Surgical Towels are utilized in the O.R. for a variety of different functions. These include:

Surgical Gowns

Gowns are sterile from:

•Nipple line to the level of the sterile field

•2 inches above the elbow to the cuff on the sleeves

Sterile Gowns establish a barrier that minimizes the passage of organisms between nonsterile and sterile areas

Surgical Wrappers Surgical wrappers used:

to protect the contents of surgical packs

from becoming contaminated, and allow for aseptic presentation of pack contents

Certain larger sizes may also serve as back

table covers (when not anticipated to be in

contact with liquids). Can sometimes be used as an ancillary drape to

cover areas away from the surgical site

SURGICAL COVERSMayo Cover/Table Cover

Surgical Drapes Fenestrated Non-Fenestrated

Q: What is a fenestration?A: A fenestration is a fixed opening

incorporated into the design of the surgical drape to facilitate access to the operative site

Fixed Fenestration Surgical Drapes

Winged Flap & Snap Laparotomy

Ortho Split

Small Universal

Cystoscopy

U- DrapeWinged F&S Lap/Lith

Universal Draping Systems Promoted as an advantageous

alternative to a fixed fenestration program of surgical drapes

Reduction in inventory SKUs Universal component parts are utilized

for high percentage of cases, eliminating the need for a broad array of procedure-specific drapes

Reduction in acquisition costs Universal components are less costly

than fixed fenestrated products Simplified pack-making

U-IV System

U-II System

AORN Association of periOperative Registered

Nurses Non-governmental body

Publishes and maintains a series of “Recommended Practices” addressing appropriate selection criteria and “best practice” use of surgical apparel, drapes, and packaging systems

“Barrier” Fabrics

Three causal factors: Time Pressure Fluid (Liquid)

Utilized to prevent occurrence of strikethrough “Penetration of microorganisms, particulates,

or fluid through a fabric” – AORN

Important Note

When employing reusable surgical draping products, it is imperative that only NON-PENETRATING towel clamps be utilized.

SURGICAL WASTE

Universal Precautions:A method of infection control that

requires that all blood and body fluids be considered infectious and that the same safety precautions be taken whether or not the patient is know to have a bloodborne infectious disease

Thank You
