To be a Jew…To be a Jew means…

…to identify with the people whose story is told in the Jewish scriptures. (Our Old Testament)

… to be united with other Jews in a special relationship with God known as a “covenant” and to value being faithful in keeping that covenant.

…that one is confident in God’s faithfulness to the promises made to one’s ancestors as recorded in the “Torah”.

…to have a unique calling and responsibility…being the “Chosen Ones” to reveal God’s word to the world.

The Torah (The Law)

First 5 books of the Bible (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy

-The Torah is the most sacred book in the Jewish religion. According to traditional belief, it was revealed word-for-word and letter-for-letter by God to Moses as the Israelites stood before Mount Sinai following their liberation from Egypt.

-The Torah includes a narrative element, extending from the creation of the world until Moses' death, just prior to the people's entry into the Promised Land. It also contains a series of laws and commandments (according to some, there are a total of 613 commandments). Jews regard the study and observance of these precepts as their central role in maintaining a covenant with God.

-The name "Torah" is a Hebrew word meaning "guidance" or "instruction," though sometimes (especially in Christian usage) rendered "law."

-The Torah is divided up into 5 books, and is therefore referred to as the "Five Books of Moses," the English equivalent of the ancient Greek expression "Pentateuch" which is still used occasionally.

-Because of its centrality to Jewish life and thought, the Torah has always been the main focus of Jewish scholarly and religious energy, and it has inspired countless commentaries

The Talmud consists of the Mishnah and Gemara

The Mishnah

This consists of early rabbinic legal code divided into six orders of laws: agriculture, Sabbath and festivals, marriage, divorce, and vows, civil and criminal violations, ritual sacrifice, and ceremonial purity. The first surviving printed edition dates from 1492.

Gemara

Consolidation and interpretation of laws continued in Babylon and a commentary on the Mishnah.

Note: Other texts that are considered important consist of other books of the Old Testament, a week day prayer book, commentaries on the Law, and mystical writings and saying of inspired teachers (rabbis)

Reform Conservative Orthodox

Messiah will come to all people.

Helped Jews ease into the mainstream culture by being an active part of communities.

They do not isolate themselves from the larger/outside Jewish community.

Sabbath services are in English or the language of the community.

They are willing to adapt Jewish laws to the needs of historical change.

Female rabbis are welcomed. Men and women worship

together side by side in the synagogue.

They believe Judaism must be restored as a living and breathing tradition.

Followers are encouraged to be involved within their outside communities but not to be overcome by them.

Sabbath services can either be in Hebrew or English.

They are willing to adapt laws to contemporary life but traditions must not be compromised.

Followers are encouraged to read the Torah and Talmud and live them as they pertain to their lives.

Some communities have female rabbis but some do not approve of them. (The reconstructionist branch which is an offshoot of conservative would approve of female rabbis)

Men and women worship from separate sides of the synagogue.

Directly opposes Reform branch. It is anchored in tradition. They believe Jews will lose their

spiritual heritage if they adapt to modernity.

The Torah is their anchor and it is followed to the letter of the law.

They keep strict kosher kitchens in place. (i.e. separate dishes/fridges for dairy and meat products)

On the Sabbath, they are required to do nothing but worship God; it’s a day of complete dedication to God.

The word of the Rabbi is law and there are no female rabbis permitted.

Men and women worship on separate sides of the synagogue. In some synagogues, they even have a curtain separating them.

Why were Jews his main target?

Some possible theories:

1) He was threatened by them. (Their education, success…)

2) He blamed them for WWI, the depression, and even comunism.

3) He didn’t feel they were of “their kind” and he felt that even historically, they were always a problem.

How did Hitler succeed?

1) Propaganda- The spreading of ideas, information, allegations, or rumours to injure an institution, cause or person. The Nazis ran a MASSIVE propaganda campaign against the Jews.

2) Indoctrination- the passing on of only one version of reality, without the freedom to compare and explore other options.

3) Blind Obedience- thoughtless submission to a particular authority figure or system, often resulting in unreasonable acts that are performed by human beings without question or hesitation.

4) Hitler “dehumanized” the Jews…when you dehumanize “people”, it makes it easier to kill them!

Institutional Discrimination: A scary….VERY SCARY…reality!!

If we can’t trust the people in power, who can we trust?Institutional Discrimination: When those who are in power (i,e. our governments) institute laws that we blindly follow or that we’re subject to. This also operates in a

way that feelings against a certain group can become shared by a society. We feel like this group doesn’t have rights, we justify the behaviour against them and even if we don’t know them or “come to know them:, we feel the right to discriminate against them because society has taught us that it’s okay to.

PEOPLE ARGUE THAT IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN!

ARE WE SURE ABOUT THIS? We have and will continue to blindly be a part of institutional discrimination

unless we speak up!!
