Your Spanish Notebook- 1st SEMESTER

pre-AP/IB 2

The only thing that you are required to bring to class every day will be your Spanish notebook. You do not need to bring your textbook because I have a class set. Your notebook will be a tool that will include all of your notes, vocabulary, workbook pages, and paper. If you forget to bring your notebook to class, you will receive ZERO(S) on any assignment due that day so please bring it every day. If you lose your notebook you will be required to purchase a new one, make copies of the necessary notes that were provided, and purchase 2 new workbooks (PW and GPA) from our textbook lady- Ms. Benyo.

The following handouts will be the first thing in your notebook: 1. Homework Sheet 2. HW coupons 3. Participation Sheet 4. Hall passes 5. ‘Bienvenidos al español’ Class Syllabus (You will need to print this document from my TW page.) 6. Correction log (aka pink sheet) 7. Essay codes

Next place all of the dividers in your notebook and label each tab accordingly. For example, the first tab should read: PE1, and so on. (PE1, PE2, 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B and WA/AA/VA). Each chapter will include the following handouts for its respective chapter, but read the steps below in order to understand the process.

1. Actividades del libro (Multi-color sheets for warm-ups that you received the first day.) 2. Practice Workbook pages (PW) 3. Guided Practice Activities workbook pages (GPA) 4. Apuntes (Any notes I have given you; usually white sheets.)

STEPS YOU NEED TO TAKE TO SET-UP YOUR NOTEBOOK.

1. Place all of the ‘Actividades del libro’ (multi-colored sheets) behind each divider. HINT: The first one is pink and reads Para Empezar.

2. Next look through the stack that reads Practice Workbook pages (PW), flip through the first 48 pages and stop at the page that reads: “Writing, Audio, & Video activities”. You should now have pages #1-48. These will all be kept together behind divider 7. DO NOT SORT THESE BY CHAPTER, PLEASE.

3. Now you may start sorting the Practice Workbook pages (PW) by chapter (refer to the chart below) and then repeat the same process for the Guided Practice Activities pages (GPA). NOTE: Some of the page numbers have an (*) because one chapter ends and the other starts on the same page. Put that page in the chapter that we will cover first. After we finish that chapter you can transfer the page to the next divider for the next chapter.

CHAPTER PW & GPA PAGE NUMBERS

Divider 1 Capítulo PE 1 (Para Empezar 1) PW 1-2 GPA viii-5

Divider 2 Capítulo PE 2 (Para Empezar 2) PW 3-4* GPA 6-9

Divider 3 Capítulo 1A PW 5-15* GPA 13-28

Divider 4 Capítulo 1B PW *16-26 GPA 29-44

Divider 5 Capítulo 2A PW 27-37* GPA 45-60

Divider 6 Capítulo 2B PW *38-48 GPA 61-76

Divider 7 Writing, Audio, & Video activities SEE BULLET #2

Divider 8 Extra notebook paper (about 15 loose-leaf sheets)

4. Always come to class with a blue or black pen, a pencil and highlighters (at least 6 different colors). Keep these in your binder if you need to so that you don’t forget them. I WILL NOT have any extras available.

I STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU PICK UP A 3-HOLE PUNCHED ZIPPER POUCH TO KEEP EVERYTHING IN ONE PLACE. THIS IS YOUR FIRST DAILY GRADE.

1. When you walk through the door, the first thing you should do is write the date and homework assignment that is posted on the board under the ‘Tonight’s Homework’ label. You will lose 1 point for each blank that is not filled so write it down. Please follow directions!

2. You will receive a stamp for every homework assignment that you complete 100% and with reasonable accuracy. I will then collect this sheet after every 5 assignments and record the grade that you have earned. (Each assignment will be worth 20 points.)

SUB INFO

Color Coding & finding materials: All classes are color coded by subject. The crate on the cart at the front of the

room color coded and labeled per day. All materials are in this crate. Masters/keys are with lesson plans in this folder per day.

