Innovation
Innovation generally refers to renewing, changing or creating more effective processes, products or ways of doing things
Innovation in business application of new ideas to solve the problem
Being innovative does not mean inventing; it can mean changing your business model and adapting to changes in your environment to deliver better products or services
Sustainable development
To meet the needs of the present without the compromising the ability to meet the need of the future
Sustainability in Business is defined as managing the triple bottom line-a process by which companies manage theirfinancial, social, environmentalrisks, obligations&opportunities. (referred to as PPP)
Innovation meets sustainable development
Business and Sustainability is a concept that says businesses can function and earn a profit while at the same time minimizing or eliminating any negative impact on the environment from its operations
The need for adopting best practices led to innovation
So, for industrial development to be sustainable, it must address important issues at the macro level, such as economic efficiency (innovation, prosperity, productivity), social equity (poverty, community, health and wellness, human rights) and environmental accountability (climate change, land use, biodiversity)
“Jugaad”
Think frugal, be flexible and generate breakthrough growth
A creative or innovative idea providing a quick, alternative way of solving or fixing a problem
Innovation is the mother of sustainability, innovation leads to sustainability and need of sustainable development leads to innovation, they are inter-dependant on each other
Innovations in India
Vortex Engineering's Gramateller ATM/ Green ATM for rural India
Low carbon rice, A new technique for growing rice pioneered by two PepsiCo employees in Punjab
-reduces carbon emissions by 70% -cuts labor costs -saves 30% water requirements per acre
Clean, green lighting
In rural Karnataka, Harish Hande has brought solar power to over 150,000 poor households by devising a viable pay-as-you-go model
-Customers either buy or rent solar lights with the help of a loan
-It is providing clean, bright electric light well below the cost of kerosene (the normal lighting fuel for millions of Indians) to people earning barely $50-100 a month
Low cost doesn't mean low technology
The Tata Swach water filter is 50 per cent cheaper than its nearest competitor, and can clean 3,000 liters without electricity or running water.
Recently India Successfully launched Spacecraft to Mars “Mangalayan”.
-It the cheapest mission of $72 million project, which was accomplished in record time
A mix of low and high technology
In the high valleys of Ladakh, farmers can grow fresh vegetables through the freezing winters by an innovative Green house
-Carbon emissions cut by around 460 tonnes a year
-leading to better nutrition and health benefits for over 50,000 people
-Increase in employment opportunities and their incomes have increased by around 30%
Mansukhbhai from Gujarat and his concept of the Mitticool clay refrigerator
Some of his other products that he came up after
years of experimentation are, a 0.9-micron water filter, a pressure cooker, non stick pans that can be used over an LPG gas stove and many more. Now his dream is to design a ‘Mitticool House’ that would stay naturally cool all by itself, there would be no need for Air Conditioners anymore
Devi Shetty's Narayana Hrudayalaya to conduct heart surgeries at world's cheapest rates
Aravind Eye hospital, while richer clients pay for the privilege of private rooms, the same quality healthcare is provided to poorer clients on a ‘no frills’ basis
Jaipur Foot low-cost foot prosthesis, that costs 200times less than the latest prosthetic options available
Tata’s Electric Nano car & Bharati airtel
The Tata Nano, the world's cheapest family car is the best known frugal innovation
The design met international standards in safety& emissions, while taking a radical approach to cutting costs
Bharti Airtel’s approach to cutting the cost of mobile phone calls
Global level
Cloud computing Kenya’s M–PESA mobile phone payment and
money transfer system An app is the western equivalent of Jugaad Grameen Bank, where Muhammad Yunus got
the idea of giving small loans to the poor without collateral
Over 4 million cars in Brazil are now running on gasohol instead of petrol. Gasohol is a fuel made from sugar cane
"It is fundamentally about doing more with less, for more and more people” and thinking about future generations, is clearly core to Sustainable innovation.
Usage of limited resources and with less negative impact on environment sustainability driving the innovation and innovation driving the sustainable development leads to upliftment of people planet and prosperity
Innovation having met the Principles of sustainability
Reduce dependence upon fossil fuels, underground metals, and minerals
Reduce dependence upon synthetic chemical and other unnatural substances
Reduce encroachment upon nature Meet human needs fairly &
efficiently
Human element
The Aravind Eye Hospital, where some doctors felt strongly about needless blindness. Or the Grameen Bank, where Muhammad Yunus got the idea of giving small loans to the poor without collateral or paperwork because he felt strongly about rural folks
But we fail to innovate substantially in India because we have only engineering capacity and not such intense thoughts or feelings and basically to avert the risk
Conclusion
Having discussed the culture of Jugaad in India and global wide and its contribution to sustainability, the inter-dependant nature of innovation and sustainability leading to Sustainable development
The need of human element for innovation to attain the goals of sustainable development
