has so far already included our Jubilee Running Club, the visit by “Total Football “soccer coaching, our Years

3-7 swimming program, district swimming nominations, our Years 3-7 School Swimming Carnival (this Fri) and our Years 5-7 Interschool

Sports Program for later this term ! Thanks Al !

New Resources : We are extremely happy to inform the community that the 32 new PCs for the Junior Lab in Block One have been

installed and ready for use. We will admit that it looks a little like a computer apocalypse ‘in there at the moment before we cull and

then dispose of old stock, but the classes are eager to use the lab as of this week. We can also announce that the Year 6 and 7

classes now have their 16 new Netbooks, making a total of 32 available to those 5 classes. While it has been a busy start to the year,

it is nice to finally see the fruits of our labour being used.

Have a great Week 4 everyone !

Regards,

Brian Mason & Michael Ball

HPE/SPORT NEWS

Swimming Carnival Events 2012: Please see the following pages for the order of events for this year's Jubilee Primary

Swimming Carnival.

Please note : The individual entries, heats, rules and general information will appear on the Jubilee website on Thursday

of this week. All parents and friends are extended a warm welcome to our Swimming Carnival and are allowed entry AT NO COST. The Parents and Friends Association will be putting on a BBQ / Sausage Sizzle on the day. Sausages $ 2.00.

Please go to The Jubilee website on Thursday for full details of your children's races and any other general information.

District Swimming : The Gold Coast North District Swimming Trials were held yesterday at The Gold Coast Aquatic

Centre (Southport). Jubilee were well represented by Antonia Hurd and Brodie Monaghan. Both of these wonderfully dedicated swimmers performed to very high standards. Brodie and Antonia were both selected in the District Team and

will now move onto the regional Championships at the TSS Pool on the 27th and 29th of February.

Brodie Placed 3rd in the 100m freestyle and Butterfly for 2002 boys and also gained a fourth in the 100m backstroke for

the same age group. Brodie is really showing great potential and his hard training is starting to shine through.

Antonia competed in no less than seven 2002 Girls events and was consistently in the first few places in every race. Her

versatility across all the major strokes is fantastic to watch. Antonia's results were 1st in the 200m individual medley, 2nd in the 100m freestyle, 50m freestyle, 50m backstroke, 100m backstroke and 50m butterfly and 3rd in the 50m

breaststroke.

We wish Brodie and Antonia 'all the best' as they take on their next exciting challenge at The Regionals.

Running Club : This terrific program commenced last week and all students who participated showed great levels of

motivation and commitment. Group 2 Running Club details will be announced in next Tuesday's Newsletter. So, keep

training those students who have put their forms in as your formal training will start very shortly.

Grade 5,6 and 7 Interschool Sport : Winter Sports Nominations will be called for on Thursday this week. All grade 5,6 and 7 students will be able to list their first three preferences for Cluster Sport and training will commence as soon as

teams and coaches are finalised. I anticipate that the first training session will take place on Monday 27th February in

school time. The first of four Winter Sport Cluster Days will take place on Monday 05th March.

Between now and Thursday's selection day, students should put some thought into the order of preference that suits them.

Winter Sports choices include :

Netball ( Girls ), Soccer ( Mixed ), Touch Football ( Girls ), Rugby League ( Boys ), A.F.L. ( Boys ), School Based Tabloid

style Sports ( Mixed ) innovative and fun minor and lead up games for students who wish to develop their sports skills in their own school environment before embarking on full inter-school sport for summer cluster.

Yours in Sport,

Alistair Davies

From the APRE

In our prayers: Tony Sealey

On Monday several staff joined with Tony Sealey at Bryce Sealey’s funeral (Tony’s Dad). Tony's Dad was greatly honoured by his children, family and friends and it was a privilege to be able to be there. Of course it was a time of deep grief, but it was just as much an acknowledgement of the deep relationships Bryce gently shared with all about him. Tony remains in our prayers. Greetings from an old friend: Helen Bramanathan Debbie and I visited Helen Bramanathan in Canberra on the weekend. For those who don't know Helen she was on the Jubilee Steering Committee (1999-2000) and then a staff member from 2001 to 2005. She was an ecumenical visionary, and a great colleague. She asked me to pass greetings and love on to all those who know her back. She is really enjoying her teaching in a small Catholic primary school in Canberra and is part of her childhood parish.

Services of Worship

Monday, 20 February: Dedication of the School Leaders, Parent Support People Volunteers and New Staff, (2pm for

a 2.15 pm start), Jubilee Hall.

Wednesday, 22 February Ash Wednesday: Prep-Yr3 Service, 9am; Catholic Lenten Mass for all Years 4 to 7 students

(11.30am, 22 Feb), Fr Antony Vadaka celebrating.

(Both services will be in the Jubilee Centre).

School Fee Concessions Applications for school fee concessions are taking place now. The relevant forms are available from the administration office. In cases of financial hardship the school will consider offering a concession on Tuition Fees. Concession applications are accepted at the commencement of each year or when the hardship within the family occurs. Concessions on fees are not ongoing and applications must be resubmitted at the commencement of each new school year. Concessions are means tested in line with Federal Government Poverty Guidelines. The assessment process takes all income into consideration including wages, youth allowance, all other Centerlink payments etc., as well as housing costs e.g. rent or mortgage.

2012 Jubilee P&F Friendship List

It is again time to form our P&F Friendship lists for 2012. Your choice to be a part of this list is on a voluntary basis and

lists will only be distributed to families in your year level. This wonderful tool is valuable to both students and parents.

A Friendship List has a few purposes:

Used for organising class and/or year level events.

Used for parents to be able to contact other families within their school level.

We ask that this form be completed and returned to either your class teacher or the office by Friday 17th February. Lists will

be collated and distributed in homework folders shortly after. Should you have any questions please feel free to contact the P&F. We thank you in anticipation of your assistance.

OSHC NEWS

Welcome back! – Welcome back to school to all our returning families and a special welcome to all our new families and siblings for 2012!

Parent/OSHC Communication – We can’t stress enough how important it is for us to maintain a constant and open communication with you as Parents & Caregivers. There is so much that we need to let you know about how our service is run and what’s going on from week to week and of course so much we need to know about your child and family to be able to accommodate you and provide our best level of care.

Now that the start of the year rush is over and we are all settling nicely into 2012, we ask that you keep us up to date, most importantly, whether your child/ren will attend on their booked days. You can do this by phoning and leaving a message (if we’re out of the office), letting the Coordinator know ahead of time if possible, and emailing. After a 3 week grace period, from this week the ‘Non Communication Fee’ (as listed in Enrolment Fact Sheet 3) of $1 per child per session will be charged.

We are doing our best to keep Parents/Caregivers informed by using our noticeboard out the front of OSHC, making entries in the school newsletter, via emails, account statements, and the sign in/out area; please check these regularly!

Swimming Carnival – If your child/ren usually attends Before and/or After School Care on a Friday, please advise us at your earliest convenience whether they will still come this Friday on carnival day. This helps us to liaise with School Administration regarding transportation to and from the pool and OSHC.

Vacation Care Booking Forms – for our new families, term time bookings and school holiday bookings are handled separately. Our pack including planned activities, costs, and other important information will be available from 2pm on Monday 5

th March both in centre and via email. Please note these bookings are on a ‘first in, first served’ basis so

please take these next few weeks to explore your options, arrange play dates/leave from work if necessary and be ready to make your booking asap.

Have a great week!
