located in a convenient exterior location, hold the house key. The Fire Department has a master key to open the Knox Box, should an emergency alarm go off. The cost is between $180 & $190, plus installation. Information regarding acquisition can be found on the website: Knoxhomebox.com We were told that Los Lunas is the first community in the state to offer this service. Plans for the new fire station, to be located on the west side of the interstate, is moving forward, with groundbreaking to occur in April, and a completion date in early 2018. It will be located off Sand Sage Road, near the new Facebook location. Given the growth of Los Lunas, especially west on New Mexico 6, it is very important to have such service close at hand. Dave Shorr and Shelley Majsterek brought the Valencia County Senior Olympics to our attention, showing a poster, and letting us know that forms and materials will be available at Jubilee. We were told that Jubilee residents have, in the past, won many medals! Thanks to Mary and the Social Committee for providing breakfast, and coordinating the event so successfully.Jeri Friedman

Van Ann Moore Jubilee was once again treated to a one-woman show performed by Van Ann Moore. Ms. Moore has performed at Jubilee twice before, presenting “The Unsinkable Molly Brown” and “Love Through the Ages”. This time, on January 14, she portrayed Lillian Russell, who was an ‘American Beauty’ and represented the Golden Era of the American Musical Theater, charming theatergoers for over forty years. About 70 residents

attended this event. Before the show, dinner was served consisting of lasagna, eggplant parmigiana, salad, bread, and desserts. The villa was set up to allow a good view of the performance for everyone, thanks to Mary and the Social Team. Van Ann Moore is known internationally as a singer/actress who researches, writes, directs and stars in all her own shows. Her props, costumes, audio equipment are perfect, as is her singing voice. At this performance, she was accompanied on keyboard by our very own neighbor, Nelda Lobb, who did a fantastic job, to say the least. The audience truly enjoyed this show, and we are so glad to have had the opportunity to enjoy Van Ann Moore once again here at Jubilee.Jeri Friedman

Super Bowl LI PartyOur annual Super Bowl Sunday viewing party was held on Sunday, February 5, with over 50 fans attending what turned out to be one of the most exciting games in a long time. It looked like the Falcons would be on their way to their first Super Bowl ring, when in the 4th quarter the Patriots surged back to bring the game to a tie, resulting in the first Super Bowl game to go into overtime. The Patriots won in overtime with a score 34-28. It was nail-biting, stomach-churning, most exciting football ever played for the championship. Congrats to both teams! To add to the fun of the game was our “exclusive” taco bar, prepared by Brett and Amelia Crowther, the Jubilee Super Bowl Superstars! What a spread they organized. Our neighbors brought all the good munchies and sides that have come to be associated with this event. All efforts and contributions were much appreciated, including set-up and breakdown crews. TEAM WORK! Joe and Jacky Hilliard supervised the football pool and, as usual, it was sold out in about 24 hours. The lucky winners having the end of quarter scores were: Jim Schnitzler - end of 1st quarter - $100; Ed Cassidy - end of the 2nd quarter - $100; Steve Siera - end of 3rd quarter - $100, and John Davies final score (boy, did he have to wait a long time!) - $200. See you, next year, Sports Fans! Jacky Hilliard

Valentine’s Day PartyJubilee’s Valentine’s Party was well-attended, with close to 100 residents and guests on hand to enjoy the evening on Saturday, February 11. The Villa was set up with tables decorated with vases of roses, and very pretty doilies. There was space reserved in the great room to listen and dance to the music of our Roadside 66 band. Many people ventured out on the dance floor. It’s always so much fun to dance to the music we grew up with, and most times we wind up all dancing together in open format, which makes us all break out in smiles, adding to the enjoyment of the event. Dinner included chicken with wine, mashed potatoes, salad and bread, along with dainty desserts for all to enjoy. Mary, the Band of Bakers, and the Social Committee did a great job.Jeri Friedman

Observatory Grand Opening and Chili Cook Off

On the evening of February 25, Jubilee was treated to a clear night sky, enabling us to visit the onsite observatory, which was donated to our community by homeowners Tom and Nelda Lobb. The event started off with a ribbon cutting ceremony, formally dedicating this fantastic addition to the amenities for Jubilee residents. The people who toured the observatory were given a raffle ticket. The winner of the raffle was Jerrie Smith, the prize being a gift certificate to Teofilo’s. Following this observatory grand opening, our annual Chili Cook Off took place. People gathered to sample chili dishes that were made by various residents. Attending as judges were Mayor Charles Griego, Police Chief Nathan Gurele, Fire Chief John Gabaldon, Park Director Herman Garcia and our 2016 Chili Cook Off winner Juanita Lopez. The winners were: 1st place Donelle Goplen, 2nd place Steve Siera, and 3rd place Mae Sereduick. Congratulations to all! Villa tables were decorated with the colors green and red, in keeping with the theme of the night. People brought sides, salads and desserts, adding to the evening’s pleasure. Around 7 p.m., Tom opened the observatory for viewing the sky through the high-powered telescope that is set up inside. Tom pointed out the Orion nebula and the Pleiades star cluster which, when seen through the telescope, looks like a “teeny dipper”. He also focused the scope on Venus, the brightest light that can be seen with the naked eye in the night sky at this time. Looking through the telescope, however, showed a different aspect of this