Attendance: Please check attendance in the first 10 minutes of class. There are two attendance sheets together. Please put attendance on both, and send one to the Attendance Office (textbook room) with a student (pass is already provided, just write in student’s name). Please leave the second attendance form for me for my records. There is also a seating chart with the attendance. Look for the Front Board where the class period is, to read the chart. Behavior Forms: Please fill out for excellent behavior or misbehavior. If the class is out of hand as a whole, have them put everything away and put on the overhead one (or two if needed) POP QUIZ transparencies. Restroom Policies: Students have a restroom passes in their notebooks (two passes per six weeks). They should just fill out the name, date & time and you sign it. They do not take the pass out of their notebook, but rather take a medal that is hanging by the door as their hall pass. Homework: their homework is a completion grade. Each student has a stamp sheet in the color of the class. At the beginning of the period while they are doing their warm-up, walk around the room and stamp their sheet if they have the homework. The policy is ALL or NOTHING, there is no ½ credit. They can still receive a stamp if its only 1 or 2 questions not complete. Please write an “X” in the square if they do not have the homework. This keeps them from later saying, but I did it & the sub didn’t stamp mine. Speaking points: If you speak the language & you are here on a day for level 1 or 2 you may mark speaking points. For German 1, the students must speak a complete sentence in German. The sentences may be questions to go to the restroom or answering questions for the warm-up or any assignment. When they give you a sentence (complete & grammatically correct) give them a tick mark on the seating chart. For German 2, if you switch the sign on the board to “Man spricht hier Deutsch,” they may not speak English & each time they say a sentence in English give them a tick mark which is a negative compared to level 1. Music: If the students are working on a project or some activity, you may put on music. The students are NOT allowed to listen to IPODS, etc. There are CDs by the CD player. You may put music on while they are working. As a reminder, you can always put up the pop quizzes if they get out of hand if the music is too much to handle. Suggestions– Silbermond, Nena, Wir sind Helden, Xavier Naidoo, BAP, or Annette Louisan. Help: If you need any help my Department Chair is Jeanine Edson across the hall in room E1313 or Mily-Bett Llanos-Gremillion in room E1311.

Tips for the ‘Traveling’ Teacher

1. Use color-coding to your advantage as a traveling teacher. Color-code your keys, file folders, binders, containers, etc. 2. Meet the teachers with whom you will be sharing the room and try to get your own space (a desk, space on the board for daily agenda, wall to showcase student work, etc.). Make sure you post your schedule and contact information in each room so that people know where to find you at certain times of the day. Always hold detention, tutoring, etc. in the same room so that you can avoid excuses from students and parents. 3. Become the Dollar Tree “Queen” or “King” and buy pencil pouches to carry a class set of pens in one, pencils in another, etc. Also invest in bins with secure lids for markers, scissors, first aid kit, etc. Sure, you could always borrow from the ‘Resident’ teacher, but let’s be realistic, not all teachers are as open to sharing materials. 4. Use an accordion file with enough dividers and labeled for each class period so that you may immediately file students’ work. Don’t forget the ‘Late Work’ divider. You may want to use the same accordion file holder to store referrals, nurse passes, etc. 5. Enlist the help of people around you. Ask a neighbor teacher to keep an eye on your class, just in case you are running late—inevitably you will have those days. For rowdy classes, have them wait outside for you so that you know a teacher will be in the hall witnessing their conduct. 6. Assign class helpers, yes, even middle/high school students enjoy being your personal assistant. Ask a couple of responsible and prompt students to write the agenda on the board for you. That way, when you arrive you can have students begin with their warm-up immediately. ALWAYS have your warm- ups ready to go (perhaps keep them in a binder and labeled).

7. Make sure you go to each classroom and prepare all of your items for the next day (or later on that same day) so that you can avoid carrying too much and leaving things behind. 8. Don’t forget to have a super-organized sub folder. Include a map, and it might not be a bad idea to use the scripted lesson plans in this situation. 9. Last, but not least, train your students to help you keep everything tidy and organized. Set high standards and you will see them rise to the occasion.
