LETTER FROM MSGR. ART

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Why do we have Lent? While this liturgical season is so hard-wired into our Catholic ethos, it might be helpful to understand the historic roots of this season. While one would naturally think that Christmas and its popularization in our culture was the historic first feast to be celebrated by Christians, such a notion would be far from the truth. The preeminent first feast of the Christian calendar was and is Easter. Scripture scholars tell us that the core narrative of the Gospel was that of the death and resurrection of the Lord. It was only later in Christian history that the stories that surround the birth and infancy of Jesus were incorporated into the canon of Christian Scripture. The first feast of the Christian Church, then, was the yearly commemoration of the Lord’s triumph over the powers of sin and death in His Glorious Resurrection. In Jerusalem, the historic place of these life-saving happenings, early on Christians would gather yearly at these sites to remember in ritual the Lord’s transition from death to life. Easter became the preeminent day in which individuals themselves would experience that ritual passage from death to life through the waters of baptism. Tertullian (155-240 AD), one of early Church Fathers coined the beautiful phrase that “Christian are made not born..” to signify that there was an ancient process of preparation for those who wished to become members of the household of the Christian faith. That process in the early Church involved years of preparation and scrutiny. It involved the entire community of believers creating a nurturing environment for the ‘catechumen’ to gradually mature in their calling to become a Christian in both name and fact. The proximate preparation of the catechumens, now called ‘the elect’ took place 40 days prior to the celebration of the Easter Mysteries. During these 40 days, they would receive critical formation in the ways of the faith. They would be solemnly entrusted with the ‘symbols’ of prayer and belief – the Lord’s Prayer and the Creed. They would be anointed with holy oil as a symbol of healing, strength and protection from the evil one. They would be admonished to fast – to mortify the body so that their deepest hunger would be for the Lord and Him alone. They would be encouraged to give of themselves to others, especially the poor, who in their weakness are images of the Lord Himself. In time, these 40 days of proximate preparation for new life in Baptism for the Elect, became what is now the Lenten journey for all Christians as together we renew and recapture the meaning of our own Baptismal regeneration in Christ. It is for this reason that we solemnly ‘renew’ our baptismal promises on Easter Sunday. Together with the newly baptized of our community, we once again say ‘yes’ to Christ and renew our commitment to Him as our Lenten journey comes to an end. Always forward! Msgr. Art

Night-Time Adorers Needed/First Mondays Only Join more than 100 fellow parishioners who have signed up for a Holy Hour with Our Lord during the parish’s First Monday Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, once a month. The night hours and early morning hours 10 PM –5 AM need more faithful Adorers. This is a beautiful time with Our Lord on the Altar, exposed, venerable. PREGUNTA DE REFLEXION DE LA SEMANA