planet. Venus was in crescent form, given that the revolution of our planet caused Venus to be between the sun and the Earth. What an amazing sight! Many thanks to Tom for his expertise in astronomy, and sharing it with us. There will be many opportunities for us to enjoy the night sky up close and personal right here at Jubilee. Be sure to watch for announcements of Astronomy nights throughout the year.Jeri Friedman

award winning Village of Los Lunas Matanza Team’s red chile pancakes after the race! The Village worked extremely hard to make this a first class experience for all runners. Overall, there were 159 participants, which included seven Jubilee residents. The 5K Jubilee participants were: Jean Davies, Joe Kezele, Nelda Lobb, Tom Lobb, and Jerrie Smith. Jeff Caldwell was a registered participant in the 10K event, and Jim Schnitzler was a half marathon Jubilee runner. Jubilee/Avalon was a major sponsor for this event. Thanks go to Jubilee residents who volunteered handing out water to the runners: Len Carita, Barb & Rick Stearns, with Doug and Linda Lenehan on standby.Jim Schnitzler

Highway 6 Trash Pick-UpOn February 4, we had thirty-four (34) Jubilee residents that picked up forty (40) bags of trash from Highway 6 plus the two (2) Jubileeretention ponds. We started at 8 a.m. and completed at 9:30. The Los Lunas Villagefurnished the safety vests, gloves and trash bags. Our plan is to have a pickup every quarter. This Jubilee project helps the community while offering an opportunity to meet fellow residents. It was a beautiful day.Jim Schnitzler

Pool Opening Party

King of the Hill Trail RunThe Village of Los Lunas held the 3rd Annual King of the Hill Trail Run on Saturday, March 11. The huge collaboration between manydepartments within the Village produced a race unlike any other in our region. The event consisted of the following: Half Marathon (13.1 mi.), 10K (6.2 mi.), and 5K (3.1 mi.). The race began at El Cerro de Los Lunas Trailhead, located .5 miles west of Jubilee on NM Highway 6. The 5K course followed the “Bowl Trail”, and is relatively flat with a few small hills. The surface is a mix of well-maintained crusher fine trails, compacted dirt trails, and a few sandy spots. The 10K course is extremely challenging. It shares the first mile with the 5K and then diverts up a steep hill to the “Overlook Trail”. After ascending this steep hill, runners are rewarded with breathtaking views of five different mountain ranges and the Rio Grande Valley. This trail is a mix of crusher fine, compacted dirt, and very sandy hills. The half marathon was an extremely challenging race. From the high point of the 10K course, the half climbs up and over El Cerro de Los Lunas, down the bluffs on the east face, before hitting a turn-around and doing it all over again! The half has nearly a 2100 ft. of elevation change. First through third place in each age/gender received

First Quarter 2017

Pool Opening PartyThe Jubilee swimming pool officially opened for the season on March 11, with a party marking the occasion. Close to 100 residents and guests attended the event, which featured a delightful dinner based on barbecued hot dogs and bratwursts. There were many, many toppings on hand to enable folks to choose a particular style to their liking. People brought sides and salads, adding to the robust menu. Desserts and ice cream rounded out the meal. The villa was festive, with centerpieces of pineapples, sunglasses, seashells, and other appropriate items depicting a poolside theme. Many thanks, as always to Mary, the Jubilee Social Committee, and everyone else who contributed to this fun evening. Our Jubilee band, Roadside 66, played great music, and many of us got out on the floor and danced the night away once again. The atmosphere was filled with such positive energy - another great night for visiting, dancing, and munching! Jeri Friedman

San Lorenzo Canyon Trail Day TripOn March 13, Karen Clary-Aragon and her cute boxer dog, Julez, led 34 Jubilee resi-dents down to the San Lorenzo Canyon Trail, northwest of Socorro, for a wonderful day of hiking and scenery enjoyment. There is a va-riety of trails to suit all levels of hiking. Some highlights of the area include beautiful arches and stunning rock formations. The existence of cottonwoods indicate that there may have been a reliable water source at one time. Following the canyon activity, folks went to lunch - some to The Owl Cafe in San Anto-nio and some to restaurants in Socorro. The weather was perfect, making for an absolutely terrific day all around, Many thanks to Karen for organizing such a fun day.Jeri Friedman

St. Patrick’s Day Happy Hour/Birthdays Party

Not only did Jubilee celebrate 21 birthdays on March 17, but the “wearing o’ the green” took center stage at the combined Birthday/St. Patty’s Day party at the Villa. Birthday organizer Daryl Tomczyk announced all those who had birthdays in March, and those folks were then serenaded by the Jubilation Quartet who, as always, delivered perfect harmonies. One hundred plus residents dined on a tasty menu of corned beef, cabbage and potatoes, along with a new dining delight of shepherd’s pie, compliments of the Band of Bakers. Residents supplied side dishes and appetizers, and the meal was capped off with 3 different cakes and a variety of ice cream. Folks then gathered in the patio area to hear our neighbors at the open mic event, enjoying a very pleasant evening weatherwise, as well. As always, the Social Committee worked very hard hosting this event and decorating the Villa for the occasion. We are fortunate to have such dedicated people volunteering their time for these busy events. Thank you to Mary Morton, the Band of Bakers, the Social Committee, and our residents for another great evening! Carol Salvagio