MENSAJE DE LA SEMANA: Con el MIÉRCOLES de CENIZA, la Comunidad Cristiana ha iniciado de nuevo el CAMINO a la PASCUA. Por eso, la Cuaresma es tiempo de preparación a ese gran acontecimiento Pascual. Y, como los grandes acontecimientos hay que prepararlos con esmero, la liturgia nos ofrece una bella oportunidad. Éste es el punto de partida de un grupo de seguidores de Jesús. En ese camino, intentaremos VIVIR y EXPERIMENTAR, junto a Jesús, el proceso vivido por Él mismo: camino de disponibilidad ante el Padre (a pesar de las tentaciones); camino de entrega y generosidad en favor de la causa del Reino; camino de apertura y de solidaridad para con los hombres, sus hermanos. He aquí el CAMINO de la PASCUA. Se nos ofrecen unos MEDIOS concretos: - la oración: como apertura al Padre y disponibilidad ante sus planes; - la escucha de la Palabra: para hacernos “parecidos a Jesús”; - la reflexión: para profundizar nuestra fe y vivirla de un modo nuevo; - el ayuno: como forma de vivir la solidaridad. Queridos hermanos y hermanas, ¿Por qué la Cuaresma? Ya que esta temporada litúrgica es tan integrada a nuestra moral católica, podría ser útil entender las raíces históricas de esta temporada. Mientras que uno, naturalmente, podría pensar que la Navidad y su popularidad en nuestra cultura fue la primera fiesta histórica celebrada por los cristianos, tal noción está lejos de la verdad. La primera fiesta preeminente del calendario cristiano fue y es la Pascua. Los eruditos en las Santas Escrituras nos dicen que el núcleo narrativo del Evangelio es el de la muerte a la resurrección del Señor. No fue sino hasta más tarde en la historia del Cristianismo que las historias que rodean al nacimiento y de la infancia de Jesús fueron incorporadas en el canon de las Escrituras Cristianas. La primera fiesta de la Iglesia Cristiana, por lo tanto, era la conmemoración anual del triunfo del Señor sobre los poderes del pecado y de la muerte con su gloriosa resurrección. En Jerusalén, el lugar histórico de estos acontecimientos, desde un principio fue lugar de ritual para los cristianos que se reunía anualmente en estos sitios para recordar la transición del Señor de la muerte a la vida. La Pascua se convirtió en el día preeminente en el que los individuos vivían ese pasaje de la muerte a la vida a través de las aguas del bautismo. Tertuliano (155-240 AD), uno de los primeros Padres de la Iglesia acuñó la frase hermosa que dice "Los cristianos se hacen, no nacen...” para indicar que había un proceso antiguo de preparación para aquellos deseaban convertirse en miembros de la familia de la fe cristiana. Ese proceso en los primeros años de la Iglesia involucraba años de escrutinio y preparación. E involucra a toda la comunidad de creyentes a crear un entorno propicio para el camino del catecúmeno para así gradualmente madurar en su llamado al Cristianismo en nombre y acción. La siguiente preparación para los catecúmenos, que ahora son llamados "los elegidos" tomaba lugar 40 días antes de la celebración de los Misterio Pascual. Durante estos 40 días, recibían formación crítica en los caminos de la fe. Se les encomendaba los "símbolos" de oración y de creencia, El Padre Nuestro y el Credo. Se les ungían con los santos olios como un símbolo de curación, fuerza y protección del mal. Se le amonestaba a ayunar para mortificar al cuerpo, de modo que su hambre más profunda fuese saciada por el Señor y Él solamente. Se les animaba a entregarse a sí mismos al servicio de los demás, especialmente de los pobres, que en su debilidad son la imagen del mismo Señor. Con el tiempo, estos 40 días son preparación para la nueva vida en el bautismo para los Elegidos, se convirtió en lo que es ahora es el camino Cuaresmal para todo Cristianos, al juntos renovar y recuperar el sentido de nuestra propia regeneración Bautismal en Cristo. Esta es la razón por la cual solemnemente pedimos "renovar" las promesas de nuestro bautismo el Domingo de Pascua. Junto con los recién bautizados de nuestra comunidad, una vez más decimos "sí" a Cristo y renovamos nuestro compromiso con El al llegar al final de nuestro camino cuaresmal. Siempre adelante, Mons. El tema está tomado del Evangelio de San Lucas 6/36. Se escogió porque es el tema principal que nuestro Santo Padre, el Papa Francisco le dio a este Año de Jubileo. La cita del evangelio aparece en el símbolo especial para este año dedicado a la misericordia y compasión de Dios Padre, encarnado en Su Hijo Jesús. Vivimos como una Iglesia que es muy legalista, rígida y exigente, según el mismo Papa Francisco nos ha dicho en muchas de sus predicaciones. Él nos invita a considerar los siguientes tópicos para nuestra conversión cuaresmal.

♦ ¿Qué significa vivir con esperanza? ♦ ¿Por qué se nos hace tan difícil tener compasión con los demás? ♦ Si creemos que nuestro Dios es compasivo y misericordioso, ¿por qué rechazamos Su

invitación al perdón? ♦ Los Mandamientos de Dios y de la Iglesia son para guiar nuestras vidas a la santidad, ¿por qué los ignoramos o los interpretamos a conveniencia nuestra? ♦ Vivimos en un mundo de violencia, ¿qué debemos hacer para no dejarnos controlar por todo lo que nos rodea?

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE

Las cenizas que se nos pusieron en la frente el miércoles pasado ya están borradas, pero las palabras que nos dijeron deben sonar aún en nuestras almas. Tradicionalmente se dice: "Recuerda que del polvo venimos y al polvo retornaremos." Y aunque hoy en muchos lugares se dice: "Conviértete y cree en el Evangelio" el mensaje para oídos latinos es el mismo. Es un mensaje que nos saca de nuestro egoísmo recordándonos lo que los antiguos Toltecas ya sabían: esta vida es un sueño y el que muere despierta a la vida verdadera. Viviendo el Evangelio en esta vida nos prepara para la vida eterna. Las cenizas y esas frases dan un mensaje que lleva la imagen de la tierra que se somete para cultivarse. A veces la tierra se quema para que de sus cenizas venga vida nueva. Las cenizas que se nos pusieron no son para despreciar nuestra vida sino para amarla. De esa manera seremos cultivados por el ayuno, la oración y la caridad que hagamos durante la Cuaresma, sometiendo el polvo de nuestro cuerpo para dar fruto eterno. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. CONGRESO DE EDUCACION

RECongress es la reunión anual más grande de su tipo en el mundo. El evento de cuatro días se lleva a cabo en el Centro de Convenciones de Anaheim (California) y es patrocinado por la Oficina de Educación Religiosa de Los Angeles. Inicio en 1968 como "Instituto" para profesores

de educación religiosa (CCD), RECongress ha crecido hasta incluir a personas de todas las vocaciones y reli-giones diferentes. El día anual de la Juventud, reúne a mas de 10,000 jóvenes del Sur de California y otras partes del mundo. Durante los tres días, el Congreso 2016 ofrecerá 202 conferencistas que presentarán 309 conferencias – abarcando temas que involucran el crecimiento personal, la música y temas espirituales – en inglés, español y vietnamita.Esta vez, el Congreso se llevará a cabo el día 25 de Febrero (Día de la Juventud) al 28 de Febrero del 2016. ¡No se lo pierda!
